MSNBC host Chris Matthews is being ridiculed online after he struggled to comprehend the fact that trees grow in the United States.
The remarks came while Matthews was on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on April 9, where he was whining about President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada. He specifically highlighted the amount of lumber imports that the U.S. receives from Canada and questioned how Americans could possibly “create more” lumber to replace what the country will lose because of the tariffs.
“I watched on the evening news last night, one of the other networks, and I watched the issue of lumber. Now, you see, we get so much of our lumber, our two-by-fours from — from Canada,” Matthews said. “That’s where we get it from. Canada! We get our newsprint from up there, for newspapers. The fact is, we get — what are we going to do? Have more lumber made in the United States now?!”
“What is our plan now?” he added. “Oh, we’re not going to import wood, so we’re going to make more wood? We’re going to create more wood. Is that it?! I don’t think we’re in a position to simply replicate the imports coming into this country with our own products. It can’t always be done. And I think — wood’s an example of that. Wood. Are we going to make more wood in this country because of our trade deal?! I don’t think so.”
Social media users were quick to mock Matthews for seemingly not understanding that the U.S. could “create more wood” very easily, since trees do, in fact, grow in America.
“That’s the idea,” an X post from the official Rapid Response 47 account read, sharing a screenshot of a Trump executive order signed on March 1 that kickstarted the “Immediate Expansion of Timber Production” inside the U.S.
Townhall.com mocked Matthews with a fake quote, sharing a meme of his face with the quote: “Wood doesn’t just grow on trees!”
“Chris Matthews is unaware of the existence of trees in the United States,” author Jim Verdi wrote, ending his post with two clown emojis.
“Market illiteracy is one thing. I don’t know what this is … we impose tariffs and libs think wood vanishes. Globalist mind rot is a thing,” Townhall’s Matt Vespa wrote.
“Libs dont know where wood comes from,” Jack Posobiec, senior editor at Human Events, wrote.
