#13 The Exchanged Life Podcast | Setting StandardsWelcome to the Exchanged Life Podcast. Today, Jonnie T. and Dr. Stephen Phinney reveal the dangers of setting standards on self, others, and God.
TELLING OTHERS HOW TO LIVEWhy do we “feel” we have the prerogative to tell others how to act and live?It is a flaw deeply embedded in human nature—the desire to dictate how others should live, how we ourselves should operate, and even how God should act according to our understanding. Today’s PodcastWe craft expectations, believing that we know best, that our wisdom is sufficient, and that our perspective is absolute. We impose standards upon others, judging their choices, insisting on their conformity to what we deem correct. We set rigid expectations for ourselves, convinced that self-mastery alone will bring fulfillment. And perhaps most dangerously, we try to fit God into our framework, expecting Him to move according to our plans rather than submitting ourselves fully to His sovereignty. But reality always humbles us. We do not hold the keys to truth, wisdom, or divine authority. Our control is an illusion; our understanding is limited. God is sovereign, and it is not for us to demand or dictate His ways—but to trust, obey, and follow where He leads. The way forward is not through commanding others, redefining ourselves, or questioning God’s wisdom—it is through surrender, humility, and indwelling faith. Only when we release our grip on control do we truly find freedom—freedom to live as we were created to, in alignment with His perfect will. One of humanity’s greatest struggles is the desire to control—not only our own lives but the lives of others, and even the ways of God Himself.Listen to our podcast and discover the details of our topic today.
