In an attempt to seemingly whitewash the issue of abortion, Politico has labeled the act of aborting one of three babies in a set of triplets a “reduction.”
Last week, Politico published a report on various statistics the federal government keeps track of — one of these being what it called “America’s vanishing triplet count.”
A graph depicting triplet birth rate was shown, but Politico failed to detail the real reason for what it called “the decline of triplets.”

“Triplets and higher order births—quadruplets, quintuplets, and so on—are becoming rarer and rarer these days, hitting their lowest rate since 1992. One big reason for the decline: In 1998, guidelines on fertility treatment began discouraging doctors from implanting more than 3 embryos during in vitro fertilization,” Politico said.
“Another reason is more sensitive,” the reports added. “More women who use IVF are choosing to reduce triplets down to twins.”
Politico, though, did not even attempt to explain what the term “reduce” means.

A selective reduction occurs when a mother does not want to bear the extra burden of having three children. She informs the doctor she would like to “reduce” down to twins, or singletons, according to the Washington Examiner.
The doctor then uses an ultrasound to maneuver the unborn child into an ideal position to inject a syringe of potassium chloride into its heart.
Philip Wegmann, writing for the Examiner, criticized Politico’s piece, saying it “casually whitewashed slaughter.”
“Journalists normally flinch at the details. They don’t write about how the doctor uses ultra-sound to maneuver the unborn baby into position. They don’t describe how a syringe of toxic potassium chloride is inserted in the mother’s belly. And they don’t report how that long needle is stabbed into the child’s little heart until it stops beating. Politico just calls it a ‘reduction,'” he said.

Wegmann also pointed out that Politico is not alone in its “use of sterilized, obscuring language” to discuss the decline in the number of triplets.
“The New York Times published a long expose on the emerging phenomenon in 2011, explaining how expecting mothers sheared triplets into twins and cut twins into ‘singletons.’ The story chronicles their reasons for tailoring a family. Many women wanted a smaller pregnancy because more kids mean more emotional, financial, and scheduling problems,” he wrote.
“What’s not described is the procedure for disposing of one or more siblings,” Wegmann added.
