An ordained Presbyterian minister who wanted to conduct a prayer vigil on the United States Capitol Grounds on September 11, the twentieth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, is suing the United States Capitol Police board after being denied permission to hold the vigil.

On July 9, Reverend Patrick Mahoney applied for a permit to hold his proposed prayer vigil on the Western Front Lawn on September 11. On August 19, 2021, he was informed that his permit application “could not be processed” because the Western Front Lawn was “closed,” the lawsuit states.

The Center for American Liberty, which represents Mahoney, stated, “What is abundantly clear is that the Capitol Grounds are not restricted to everyone. Representative Cori Bush and dozens of others protested for days—camping on the steps of the Capitol—demanding the renewal of an eviction moratorium. And that is not all. At least one other permit application was approved and that group held a large protest with a stage, sound equipment, and a significant media presence.”

Mahoney said, “In response to this outrageous violation of the First Amendment and free speech, we have filed a federal lawsuit which will be heard this week. Please join me in prayer: Father, we cry out to you as we realize our freedom and our rights do not come from government, but they come from You. We pray that we will prevail in this lawsuit and that every American, regardless of their beliefs or values, would have the right to freely express them  in the public square without government interference or intimidation. Return the People’s House back to the people.”

The lawsuit explains:

The Government has devised and operates a permitting scheme under which persons seeking to conduct demonstration activity on the Capitol Grounds in groups of twenty (20) individuals or more must obtain a permit to do so. While the Government has permitted other events on the Capitol Grounds over the past several weeks—including at least one event on the Western Front Lawn—it failed to grant Rev. Mahoney’s permit application to hold his proposed prayer vigil without meaningful explanation, other than to say that area was “closed.”

This proffered justification is untrue. Although the Western Front Lawn was “closed” after the events of January 6, 2021, the fence enclosing the Western Front Lawn was removed in July 2021. By allowing multiple other demonstrations to proceed while not affording Rev. Mahoney the same opportunity, the Government is discriminating against Rev. Mahoney based on the content of his speech in violation of the First Amendment.

Further, the Government’s permitting regime acts as a prior restraint on speech and is impermissible because the Government has not demonstrated that it applied narrow, objective, and definite criteria to guide its decision not to issue Rev. Mahoney a permit. Indeed, to this day, the Government has not explained how it came to the decision to fail to grant Rev. Mahoney’s permit application.

Moreover, even taking the Government at its word that the Western Front Lawn is “closed,” if the Government has, in fact, “closed” the Western Front Lawn, it has impermissibly created a no-speech zone around the perimeter of the Capitol, an outcome that is not narrowly tailored to any significant governmental interest. For these reasons too, the Government has violated Rev. Mahoney’s rights to free speech, assembly, and association under the First Amendment.

The Government’s restrictions have specifically and explicitly targeted Rev. Mahoney’s religious and “faith-based” service and are thus not neutral. The Government has prohibited Rev. Mahoney’s religious gathering while allowing non-religious public gatherings.

Watch and learn about the most sincere prayer that pierces the heavens and comes from the depth of our souls.

When we pray, we speak with God.

We pray for so many things, for ourselves and for others. We thank God for all our blessings and pray for forgiveness.

But sometimes, we have no idea how to pray or what to pray for. There are just no words!

Yet there is one form of prayer that evokes our deepest emotions. Words are not necessary.

Shana Tova!

10 Reasons to Listen to the Shofar on Rosh Hashana...The great 10th century sage, Saadia Gaon, compiled a list of 10 interpretations as to what the Shofar represents and why we blow it on Rosh Hashana.

The great 10th century sage, Saadia Gaon, compiled a list of 10 interpretations as to what the Shofar represents and why we blow it on Rosh Hashana.

The highlight of the Rosh Hashana service is the Shofar blowing. The Shofar, as most readers are aware, is a ram’s horn. The Shofar makes a number of appearances throughout Scripture.

For example, the Shofar was blown at the Revelation at Sinai when God gave the Ten Commandments. It was also used in biblical times to announce the arrival of holidays and to declare war, among other ritual uses. Indeed, Joshua used a Shofar as both a declaration of war and as a weapon in the assault on Jericho.

It was even used as a musical instrument and is still used as such today.

Do you know why we blow the shofar on Rosh Hashana? Neither do I. It’s simply because the Torah tells us to! As with most mitzvot (commandments) of the Torah, there is no given reason nor promise of reward for fulfilling the mitzvot, that of Shofar included. We do it because that’s what God asks of us.

Nevertheless, the great 10th-century sage, Saadia Gaon, compiled a list of 10 interpretations as to what the Shofar represents and why we blow it on Rosh Hashana, which I would like to share with you.

1. The Shofar recalls the trumpets that were used (and still used today) to coronate a king. Since Rosh Hashana is essentially a celebration of God’s Kingship over the world, it is appropriate that we “coronate” Him as our king, using our “trumpets” just like earthly kings are coronated.

2. The haunting sound of the Shofar arouses us to examine our deeds and renew our relationship with God. As Rosh Hashana begins the 10-day period of repentance leading up to Yom Kippur, it is appropriate that we blow the Shofar for this reason alone.

3. To remember that the Shofar was blown when the Torah was given at Mount Sinai and to use the opportunity to recommit ourselves to Torah study and observance.

4. The Shofar reminds us of the words of the prophets and encourages us to follow their teachings.

5. There are three different sounds that are blown with the Shofar. Each one resembles a different type of cry. In this context, the crying sounds represent our desire for God to redeem us and usher in the Messianic era.

6. The Shofar, being a ram’s horn, reminds us of the binding of Isaac. Instead of sacrificing his son Isaac, Abraham sacrificed a ram instead. Indeed, the story of the binding of Isaac (known as the Akeida) is read from the Torah on Rosh Hashana.

7. The powerful sound of the Shofar reminds us of the power of God who is everywhere at all times.

8. To recall that on the Day of Judgment, a Shofar will be blown to announce its arrival.

9. To recall that in the Jerusalem of the future, the Shofar will be blown to announce freedom and peace for all its inhabitants.

10. Finally, to recall that the Shofar will be blown in Messianic times to announce the redemption of the entire world. At that time, the entire world will come to accept God upon themselves and all forms of idolatry will be eradicated.

So there you have it! Be sure to have some or all of these teachings and interpretations in mind when attending services on Rosh Hashana. May the entire Rosh Hashana experience be a meaningful one for you. And on behalf of United with Israel, we wish you a happy and healthy New Year.

Jewish and Israeli Population Figures Released...Approximately 45 percent of the world’s Jews live in Israel; By Pesach Benson, United With Israel According to Jewish Agency data revealed to Israel’s Walla News ahead of Rosh HaShanah, there are 15.2 million Jews in the world.

Approximately 45 percent of the world’s Jews live in Israel; By Pesach Benson, United With Israel

According to Jewish Agency data revealed to Israel’s Walla News ahead of Rosh HaShanah, there are 15.2 million Jews in the world.

The stats were gathered for the Jewish Agency by Professor Sergio Della Pergola of Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

The figures only included people who identified themselves as Jewish and not any other religious identity, Walla reported.

According to Walla, if the numbers identified people based on whether they qualified for Israel’s Law of Return, the world’s Jewish population would be 25.3 million. The Law of Return, which was last amended in 1970, allows a person to immigrate as long as he or she has one Jewish grandparent.

Roughly 6.93 million — or 45 percent — of the world’s Jewish population, now lives in Israel.

The largest diaspora population, not surprisingly, is the United States with around six million Jews.

The next largest Jewish communities are in France with 446,000, followed by Canada (393,000) and the United Kingdom (292,000).

Meanwhile, Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics also released its latest numbers on the Israeli population.

Israel’s population currently stands at 9.3 million. Since last Rosh HaShanah, the population has grown by around 146,000, or 1.6%.

The demographic breakdown came to Jews comprising 74 percent of the population, followed by Arabs (21%), with the remainder being non-Arab Christians, people of other religions or not identifying any religion.

The CBS also forecast Israel’s population to reach 10 million by the end of 2024, and 20 million by 2065.

The figures included citizens, permanent residents and residents of Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria. Palestinians living under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority were not counted.

Jewish demographics continuing to shift towards Israel will have ramifications down the road in terms of Jewish identity, Diaspora support for Israel, Israeli society and how organized Jewry allocates resources. The observance of certain religious laws may also change to account for the majority of Jews living in the Holy Land.

While these issues may make for heated conversations, the Jewish people are still a small number relative to the rest of the world. According to World Bank estimates, the world’s population is 7.6 billion. Based on those figures, Jews make up 0.002 percent of the world’s population.
