Testing and Trials

Testing and Trials

Do you remember that when Jesus received His baptism, he was led by the Holy Spirit for The Test. Notice it was not “a” test, but “the” test. That is something all of us must face. I don’t know what matter of test you will face—and I can’t assure you that there will only be one test. But in this story, found in the 4th chapter of Matthew, the Devil was ready to give “the” Test to Jesus.
Jesus prepared for the Test by fasting forty days and forty nights. That my friends is a chunk of time (and we think, we are Holy doing a three day fast). But that forty-day fast left him, of course, in a state of extreme hunger — in fact, on the brink of starvation. The Scripture says that he fasted forty days and forty nights; then he was hungry!” I bet he was! But that was also a sign that starvation had begun. You can fast for several days and your hunger will disappear. Your body begins to draw energy from the reserves you have, and there will be no hunger. However, once those reserves are gone, hunger returns — meaning starvation has begun. Jesus was in the state of starvation, and the Devil took advantage of it.
He throws in the first test: “Since you are God’s Son, speak the word that will turn these stones into loaves of bread.” In other words, “I know you’re hungry, you have the ability to do something about it, satisfy that need you have.”
I have a friend who the Lord has trained to run. And in the training, the Lord has met her during every run and has given her tremendous insights into herself, her family and into His Kingdom. One day she was running, and it was the first day she was going to reach 5 miles. But before she completed that run, she noticed a shortcut that would have made her run much easier. Suddenly she began hearing a voice say, “Oh, it’s not that a big deal. You are pretty worn out and need a rest. Just turn, and you will be able to finish the race much faster.” But she ignored the voice, and the Lord rewarded her great victory.
Oh, that’s just a silly run, what is so important? She could do the run any day. Ah, but that’s the point. The Lord was guiding her steps and for her to turn off the path he had given her would have weakened her resolve the next time. Each time the Lord sets a “goal,” but you give up, it becomes much easier to give up during future trials.
How can you relate to that? Hmm . . . “You are being overwhelmed with debt, you think your God has called you to do this? If you go back to doing what you used to do, you could make more.” Does that sound familiar?
How about, “Hey, losing that weight isn’t that important. Besides, eating that one cookie won’t offset your weight loss too much. Go ahead and take a bite, it won’t hurt you.”
“Look, you could quite any time you want. Sure, everyone is telling you that you need to quit drinking, but what do they know. One small drink doesn’t matter, does it?” Does that sound familiar?
You can mull that over some, because the next test the Devil threw at Jesus was taking him to the Holy City, Jerusalem, the heart of the Hebrew faith. He sat him on top of the Temple and said, “Go ahead—jump! If you’re really God’s son, he will save you.” He even quoted Scripture! Psalm 91, to be precise: ‘He has placed you in the care of angels. They will catch you so that you won’t so much as stub your toe on a stone” (Matthew 4:6).
Do you see what is happening here? Do you see Satan’s deviousness in this? He isolated a single promise from Scripture — and he tempted Jesus to cast his whole life on that one verse. He was saying, “You say God is with you. Well, prove it! Your Father has already allowed me to harass you this much. Where was his presence in that? You can prove he is with you right now. You can prove it all by jumping. Go ahead, jump! If your father is with you, he will provide a soft landing. Then you can base your confidence on that. Think of the testimony that will bring to all the unbelievers! If not, you might as well die rather than go on wondering if you are on your own. You need a miracle to prove the Father is with you.”
How did Jesus respond? “Jesus countered with another citation from Deuteronomy: ‘Don’t you dare test the Lord your God’” (Matthew 4:7). Well, that’s interesting. . . What exactly did Jesus mean here by “testing “God?
Ancient Israel is an example. Ten times the Lord had proved himself faithful to the Israelites. God’s people received visible proof that their Lord was with them. Every time, the people asked the same question: “Is God among us or not?” Their continual asking if He was there and would help them is what he calls, “testing the Lord.” Jesus uses this same phrase —“testing God” — in his reply to Satan. What does it mean? It shows us that it is a grave sin to doubt Yahweh’s presence or care. We are not to question whether He is with us. Whether He will care for us. Or if He will indeed meet our needs. He made those promises, and unlike us, He keeps His promises. Moses sternly put it this way:
El is not like people. He tells no lies.
He is not like humans. He doesn’t change his mind.
When he says something, he does it.
When he makes a promise, he keeps it (Numbers 23:19)
Copy that an paste on your bathroom mirror so that every time you look at yourself, you will remember our Lord’s faithfulness! Just like with Israel, our Father has already given us an entire body of evidence. First, we have in His Word multiple promises. Second, we have our own personal history with Him — a testimony of the many times He delivered in our lives. Third, we have a Bible full of witnesses to His actions in past centuries.
The Scriptures are clear. There is no ambiguity found: We are to walk with our Father by faith and not by sight. Otherwise, we will end up like faithless Israel. That phrase, “By faith and not by sight,” is from II Corinthians 5:7. The Amplified Version renders this verse, this way:
“For we walk by faith—we regulate our lives and conduct ourselves by our conviction or belief respecting man’s relationship to God and divine things, with trust and holy fervor; thus we walk not by sight or appearance”
I want to go into this with a little more depth later, but for now understand the weapons of your enemy and don’t listen to his lies. I have told you this many times before. It is T.I.S: Thoughts, Ideas, and Suggestions. Control your thoughts and the things you meditate on. If your ideas are contrary to our Lord’s Word, ignore them; cast them aside and never bring them up again. When you hear those suggestions to compromise, and to take the “easy” road, follow Peter’s instructions and take them captive. Say, “NO! I will not entertain those suggestions!” I am deliberately sending this out today because I presume you will gather with other with other believers for worship and fellowship. So as you begin your day, fix your eyes and attention on the Faithfulness of your Father. Carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero!

Oh Pride, You Pain In My Butt

Oh Pride, You Pain In My Butt

Yesterday I wanted you to determine what “possesses” you; what brings you pride and determines your value in the world. And everything I discussed yesterday, may explain “why” our God makes the wisdom of the world foolish (now did you notice that I did not say that He made the wisdom of world “seem” or “appear” foolish. That’s because He made it to be foolish). But it does not explain, “how ” our God makes it foolish.
    Well, Proverbs 16:18 says:
    Pride precedes a disaster,
and an arrogant attitude precedes a fall
Another way to say that is that the wisdom of the world is destroyed vis-à-vis man’s pride going before the destruction, as will his haughty spirit before the fall.
To me, one of the most humorous example of this is found in the fifth chapter of 1st Samuel. This is where the Philistines captured the ark of God and brought it into the house of Dagon who was their god.

What’s interesting about this particular Dagon god is that the Assyrian’s, also known as the Ninevites, also worshipped this pagan deity. He was seen as half man, and half fish. The reason I point this out is because of the way God used Jonah and a fish to reach the Ninevites to bring them to repentance.
I suppose you could say that Yahweh knew it would take a fish barfing out a man to turn them from their half man/half fish god to the true God. Now, as I was saying, in I Samuel 5 we see what happened when the Philistines captured the ark of God:
Early the next day the people of Ashdod saw that Dagon had fallen forward on the ground in front of Yahweh’s ark. So they took Dagon and put him back in his place. But the next morning they saw that Dagon had again fallen forward on the ground in front of Yahweh’s ark. Dagon’s head and his two hands were cut off and were lying on the temple’s threshold. The rest of Dagon’s body was intact (I Samuel 5:3-4)
Please forgive my sense of humor but when they saw their god on its face as if it was worshiping the Ark of the Lord, wouldn’t they know something was fishy was going on? (Sorry, I just had to say it). But let’s be honest. Doesn’t worshiping a fish seem foolish? And folks think we’re foolish. But wait a minute. Their foolish fish-god fell before the true God I worship. If that wasn’t foolish enough, they were so foolish they still believed that when their god fell and broke, he could still help them when they fell and were broken? Bring that forward. How is that different from folks today who worship the foolish gods of the world?
Not only that, don’t you think it is foolish to believe that a god who can’t take care of himself would take care of you? The same way that the Ark of God can make Dagon foolishly fall when it is brought in, the Word of God makes any god foolish fall as well.
To illustrate how our God will turn the “wisdom” of  men into foolishness, I want to tell you a story that dates back to the early 20’s. Now this story has been told several different ways, but I presume one of them may be true.

As the story goes, there was a professor of philosophy who was a deeply committed atheist. His primary goal for one required class was to spend the entire semester attempting to prove that God couldn’t exist. His students were always afraid to argue with him because of his impeccable intellect.
At the end of every semester, he would say to the class of 300 students, “If there is anyone here who still believes in God, stand up!” In twenty years, nobody ever stood up. They knew what he was going to do next. He would say, “Anyone who believes in God is a fool because if God existed, he could stop this piece of chalk from hitting the ground and breaking. Such a simple task to prove he is God, and yet he can’t do it.”
And every year he would drop the chalk onto the tile floor of the classroom and it would shatter into a hundred pieces. All the students could do nothing but stare. For 20 years all of his students, even the Christians, had been too afraid to stand up.
That is until a particular freshman happened to enroll in the class. He was a Christian, and had heard the stories about this professor. He had to take the class because it was one of the required classes for his major. Though he too was afraid, he prayed that every morning he would have the courage to stand up no matter what the professor said or what his classmates thought

He had to take the class because it was one of the required classes for his major. Though he too was afraid, he prayed that every morning he would have the courage to stand up no matter what the professor said or what his classmates thought
Finally, the day came. The professor said, “If there is anyone here who still believes in God, standup!” Much to shock of the professor and the class of 300, he stood up. The professor condescendingly shouted, “YOU FOOL! If nothing, I have said all semester has convinced you that God doesn’t exist. Then, you are a fool! If God existed, he could keep this piece of chalk from breaking when it hit the ground!” He proceeded to follow his standard argument, and dropped the chalk, but this time, as he dropped the chalk, it slipped out of his fingers, off his shirt cuff, into the pleats of his pants, and off his shoe. And as it hit the ground, it simply rolled away, UNBROKEN.
The professor’s jaw dropped as he stared at the chalk. He looked up at the young man and then ran out of the lecture hall. The young man who had stood up proceeded to walk to the front of the room and share his faith in Jesus Christ for the next half hour. 300 students stayed and listened as he told of God’s love for them and of salvation through Jesus Christ.
Is that just a fable? One of those tales we Christians like to promulgate? Well . . . maybe. I am sure it has been told so many times, that some of it has been embellished some. But it does illustrate how our God takes the “wisdom” of men and makes it to be foolishness.

Hanukkah celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, of purity over adulteration, of spirituality over materiality .When they sought to light the Temple's menorah (the seven branched candelabrum), 21 centuries ago the Holy Land was ruled by the (Syrian-Greeks) so they found only a single cruse of olive oil that had escaped contamination by the Greeks; miraculously, the one-day supply burned for eight days, until new oil could be prepared under conditions of ritual purity. ...To commemorate and publicize these miracles, the sages instituted the festival of Chanukah. At the heart of the festival is the nightly menorah (candelabrum) lighting: a single flame on the first night, two on the second evening, and so on till the eighth night of Chanukah, when all eight lights are kindled.
On Chanukah we also add the Hallel and Al HaNissim in our daily prayers to offer praise and thanksgiving to G-d for "delivering the strong into the hands of the weak, the many into the hands of the few... the wicked into the hands of the righteous." Tonight at sundown Hanukkah begins! God calls all of His people to Honor His Festivals!

      • The reason we lost our protection, our hedge around this country is our lack of going to our Father God. We as a nation, turned away from God and lost our National protection and thus 911 happened. This was a Harbinger as it was back then to Israel to Repent, They did not turn back to God, nor did America as a country. This is what has become of our country, how sad it has become when we are told that as a once Christian Country it is better not to offend anyone and not to Post a Metal Cross on Ground Zero were for the first time in Amercian History a single act of international terrorism destroyed and killed thousands of men woman & children. How dare these men and woman of Science or what ever the heck there god may be take away what this single symbol stands for in the founding of this great American Country were they even dare to have the freedom to practice there religion in the first place. Look if you do not like it simply walk a way, treat it with respect and just walk a way. Time to learn some respect. I may not like your god of Atheism but I do not condemn your believes or make you take down your symbols, whatever they maybe. Carl

PS> I do however feel that as Amercians, the people of Amercia we have kept our Christian Amercian heritage in tact. We need to make our numbers even grow more these last days in time. I feel that if not for the strong Christian & Jewish Presence in this our Great American Society, Amercia would have fallen many, many years ago. Our Country's strenght is God's gift to us. Carl
