What does a family do when they could lose everything? In 1944 Hungary, 12-year-old Erika Gold and her parents knew their lives were in danger. Their survival depended on many risky choices—from burying their most valuable belongings to defying orders from a soldier—while trying to hold on to what they treasured most.

Today, Erika’s story is one of six brought to life in Artifacts Unpacked: The Animated Series. Each short video explores the choices ordinary people faced during the Holocaust and the deadly consequences of hatred and antisemitism. Find out what happened to Erika and the keepsake she saved.
