Avera, who suffers from mental illness, crossed into Gaza and has been held since 2014. This month Hamas released a video purportedly claiming to show Avera alive. The terror group, who continued holding an individual with mental health issues captive for nearly a decade, is seeking to use him to extort Israel for Hamas terrorists in Israeli jails, which is indescribably cruel. But the weak or muted responses from so-called human rights defenders, who seek to attack Israel at every opportunity, is a damning indictment of their true intentions.
Hamas must return Avera home safely, which should be a cause that anyone with an ounce of human compassion should champion. But instead, they refuse to, and it again highlights that groups like Hamas, with complete moral bankruptcy, are the reason there is no peace in the region.
