Fake news? The Russians did not hack the U.S. power grid

The Washington Post caused a mild social media stir Friday when they posted a story alleging that the Russians had hacked the U.S. power grid via a utility company in Vermont.
In a story boasting the ominous headline, “Russian hackers penetrated U.S. electricity grid through a utility in Vermont, officials say,” the Post said the following:
A code associated with the Russian hacking operation dubbed Grizzly Steppe by the Obama administration has been detected within the system of a Vermont utility, according to U.S. officials.
While the Russians did not actively use the code to disrupt operations, according to officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a security matter, the discovery underscores the vulnerabilities of the nation’s electrical grid. And it raises fears in the U.S. government that Russian government hackers are actively trying to penetrate the grid to carry out potential attacks.
However, by late Friday night, after The Burlington Electric Department was finally contacted and could release a statement — something the Post didn’t obtain before publishing their piece — the headline had changed to something less ominous due to the utility company’s statement.
The Daily Caller reports that the statement read as follows:
“Last night, U.S. utilities were alerted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of a malware code used in Grizzly Steppe, the name DHS has applied to a Russian campaign linked to recent hacks,” a spokesman for the Burlington Electric Department said. “We acted quickly to scan all computers in our system for the malware signature. We detected the malware in a single Burlington Electric Department laptop not connected to our organization’s grid systems.”
The Vermont Public Service Commissioner Christopher Recchia told The Burlington Free Press, “The grid is not in danger.”
The Post has since changed the headline of their piece to read, “Russian operation hacked a Vermont utility, showing risk to U.S. electrical grid security, officials say.”
Charges of “fake news” have been leveled throughout the 2016 election season as being responsible for inflating or lying about both candidates depending on the source of the report. Concerns about it became so pervasive that media giants such as Facebook and Google vowed to research and begin addressing how news is shared on their platforms with the intent of controlling the spread of false reports.

VATICAN CITY, VATICAN - MARCH 13: A woman holds rosary beads while she prays and waits for smoke to emanate from the chimney on the roof of the Sistine Chapel which will indicate whether or not the College of Cardinals have elected a new Pope on March 13, 2013 in Vatican City, Vatican. Pope Benedict XVI's successor is being chosen by the College of Cardinals in Conclave in the Sistine Chapel. The 115 cardinal-electors, meeting in strict secrecy, will need to reach a two-thirds-plus-one vote majority to elect the 266th Pontiff. (Photo by Dan Kitwood/Getty Images)
In all of 2016, nearly 90,000 Christians were martyred around the world, according to a new study by an Italian research group.
According to the Center for Studies on New Religions, which plans to release its full report next month, a Christian was martyred about once every six minutes in 2016, making them the most persecuted religious group in the world.
Massimo Introvigne, director of CENSUR, told Vatican Radio last week that approximately 70 percent of the martyred Christians were from “tribal villages” in Africa because Christians often refuse to take up arms during conflicts.
The other 30 percent, according to the study, were Christians who fell victim to terrorism or governmental persecution.
Still, the number of Christians who were martyred in 2016 is likely more than 90,000 because the study was unable to include data from China or India, two east Asian countries that have large Christian populations, because of the “underground” nature of churches in those countries.
There is some positive news, however, according to RT.com. The number of Christians being martyred decreased in 2016 compared to 2015 from 105,000 to 90,000.

Report: Senate preparing legislation to condemn, sanction U.N. after anti-Israel resolution
WASHINGTON, DC - SEPTEMBER 20: Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) speaks during a news conference about military assistance to Israel at the U.S. Capitol September 20, 2016 in Washington, DC. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is threatening to stall approval of an agreement on military assistance between the U.S. and Israel by introducing legislation that would boost the aid above what the countries agreed on. Congressional Republicans are moving swiftly to condemn the United Nations after the U.N. Security Council last week passed an anti-Israel resolution that bans the Jewish nation from building settlements in land claimed by the Palestinians.
According to a report from Politico, Republican Sen. Jerry Moran (Kan.) is planning to introduce legislation next week condemning the international body for their anti-Israel resolution, calling it a “sense of the Senate” resolution. The proposal is intended to be accompanied by similar legislation in the House, according to Politico, signaling Congress’ serious desire to sanction the U.N. as quickly as possible.
Florida Republican Rep. Dennis Ross is expected to be the House member to introduce the measure in the House, congressional aides told Politico.
More from Politico:
A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said he had no announcement on whether the chamber would vote on Moran’s resolution or another one like it. Several aides in both parties say there are bipartisan discussions about the Senate censuring the U.N. given the outrage over last week’s Israel vote.
The Senate is expected to quickly proceed to a budget resolution next week, which would give senators the ability to offer unlimited nonbinding amendments at a majority threshold and is often used as a platform for votes on extraneous issues. If a disapproval resolution were introduced and voted upon separately, it could require 60 votes if a senator filibusters it, tying up the Senate floor.
In addition, because of the support Israel receives from both Republicans and Democrats, any legislation sanctioning the U.N. over their anti-Israel resolution is expected to garner bipartisan support in both chambers of Congress.
Still, other senators want more. Sens. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) and Ted Cruz (Texas) have said since last weekend that the Senate needs to take drastic action against the U.N. and defund them of all monetary support from the U.S.
It’s not clear if either senator plans to introduce legislation to make that happen, but they continue to be two of the more outspoken voices against the U.N.
