The
Tent of Meeting was the place in the wilderness where Moses would meet with God
before the Tabernacle was constructed. During their wanderings in the desert,
the tent would be set up outside of the Israelite camp. The purpose of the
Tabernacle in the desert, and, once the Israelites reached the land of Israel,
in the Temple in Jerusalem, was to serve as a fixed resting place for God’s
presence on Earth. While the Divine Presence rested briefly on Mount Sinai and
in the Tent of Meeting, it found a long-term home in the Tabernacle, whose
permanent residence was the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Today, the Temple Mount,
which still stands in Jerusalem, is highly restricted to Jewish visitors, and
non-Muslims are not permitted to pray there. Organizations like the Temple Mount
Heritage Foundation are working every day to increase access and awareness so
that every person who wants to visit this holy site is able to do so.
