The View Host: Christians “Get Caught Up” in the Abortion Issue But Jesus Didn’t Really Care

NATIONAL   KRISTINE MARSH   AUG 1, 2017   |   4:03PM    WASHINGTON, DC
Tuesday on ABC’s The View, the sole self-admitted pro-life Democrat on the panel, Sunny Hostin, urged her party to reclaim the moral party status from Republicans. But instead of being encouraged by reports that said Democrats were now opening their doors to pro-life candidates, Hostin claimed abortion shouldn’t be the leading moral issue for Christians in her party. Instead, she claimed, Jesus was already on the Democrats side, since caring for the earth, the poor and refugees were his primary teachings.
The discussion came after multiple media outlets, including The Hillreported yesterdaythat Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairman Ben Ray Lujan said there would be no “litmus test” on abortion anymore for Democratic candidates. He went on to say that Democrats need to pick candidates that fit their districts, regardless if they are pro-abortion or anti-abortion.
After co-host Whoopi Goldberg introduced the topic, fellow co-host Sunny Hostin admitted she was a pro-life liberal. Host Jedediah Bila asked Hostin if she received “backlash” for holding that viewpoint. Hostin admitted she did before making a rallying cry for Democrats to become the party who sets the “moral objective for the country.” However, if you thought she was talking about Democrats becoming pro-life, you’d be wrong:
HOSTIN: I definitely face backlash but I’ve got to tell you it’s time for Democrats to realize — there’s no moral party. The Republicans should not have the corner on setting the moral objective for the countryIt’s time for Democrats to embrace— because if you really are looking at Jesus’ words, the most important things to him were justice and mercy, so real biblical sort of perspectives are saving the earth–
WHOOPI: [talking over Hostin] What if you’re not a Christian?
HOSTIN:–welcoming strangers, taking care of the poor.
Whoopi continued to interrupt Hostin, interjecting that Christianity should have no part in the Democrats’ abortion discussion.
WHOOPI: What if you’re not a Christian? Jesus’ words don’t have the same respect–

HOSTIN: If you just look at–
Whoopi went on to espouse the same nonsensical viewpoint she has many times before. Namely, that you can be “pro-life” and be supportive of abortion for anyone but yourself. So basically there is no difference between “pro-life” and “pro-choice” in Whoopi’s terms. Unsurprisingly, this is exactly what Hostin, the “pro-life” host believes as well, as she went on to confirm before the commercial break:
WHOOPI: Here’s the thing. If you believe that abortion is morally wrong, then you never have to have one. The law doesn’t say you have to have an abortion. The law says if you feel you need to, we are not going to stand in your way. And that is how the law should read. [cheers and applause]
Hostin went on to reiterate that Democrats shouldn’t “get caught up” on the abortion issue, and that true Christianity was based off of “justice and mercy” (which apparently abortion has nothing to do with?) She argued again that caring for the poor, welcoming refugees and climate change activism were the true identifiers of the faithfulness in the Democrat party:
HOSTIN: And that is true. But my point is, everybody sort of gets caught up, especially Evangelicals and Catholics as well and people of — Christians get caught up on the abortion issue, but if you really are a faithful person, if you really are a follower of the Bible and a follower of Jesus, again, the most important issues are justice and mercy. The most important issues are caring for the poor, welcoming strangers, caring for our Earth.
HOSTIN: But the Democrats must embrace the faithful community because right now —
BEHAR: You are an example of a Democrat that would be–
WHOOPI: They do, they do.
BEHAR: If you were in the position to vote pro or con Roe v. Wade, you would say leave it, right?
HOSTIN: Yes, because I think that while I don’t believe in abortion, other people have their choices–
BEHAR: She is the poster child for that.
HOSTIN: But many people feel this way, Tim Kaine, Joe Biden… [cut to commercial break]
The discussion never picked up after the commercial break.

Doctors Asked Parents of Boy With Same Condition as Charlie Gard: Do You Want to Just Let Him Die?

Doctors Asked Parents of Boy With Same Condition as Charlie Gard: Do You Want to Just Let Him Die?

NATIONAL   MICAIAH BILGER   AUG 1, 2017   |   10:11AM    LANSING, MICHIGAN
A Michigan family is fighting for care for their very sick infant son who has a disease similar to Charlie Gard’s.
Russell Cruzan III, a 4-month-old from near Kalamazoo, Michigan, has a rare mitochondrial disorder that is very similar to the condition that British infant Charlie Gard had before he died Friday, WOOD TV News reports.
Michelle Budnick-Nap, Russell’s mother, said her son began to experience health problems in June, but doctors were not sure what was wrong with him until recently.
“(We) kept asking the nurses why. Why is he not eating? Why isn’t he thriving?” she asked.
A kidney test finally revealed that Russell – affectionately known as “Bubby” – has mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome 13, a rare disease that affects only a few children in the world. It causes muscle weakness, loss of mobility, decreased kidney function and the inability to swallow, the report states.
Doctors gave Russell a very slim chance of survival, and asked his parents if they wanted to give up and let Russell die. They said no; they want to do everything possible to give their son a chance at life.
“It’s really hard to be told that your child’s chances of even making it to 2 are like 50 percent,” his mother said. “… I always tell them, ‘Bo, we want to do everything we can. We want to fight.’”
The infant was home with his family at the time of the local news report, though he has been in and out of the hospital during the past two months. His parents hope to raise money for Russell to undergo an experimental treatment in Boston, according to the report. Their insurance will not cover all the expenses, so they are raising money through aYouCaring page.
“We have worked tirelessly to gain the attention of the drs administering these treatments and we are now scheduling [appointments] with 2 of them,” his parents said.
Here’s more from the report:
They say a doctor at Boston Children’s Hospital, who is one of the top mitochondrial physicians in the country, has agreed to treat Russell if a doctor at Bronson can get the insurance company will authorize it. If Russell goes to Boston, he would get a treatment aimed at helping his healthy mitochondria replicate.
“I don’t want to say that we’ve come to terms with it. We love him more than anything in the world,” Budnik-Nap said.
Like Russell’s family, Charlie Gard’s parents hoped to have him transferred to the United States for an experimental treatment. The raised more than $1.5 million for his medical care.
His parents said they knew the chance of the experimental treatment working was slim, but they wanted to try anyway for Charlie’s sake.
However, the courts and hospital refused to allow them to transfer their son to another hospital. About a month ago, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the hospital can remove Charlie’s life support and allow him to die.
Last week, Charlie’s parents’ ended the legal battle. Their lawyer Grant Armstrong said experts confirmed that it was too late to treat their son. The BBC reports Armstrong “told the presiding judge Mr Justice Francis that US neurologist Dr Michio Hirano had said he was no longer willing to offer the baby experimental therapy after he saw the results of a new MRI scan last week.”
Hirano previously said Charlie had an 11 percent to 56 percent chance of benefiting from the experimental treatment. He and a group of doctors examined Charlie and gave their expert opinions to the judge.
Questions remain about whether Charlie could have benefited from the experimental treatment, had it not been delayed for months during the legal battle between Charlie’s parents and the hospital. The court battle began in March.
Charlie died on Friday after a judge ordered that his ventilator be removed. He would have turned 1 year old on Aug. 4. His family plans to use the money their raised for his care to begin a charity to help other children with rare diseases.

Professor Who Wanted President Trump Shot and Killed Has Been Fired

Professor Who Wanted President Trump Shot and Killed Has Been Fired

NATIONAL   CHRISTINE ROUSSELLE   AUG 1, 2017   |   6:09PM    WASHINGTON, DC
Kevin Allred, a self-described “Beyonce Professor,” has been fired from Montclair State University in New Jersey before the start of the school year after saying on Twitter that hehopes someone would shoot President Donald Trump. In a now-deleted tweet, Allred said that Trump was a “f-cking joke” and that he hoped someone would “shoot him outright,” followed by a shrugging emoji.
He then followed up that tweet clarifying that wishing someone was dead is not the same as a death threat.
Allred has since locked his Twitter account from public view, but he announced his firing and then slammed “Trump’s base” and “Trump trolls” for lashing out and pressuring the university to fire him. Additionally, Allred said that Montclair State had “caved” to conservatives and was “firmly taking a side” against liberal viewpoints like his.
In a somewhat hilarious twist, someone dug up an old tweet where Allred criticized universities for hosting Milo Yiannopoulos and said that his “vitriol” does not fall under free speech.
This is not Allred’s first brush with controversy. In November, he complained that he had been forced to undergo a psychiatric evaluation after his tweets following Trump’s election made students at Rutgers (where he was employed at the time) feel threatened.
Granted, it’s not entirely clear that Allred’s tweet was 100 percent the reason why he was fired, and there could be another reason. But to suggest that a state university in New Jersey of all places is somehow a bastion of conservatism is…stretching it.
I don’t know if Allred should have been fired for his tweet. While I don’t think it was an appropriate thing to say, nor do I think I’d ever go out of my way to take one of his classes (despite the fact that they apparently consist of watching Beyonce music videos, are self graded, and have no homework), he does still have the First Amendment–even if he thinks it doesn’t apply to vitriol like what he spewed.
