Trump slaps GOP for vote on ethics watchdog

President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday morning criticized House Republicans for a vote "weakening" Congress's independent ethics watchdog. 

"With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it may be, their number one act and priority. Focus on tax reform, healthcare and so many other things of far greater importance!" Trump tweeted, adding the hashtag #DTS — an acronym for drain the swamp, the anti-corruption slogan from Trump’s campaign.

House Republicans voted Monday evening to change the rules governing the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE), an independent watchdog agency that the House created in 2008.

The new rules would give the House Ethics Committee oversight of the OCE and address complaints that lawmakers have long had about the office and its operations.

The new rules, passed over the oppositions of Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), would restrict the OCE from making public statements, allow the House to halt investigations, and stop anonymous reporting, among other things.

Incoming White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer stressed during a conference call with reporters Tuesday that Trump is more concerned about the timing of the move than the substance of the plan.

"He says their focus should be on tax reform and healthcare. It's not a question of strengthening or weakening, it's a question of priorities," Spicer said.

The Democratic Party seized on the distinction, blasting Trump for not speaking out against the House's move.

“To be clear, Donald Trump did not oppose gutting the Congressional ethics watchdog — in fact, he called the office ‘unfair’ and his top advisor defended weakening the program just this morning. Trump just said it was much more urgent for Republicans to pass massive tax cuts for the wealthy and throw as many as 30 million Americans off their health insurance," Democratic National Committee spokesman Eric Walker said in a statement.  

"Any comments Donald Trump makes regarding the ethics of public officials must be understood within the context of his own corruption, and taken with a mountain of salt.”

Kellyanne Conway, Trump's incoming White House counselor,downplayed criticism of the Republican move during an interview with MSNBC Tuesday morning. 

While Conway said in the interview three hours before Trump's tweet that she hadn't talked to him about the issue, she said it would be to characterize the House's plan as weakening ethics rules.  

 

"The abuse of the process has led to some of those being investigated — either House members, or their staffers and witnesses — some have complained they've been denied or have had their due process rights compromised," she said. 

 

Then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) spearheaded the creation of the Office of Congressional Ethics when she took over the leadership after the 2006 midterm elections. 

 

As part of her push to clean up corruption in Congress, she promised to "drain the swamp," according to The Associated Press — the same mantra Trump embraced during his campaign.

Maybe it Really is That Simple

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8 (NIV)

Life has a way of being complicated. I wish the right decision were always obvious. But whether that decision has to do with relationships, responsibilities or resources, I can get confused. Especially now.

I’ve come to a time in my life where I’m not sure which path to take. At one time God’s direction was clear. But now … things have changed. What was once life-giving, seems life-draining. It’s time to do something new.

But what if I’m wrong? Perhaps God is calling me to persevere despite the hardship. Or maybe I’ve completed my assignment, and it’s time to move on. Couldn’t God just use a holy highlighter and give me a sign?

Have you ever faced a decision where the right choice was unclear?

I used to think God had one path for me, and I had to choose rightly or miss God’s best. But more than ever, I realize God wants my heart in the right place, and the way I serve Him is secondary.

Throughout history, God’s people have consistently gotten these two things mixed up. It’s in our human nature to want to control and manipulate things, even God’s approval. There’s some comfort in creating rituals and rules; then we always know where we stand in comparison.

Although God certainly established rules for our good, He never meant for those rules to replace a relationship with Him. God wants us to trust Him rather than a set of guidelines.

With as many good choices as we face today, it can feel impossible to know which one is right for us. We can either over-commit because we want desperately to serve God or under-commit because we have decision-paralysis or we’ve just given up trying.

The Israelites seemed to have the same problem. For generations, they either became legalistic trying to please God with their religious sacrifices, or they gave up and grew hard hearts.

In the time of the prophet Micah, the people’s hearts were far from God. They’d created a religion based on rituals and rules that no one could keep. Some even abandoned God and worshipped idols. And yet God continually called them back to a relationship with Him.

Micah tried to tell the people that following God was really much simpler than they made it out to be: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8).

I imagine some of the religious folk having a problem with that simplified version of faith. Or maybe agreeing but wanting to add a few hundred rules to it. But Micah clearly communicated God’s desire through that prophesy — just three things are required: justice, mercy and humility.

It’s interesting to note that although there is action involved, each of those requirements starts with a soft and loving heart. We won’t act justly if we harbor resentment or hate. We won’t show kindness and mercy if we seek to serve ourselves. And a prideful heart will always walk ahead of God.

Could those three conditions apply to me today? Maybe all God is asking of me is to stand for what is right … to choose kindness … and to walk closely to Him, submitting my will daily.

Perhaps I’m making my choice harder than I have to. If I strip away all the man-made rules and all the expectations I’ve placed on myself, and if God hasn’t clearly spoken to me, then the only thing that matters is if my heart is in the right place: near God’s.

If God’s pursued the hearts of His children for thousands of years, He is certainly still pursuing yours and mine. And we won’t find a relationship with Him through routine obedience or service. In fact, God the Father sent His Son Jesus so those who believe in Him could have God’s presence residing in us — the closest relationship possible.

If you are facing a choice today that’s kept you frozen in indecision, I hope God’s Word encourages you. Maybe it really is this simple. Act justly. Love mercy. Walk humbly with God. Now, the choice is yours.

Heavenly Father, thank You for not adding burdens to this already-difficult life and for making Your way simple. Help me to not make it any harder than it has to be, and to be more concerned with the condition of my heart than making the perfect choice. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Famed fortuneteller predicts our future for 2017

Lee Shing Chak is a “world-class fortuneteller who combines the ancient art of feng shui and the modern practice of statistics to divine what the future holds.” He wants us to know that he predicted the spread of Ebola, the death of Osama bin Laden, a nuclear crisis in Japan, and the winner of the 2014 World Cup.

Now he is making predictions for us based on our birth year. If you were born in 1958 (like me), 1970, 1982, 1994, or 2006, yours is the “year of the dog.” (I’m not sure I appreciate the title.) He tells us that 2017 will be “fairly busy for you, with little time to relax and unwind.” And he warns that we should prepare for a sudden illness or serious natural disaster.

Of course, so should everyone else.

The story goes on, but you get the idea. For each category, Mr. Lee predicts good fortune as well as challenges for which we should prepare. As with all such fortune-telling, his predictions are so ambiguous that their fulfillment depends not on him but on us.

According to the American Federation of Certified Psychics and Mediums (yes, this group really exists), 39 percent of men and 69 percent of women admit to having consulted a psychic. Fortune-telling is especially profitable during difficult economic times such as the recent recession. One man spent more than $700,000 on a Manhattan psychic who promised to fix a romantic relationship.

Before you and I smugly conclude that we would never consult a fortune-teller, let me ask you: Have you ever made an appointment with a doctor in hopes of preventing disease? Have you ever asked a financial advisor to help you prepare for the future? Do you check the weather forecast before heading out of the house each morning?

But there’s a difference, you say, between trusting a psychic and consulting a doctor. Of course, you’re right. I have worked in medical ethics for years and have the highest respect for health care professionals (as well as financial experts and meteorologists). But aren’t these professions an attempt to predict the future—or at least prepare for it?

Why is that a bad thing? It’s not—it’s actually an excellent exercise in good stewardship. God wants us to manage our health, finances, and safety as effectively as possible. The problem comes when we trust fellow mortals more than we depend on the divine Master.

Then we are in danger of the sin of presumption.

The reason our secular culture is so obsessed with preparing for the future is that so few trust the God of the future. We would do well to remember Jesus’ parable of the “rich fool” to whom God said, “This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?” (Luke 12:20).

Prepare for tomorrow, but prepare even more for eternity.

So, make your plans for the new year and the new day, then trust them to God’s providence. Prepare for tomorrow, but prepare even more for eternity. And your peace “which surpasses all understanding” will be a powerful witness to a fearful culture (Philippians 4:7).

The safest place to be is in the center of the will of God.

What will you do?

God put mankind here on earth to be caretakers of all He created, that all covers everything, every animal, bird, tree, plant, fish, the ground, and most of all each other.

As caretakers it is our duty to look out for one another, not our government we need to take responsibility for our own actions and choices , take care of our family, friends, neighbors and those less fortunate.

So I ask, knowing God has equipped you, gifted you and commanded you to watch over and take care of those around you and the things He has given us including where we live, how will you respond?

Will you be a good steward of all He has blessed you with, or will you follow the ways of the world and squander all you have for momentary acts of selfishness?

There is always opportunities to serve God by serving one another, if your not serving , your disobeying , God is calling us to serve one another as He has served us through Jesus.

“Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, all the earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female. God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth.” God also said, “Look, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the surface of the entire earth and every tree whose fruit contains seed.
