Mercy for the 'Dreamers'

On June 15, 2012, President Obama signed an executive order to protect those who arrived illegally to the United States as minors.
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals provides a two-year window to shield these people from deportation and allow them to work. They must have been under 16 when they arrived, be in school or have completed school, and have no criminal record.
The order produced consternation on two fronts. First, the nature of the action. Many feel that immigration policy, legal and illegal, should be handled comprehensively and that the first order of business must be fixing border security. Second, the form of the action — a presidential executive order. Many see this order as changing immigration law, which would therefore be unconstitutional because legislation is required.
Now we have a new president who was elected in no small part to deal with immigration. And he is moving forward deliberatively to implement his campaign pledges.
However, President Trump has so far not indicated what he intends to do regarding these so-called “dreamers” — the name derived from the DREAM Act, the legislation originally proposed to process these undocumented immigrants.
According to reports, the president is hearing different sides on this, both inside the White House and inside the Republican Party. Some say “no exceptions” and want to repeal this executive order. Others want to continue the protections for these “dreamers” — after all, they were brought here as minors and have grown up here — but want to handle the issue with legislation.
Running a country is art, not science. If it were science, we could write software and send everybody in Washington home. Unfortunately, we need leaders who understand what our country is about to make tough calls when things are not black and white.
The immigration issue is about law and law is about defining the lines you don’t cross. Whether it is the physical line that defines the borders of our nation or the legal lines that protect the life, liberty and property of citizens.
Those who came here illegally of their own volition have violated both and this cannot be tolerated. President Trump said, “A nation without borders is not a nation.” I would add to this that a nation without law is not a nation. You need both.
Those whose arrived as minors, because their parents violated the law, do, I believe, deserve special consideration.
Certainly, as Christians, we understand that justice has two components — judgment and mercy. Judgment is the implementation of the law in its severity. Mercy is understanding and appreciating when there should be exceptions.
Too often we have those who just want severity. And too often we have those who just want mercy. Yet again, you need both.
Sens. Lindsey Graham and Dick Durbin have introduced legislation that would essentially replicate DACA. It would give all the same protections and have the same requirements, but extends the window to three years rather than two.
I think it is a good idea, but not enough. We should extend mercy to those who were brought here as minors illegally. But we should not allow them to forget that this is a nation of law and they received mercy.
We should assure they have learned or are learning English, that they know or are learning American history, and that they know or are learning our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution.
Perhaps we should also include a requirement for some kind of national service, possibly in the U.S. military.
Regarding our laws, we should aspire toward the ideal to which Moses instructed the Israelites in the desert — “You shall safeguard and perform” these laws such that the other nations of the world will say, “Surely a wise and discerning people is this great nation.”

Sally Yates Nominated For ‘Profile In Courage’ Award

Sally Yates Nominated For ‘Profile In Courage’ Award

By now most Redstate readers are familiar with the name Sally Yates. The former acting Attorney-General was fired by President Trump after Yates publicly stated she would refuse to defend his controversial Executive Orders regarding temporary travel bans from terrorist hot zones.
The hasty orders sent many Americans into hysterics, prompting protests and airports and a federal judge to order a halt to the orders until measures are more clearly and fairly defined.
Although opinions vary on whether or not Yates was right to defy the order and make that defiance so public, it isn’t breaking news that any employee who openly defies their boss’ instructions isn’t far from the unemployment line.
However, Yates has the good fortune to be acting Attorney General under the first president that left-wing America has hated with this much passion and rage since the last president that left-wing America hated with this much passion and rage. She can now leave her job knowing that she will forever be pulling income from the speaker circuit and surely a book about the 2 minutes it took it her to tell her employer she wasn’t going to do her job is not far behind.
To add to her growing accolades, Yates has been nominated for a “John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award” by Rep. Jackie Speier (D-California….of course).
Trump’s administration is barely two weeks old. With a third of America currently in a state of perpetual outrage it isn’t hard to imagine there will be many, many more “Profile in Courage Award” nominees coming from Democrats over the next four years.

New videos in undercover investigation reveal ultrasounds at Planned Parenthood aren’t available to women wanting to keep their babies
Washington, D.C. (January 31, 2017) – Today, Live Action released two new investigative videos that show Planned Parenthood has ultrasound technology available for abortions, but not for women who want to continue their pregnancies and check the health of their babies.
“Ultrasounds for Killing, Not Care at Planned Parenthood” and “Planned Parenthood Managers: Ultrasounds for Abortions, Not Health Care” are two new videos in Live Action’s“Abortion Corporation” investigation highlighting Planned Parenthood’s lack of resources for pregnant women other than abortion. Last week’s video, “The Prenatal Care Deception,” has garnered more than 14 million views on Facebook in less than a week.
Live Action is releasing the investigative series as Congress and the president plan to redirect over $400 million in Medicaid funding away from Planned Parenthood to thousands of federally qualified local health clinics and also as the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act makes its way to the Senate.
Planned Parenthood uses ultrasounds to determine a baby’s age and position in the womb before it kills her. In the “Ultrasounds for Killing, Not Care” video, investigators posing as pregnant women asked 68 Planned Parenthood facilities for ultrasounds to check the health of their babies, but only three centers would provide them. The remainder either used ultrasounds for abortions or did not perform ultrasounds at all. Investigators received responses like:
“No, we don’t do any ultrasounds for prenatal care. We do them when we’re doing abortions, but not for any other reason.” – Council Bluffs, IA, Planned Parenthood
“No. Nope. Not – not something we offer. Well, we do have to do an ultrasound with an abortion, but we don’t offer them for – we can’t do anything to make sure that the pregnancy’s fine.” – St. Louis, MO, Planned Parenthood
“We only do ultrasounds if you are terminating.” – Corning, NY, Planned Parenthood
“One would think a corporation that constantly touts its care for women, uses ‘parenthood’ in its name, and has ultrasound machines would want to ensure healthy pregnancies by allowing women to access ultrasounds to monitor the development of their babies,” said Lila Rose, president and founder of Live Action. “But showing a woman an ultrasound image would reveal the beating heart as well as moving arms and kicking legs, destroying the ‘clump of cells’ myth Planned Parenthood perpetuates to try to make abortion easier to accept.”
Investigators’ observations were confirmed by Sue Thayer, a former Planned Parenthood manager in Storm Lake, IA. “If Planned Parenthood is really about choice, they would show women the ultrasound. And they don’t,” she told Rose in an interview in the “Planned Parenthood Managers: Ultrasounds for Abortions, Not Health Care” video. She said that Planned Parenthood won’t show pregnant mothers the ultrasound pictures of their babies, and in fact, “They turn the monitor away so the mom can’t see it.”
Live Action is investing $500,000 in a digital ad campaign to push the video series out to millions of Americans. Future videos will further expose Planned Parenthood’s lack of health care services and include the testimonies of former Planned Parenthood workers and managers.

A challenge from Lila Rose
“I anticipate Planned Parenthood will respond as it usually does by denying the findings of this investigation,” said Rose. “That’s why I encourage media outlets to contact any of the 68 centers that Live Action did – or any others – and ask them if they offer ultrasounds to check the baby’s health if a mother wants to carry her baby to term. The media will find results similar to ours.
“We know that Planned Parenthood lies repeatedly and misleads the public, as it did during Live Action’s 2011 child sex trafficking exposé. Two weeks ago, Live Action released public records that show Planned Parenthood failed to report child sex traffickers to local authorities as it had claimed. Planned Parenthood also lied about retraining thousands of its staff to identify and report sex traffickers. Instead, a former manager says the sessions were used to train staff how to identify undercover journalists. You can read the article and see the evidence here.”

EXCLUSIVE: Pentagon believes attack on Saudi frigate meant for US warship

EXCLUSIVE: Pentagon believes attack on Saudi frigate meant for US warship

Suicide bomb attack may have been meant for American warship
The Iranian-backed suicide attack targeting a Saudi frigate off the coast of Yemen on Monday may have been meant for an American warship, two defense officials told Fox News.
The incident in question occurred in the southern Red Sea and was carried out by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels. Two Saudi sailors were killed and three were wounded. At first the ship was thought to have been struck by a missile.
But based on new analysis of a video showing the attack, American intelligence officials now believe this was, in fact, a suicide bomber whose small boat rammed the side of the Saudi vessel.
In the audio heard on the video, a voice narrating the attack shouts in Arabic, "Allahu akbar [God is great], death to America, death to Israel, a curse on the Jews and victory for Islam."
U.S. defense analysts believe those behind the attack either thought the bomber was striking an American warship or that this was a “dress rehearsal” similar to the attack on the USS Cole, according to one official.
The attack, near the Bab al Mandab Strait connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, occurred in the same area where U.S. Navy warships came under missile attack in October.
An American destroyer shot down those incoming missiles -- the first successful engagement in combat using an American SM-2 missile.
USS Nitze, an American destroyer, retaliated soon after, launching Tomahawk missiles on October 13 at multiple Houthi radar sites in Yemen.
This latest incident came a day after President Trump spoke by phone with the Saudi King to discuss setting up safe zones for refugees in Syria and Yemen. Senior U.S. defense officials who spoke with Fox News say they're concerned by this latest incident, but are confident American warships can defend themselves.
The United States has supported a Saudi-led air campaign against the Houthi rebels in Yemen since 2015.
