Heaven is a Real Place

There’s no mistake in Jesus’s mind that heaven is a real, physical place. Twice in John 14:1-6, he uses the Greek word topos, which is translated “place.” For example, He says, “I go to prepare a place for you.” In the ancient language in which the New Testament was written, topos refers to a real, physical place. Furthermore, Jesus uses physical references like “rooms” and “house” to describe where the Father lives.

Heaven is a Different Place than Earth

Heaven is not the good life we make for ourselves on earth. The “little slice of heaven on earth” you created for yourself at the beach or in the mountains is a ghetto compared to the place Jesus is preparing for those who love and trust Him. Jesus said, “I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14). The word “go” implies He is leaving this earth for another beautiful place.

Heaven is the Father’s Big House

How do we know heaven is the Father’s big house? Jesus said to His disciples in the Upper Room, “In my Father’s house are many rooms” (John 14). An older translation of the Bible says “many mansions,” leading some to believe Jesus is building for them a mansion in the sky. Exactly how big is heaven? Read Revelation 21 for a description of the massive new heaven and the new earth God is preparing, and the new Jerusalem.

The Way to Heaven is through Jesus

Jesus said to His disciples, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father but by me” (John 14:6). The early church carried forward this idea.
