Houston FBI announces 5-day ‘multi-agency’ training for nuclear attack

Texans were told not to be alarmed as a major city played host to a week-long “multi-agency” training exercise in preparation for a nuclear attack.

Friday afternoon, the FBI’s Houston, Texas field office released a public statement in conjunction with the city’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) regarding a five-day exercise beginning May 1. Meant to allay concerns over the presence of a large-scale operation, they assured no “risks to area residents.”

“A large-scale, multi-agency nuclear incident TRAINING EXERCISE will take place May 1-5 in southeast Houston and Harris County,” the statement read. “The training exercise will NOT pose risks to area residents. Please do not be alarmed by training-related activity.”

It continued by detailing the training area and said, “The training exercise will take place from in and around NRG Park/SH 288 to SH 146 to I-10 E to Hwy 225 and in and around Ellington Field. Please do not be alarmed by training-related activity, including presence of military personnel/aircraft and people in protective equipment.”

Agencies involved included the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of Homeland Security, Houston Police Department and Harris County Sheriff’s Office as well as various fire and emergency management teams, Fox 26 reported.

“The exercise is an opportunity for participating entities to practice and enhance operational readiness to respond in the event of a nuclear incident in the United States or overseas,” OEM declared.

According to the Daily Mail, using nuclear weapons historian Alex Wellerstein’s NukeMap, a potential nuclear strike from North Korea using a 150-kiloton warhead, like that tested in 2017, would result in the death of nearly 130,000 people with fallout covering an area of three square miles.

The FBI did not specify why Houston was selected for the week-long training exercise but, as noted, Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base was included in the area for the activities.

While tensions abroad would seemingly justify readiness for the devastating impact that a domestic nuclear strike would produce, critics couldn’t help but call out the FBI’s recent training mishap where a Delta pilot had become the victim of what was meant to be a mock interrogation. As reported, “It took nearly an hour before the agents realized they went to the wrong room and uncuffed the pilot.”

Others couldn’t help but feel alarmed in spite of the message from the agency as trust in the government has steadily been on the decline. Reactions were reminiscent of those following a public service announcement released by the New York City Emergency Management Department in July 2022 that alerted citizens to steps they should take should a nuclear strike hit the Big Apple.

“Don’t ask me how or why, just know that the big one has hit. Ok?” the presenter said before, “So what do we do?”

The pre-planned training exercise just so happened to fall at the same time a manhunt is underway for illegal immigrant and suspected murderer Francisco Oropesa, wanted for allegedly shooting five people in Cleveland, Texas, north of Houston.
