5 Signs the End of the World is Closer Than You Think Are you prepared for the end?

When will the world end? Every war, famine and earthquake seems to trigger another thought among Christians that the end is near. We are justified in thinking these things because of Jesus’ prophetic words, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains” (Matthew 24:7-8).

But how close is the end of the world, really? Closer than you might think. First, it’s important to understand that we have been living in the last days for centuries now. When Peter addresses the crowd on the day the Holy Spirit birthed the church, he used as explanation a prophecy from the Old Testament and stated that we are now in the last days, “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people” (Acts 2:17). So if we’ve technically been in the last days for the past 2000 years of human history, why has God tarried so long? Look to the Old Testament story of Israel for explanation. God warned the Israelites for hundreds of years about the coming judgment on them as a nation, but He allowed them ample time to repent and change their ways. Ultimately, judgment came at the hands of foreign nations. So when God is warning judgment not just on a nation but on an entire planet and species, it makes sense that God would allow humanity ample time to repent and change our ways, even if that is thousands of years.

But just because God has delayed this long, we should not delude ourselves into thinking the end of the world is far off in the distant future. When the disciples asked Jesus about the end of the age in Matthew 24, here are five signs Jesus gave them that are being fulfilled today.

The rising persecution of Christians.

When talking with His disciples about the end times, Jesus forewarned that before the end of the world, “You will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death” (Matthew 24:9). 2016 saw yet another increase in the persecution of Christians, with Fox News reporting that “nearly 90,000 Christians were killed for their faith in 2016 and that as many as 600 million were prevented from practicing their faith through intimidation, forced conversions, bodily harm or even death.”

Just because the physical persecution of Christians is not happening in America does not mean that it is not a problem worldwide. The imprisonment, torture and even death of Christians continue to rise throughout the world at record levels. Jesus forewarned that this would happen. The rising persecution of Christians points to the truth that the end of the world is closer than we think.

Christians will be hated by all nations.

Immediately after Jesus tells His disciples about coming persecution in the last days, He states, “You will be hated by all nations because of me” (Matthew 24:9). This sign is more difficult to gauge because there is no hatred index that we can use to determine how much the world hates Christians. But we can look at evidence of rising hatred in two of the areas of the world where Christianity used to dominate: America and Europe.

For centuries, these two centers of human civilization have been the breadbasket of the Christian religion. But over the past several decades, these have become a wasteland of Christian support, Europe more so, with America following closely behind. Laws and regulations are stripping back Christian influences in places where we once flourished. Christianity is not celebrated anymore in many nations; rather, it is suppressed. Jesus forewarned that before the end of the world, all nations would hate us because of our allegiance to Jesus.

Many will turn away from the faith.

A third sign Jesus gave his disciples to signal the end of the world is, “At that time many will turn away from the faith” (Matthew 24:10). Pew Research recently reported on the rapid rise of the “nones,” those in America who self-identify as not being affiliated with any religion or denomination. From 2007 to 2015, this number increased from 16 percent to 23 percent, while self-identifying Christians dropped from 78 percent to 71 percent.

While the number of Christians still predominates, the most alarming trend is that the majority of ‘nones’ are in the younger generations, meaning that American Christians are failing to pass on their faith to their children, and Christianity (in this country at least) is one to two generations from a tipping point crisis. Whatever that ends up looking like, it should not surprise us. Jesus forewarned us two thousand years ago that before the end of the world, many would turn away from the faith.

The love of most will grow cold.

Because the end of the world is such a momentous event, Jesus gave His disciples several signs to look for to mark its arrival. The fourth indication Jesus gave in Matthew 24 is, “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold” (Matthew 24:12). Like the second sign (all nations will hate Christians), this one is difficult to gauge because there is not a way to gauge how hot or cold our love is scientifically, but we can sense an increase in wickedness all around us.

Look at where our morals are as a nation. Look at our views on ethics, morality, and sexuality. We’re living in a new moral age, one that is increasingly wicked. Because of that, the love even of Christians has grown cold. Look at the lifeless, empty, dying churches that dot the landscape. Jesus forewarned that this would be a sign of the coming of the end of the world.

The gospel will be preached in all nations.

The final sign Jesus gave His disciples was a positive one, “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14). Not all the news out there is bad. In spite of rising persecution, Christianity is proving resilient as Jesus continues to build His church (Matthew 16:18). Missionaries are being sent out from nations far and wide to provide a witness to all nations and all peoples. The International Mission Board has identified 3,203 remaining people groups in the world that have not heard of the gospel of Jesus. We know who they are and where they live. As missionaries continue to go and reach the unreached, Jesus’ final prediction of what must happen before the end of the world is quickly becoming a reality.

4 Signs of the Antichrist The coming of the Antichrist is a sign of the end.

The identity of the Antichrist has long been a source of both debate and anxiety for Christians. The Bible warns that many people will be taken in by his lies or fail to recognize him for what he is. No Christian wants to be one of those who is deceived by this frightening and demonic figure.

Given that the stakes are nothing more or less than a person’s eternal soul, a great deal is riding on successfully identifying the Antichrist. The internet is filled with bloggers and preachers alike claiming that this political figure or that rival preacher is the Antichrist. Speculation is not confined to the depths of the web either. Innumerable churches have heard sermons warning about what the Antichrist will say, and countless Bible study groups have debated where the Antichrist will originate.

The Bible is peppered with verses warning about this false prophet and alluding to the acts that will reveal him for what he truly is. The problem and source of debate come from trying to weave dozens of cryptic remarks and prophetic hints into a clear picture. Unfortunately, someone has yet to turn the myriad of clues and references to now-ancient empires into a single cohesive portrayal. This leaves Christians stuck in the same uncertainty that all the debate is attempting to clarify. That said, the continued study of the Scriptures does leave us with a general idea of what the Antichrist will be like. Here are four signs that will hint at the Antichrist’s true identity.

Charisma.

The Antichrist will sway many people to his side. This fact is undeniable based on the descriptions of the Antichrist throughout the Bible. He will be admired, and the odds are good that he will be a smooth talker who will win people over through his ability to speak “great things.” Those who follow the Antichrist will become zealous and follow him unquestioningly. They will revile and persecute those who are suspicious of the Antichrist or disavow him. In this regard, many believe the Antichrist will be similar to Adolf Hitler.

Hitler was known to be highly charismatic. Those who actually met him in life say that he was extremely skilled at making connections with people and saying exactly the right thing at the right time. Hitler projected a certainty that lent the authority of his opinion, and he had a talent for sinking his claws into a person’s subconscious thoughts or desires. The Antichrist is likely to have similar gifts. He will give voice to what people believe but are reluctant to say and, in doing so, gain their utter loyalty.

Cleverness.

The Antichrist will also be clever. Daniel 11 describes the Antichrist as taking control through “intrigue,” and Daniel 8 says he will be a “master of deception.” This supports the idea of the Antichrist as something akin to a charming, clever psychopath. That calculating cleverness will help bring the Antichrist to global prominence in multiple ways.

One of those ways is as a military tactician. Verses in both the Book of Revelation and the Book of Daniel describe the Antichrist as being an influential military leader, an unrivaled military genius in his time who will develop a tendency to attack when his victims feel secure.

Another is the Antichrist’s ability to avoid what people would see as scandalous behavior. It is said that he will not “regard…the desire of women,” thus avoiding the typical scandal of an affair. Revelation also says that the Antichrist will be given the authority to “make war.” His actions, violent as they will be, will be supported by not just zealous followers but by what the average person will recognize as legitimate authority.

Conqueror.

The Antichrist will have the cunning to be a successful military leader. Revelation and Daniel both describe the Antichrist’s military prowess, but there is a difference between being a talented tactician and being a conqueror. The Antichrist is undoubtedly the latter.

Revelation 6:2 says that the Antichrist will go “forth conquering, and to conquer.” He will take over lands that did not belong to his people and hold them. His conquests will likely take place at least partly in the Middle East. The theory of the Antichrist’s involvement in the Middle East is standard, especially the notion that part of his strategy will be to make peace with Israel before attacking the Jewish people.

The Antichrist’s conquests will also be seen as legitimate. Revelation 13 says that the Antichrist will be “permitted to wage war on God’s holy people” and “given [power]… to extend his authority over every tribe and people.” Revelation 13 also states bluntly that the Antichrist will succeed in conquering God’s people, at least for a time.

Economic control.

In addition to gaining military control over much of the world, the Antichrist would gain economic control. In Revelation 13, the infamous number of the Beast is discussed, and it is related to the Antichrist’s control of the economy. According to the Scriptures, the Antichrist will compel all people to be “marked with an inscription” on their hands or foreheads. Only those with this mark will be allowed to “buy or sell.”

Whether the Antichrist will use force or charisma to compel people to accept his mark is not stated. It could, however, be born of simple practicality. People may be presented with the choice of refusing to take this mark or losing their chance to participate in any sort of buying or selling. The Antichrist’s charisma and cunning would allow him to make this seem like a reasonable requirement of trade. With society accepting this new regulation, even those who disagree with the Antichrist oblige and take the mark so that they can feed their families.

Despite the sheer number of times the Antichrist is mentioned in the Bible, there is little that will definitively identify him before he has the world under his thrall. Christians must be vigilant and be sure to maintain a questioning attitude. The spell of charismatic men and women can be dampened through logic. After all, those who experienced Hitler’s rise said that many of his speeches could be “refuted by reason.” Be wary of things that sound perfect and of those who seem to have all the answers, especially in today’s divisive time. Reason serves as a strong barricade to the sort of zealotry such a clever, charismatic leader will breed.
