Whenever we are faced with a difficult situation or circumstance, our immediate response is the ask the Lord to change what is happening. This is something both my wife and I can relate to. This morning, I kept hearing in my spirit, “Change me, not my circumstances!
I will be honest, it caught me off guard, because frankly, it is not what I wanted to hear. I wanted the Lord to say, “Okay! Bingo! Everything is fixed!” Well, that is what I wanted to hear.
But then I was reminded of something Paul wrote:
“So tremendous were the revelations that God gave me that, in order to prevent my becoming absurdly conceited, I was given a physical handicap—one of Satan’s angels—to harass me and effectually stop any conceit. THREE TIMES I begged the Lord for it to leave me, but his reply has been, ‘My grace is enough for you: for where there is weakness, my power is shown the more completely.'”
Huh? That’s not what I wanted Him to say . . . now I often hear people say, “You see, that ‘physical handicap’ Paul supposedly had, was actually, one of Satan’s angels that were coming to afflict him. Well, that may be, but I’ll tell you what, Paul still had to deal with the “handicap,” whatever it was. But then Paul showed me what I am supposed to learn:
“Therefore, I have cheerfully made up my mind to be proud of my weaknesses, because they mean a deeper experience of the power of Christ. I can even enjoy weaknesses, suffering, privations, persecutions and difficulties for Christ’s sake. For my very weakness makes me strong in him.”
Hey you, yeah you. The one who is in that job you hate, and you who are sitting in that wheelchair, ooh, ooh. and you over there who is alone . . . quit asking the Lord to change your circumstance! Instead learn to enjoy your Lord’s presence. Bask in the peace of His Love. Learn to enjoy your weakness, your sufferings and difficulties. Rather than asking Him to change your circumstance, ask Him to give you the Grace you need to face the circumstance!
