Obama rips Trump, GOP in fiery speeches for Midwest Dems
https://www.apnews.com/06ec76cf0cf14a...

Former President Barack Obama criticized President Donald Trump’s tenure in office Friday in fiery speeches in Milwaukee and Detroit that took aim at him and other Republicans for “making stuff up.”

The speeches were among Obama’s sharpest and most direct takedowns of Trump’s presidency, although the former president was careful to not mention Trump by name. He said the “character of our country is on the ballot” in the first midterm election since Trump took office.

Obama cited a recent Trump comment that he would pass a tax cut before the November election. Obama then told the crowds in high school gymnasiums that “Congress isn’t even in session before the election! He just makes it up!”

At one point Obama said in Wisconsin: “Here’s the thing. Everything I say you can look up.”

Obama’s visits were to urge people to vote for Michigan and Wisconsin’s Democratic candidates. While Trump was frequently the target of his criticism, he did not spare Republicans generally and said they are lying when they say they want to protect people with pre-existing conditions while trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

“What we have not seen before in our public life is politicians just blatantly, repeatedly, baldly, shamelessly, lying. Just making stuff up,” Obama said. “Calling up, down. Calling black, white. That’s what your governor is doing with these ads, just making stuff up,” he said, referring to Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker and his assertions that he wants to protect health care for those with pre-existing conditions. Walker is being challenged by Democrat Tony Evers.

Obama rips Trump: 'It's wrong to spend all your time from a position of power vilifying people'
https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/27/politi...

Former President Barack Obama made a thinly veiled jab at President Donald Trump on Friday evening, saying it was wrong to use a position of power for attacking others as "enemies of the people and then suddenly pretending that you're concerned about civility."

"I would like to think that everybody in America would think it's wrong to spend all your time from a position of power vilifying people, questioning their patriotism, calling them enemies of the people and then suddenly pretending that you're concerned about civility," he told a cheering crowd.
Trump has repeatedly called the media "fake news" and "the enemy of the people." Following the discovery of multiple packages sent to people whom the President has spoken against as political enemies, as well as a suspicious package in CNN's New York bureau at the Time Warner Center on Wednesday, Trump tweeted Thursday that "a very big part of the Anger we see today in our society is caused by the purposely false and inaccurate reporting of the Mainstream Media that I refer to as Fake News."
Obama said Friday, "It shouldn't be Democratic or Republican to say you don't try to punish political opponents or threaten the freedom of the press just because you don't like what they say."

Trump says U.S. could send up to 15,000 troops to border
https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-says...

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday the United States could send as many as 15,000 troops to the border with Mexico, as he hardens his stance against a caravan of migrants fleeing violence and poverty in Central America.

"As far as the caravan is concerned, our military is out...we'll go up to anywhere between 10 and 15,000 military personnel, on top of Border Patrol, ICE and everybody else at the border," Trump told reporters at the White House.

The Trump administration on Monday put the number of troops it aimed to send to the border at over 5,200.

Trump has sought to use immigration as an issue to motivate Republican voters ahead of the Nov. 6 elections next week, where Republicans will seek to maintain control on both congressional chambers.

As a presidential candidate before the U.S. election in 2016, Trump promised to harden immigration laws and build a wall along the southern border with Mexico, but implementation of his signature campaign promise has been slow.

A caravan of Central American migrants estimated to number at least 3,500 people left Honduras in mid-October and is now in southern Mexico on its way to the U.S. border.

Trump's tough response to the caravan has been an issue in the congressional elections. Democrats accuse the president of stoking fears of illegal immigration to help Republicans win votes.

The Pentagon has said it has identified about 7,000 active-duty troops, including about 2,000 on standby, that could be deployed to the southern border.

Millions in Mexico City set to go without water for days
Read more at https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/...

MEXICO CITY: Millions of people in Mexico City are set to be without water for at least four days as authorities undertake maintenance work on one of the major supply systems.

Half of the capital's eight million population are expected to be affected, with a further three million people from the neighboring State of Mexico also impacted.

Authorities are preparing for the huge challenge by employing tanker trucks to supply strategic areas such as schools, hospitals and prisons.

Mexico City is one of the largest metropolises in the world. The supply cut is due to start on Wednesday and last until Saturday, although the system won't return to full capacity until Nov 8.

And it's not confined to that one area, either. Of the 2.5 million homes in the city, almost 569,000 don't receive water on a daily basis, while 45,950 have no running water at all.

Mexico City's water tables, built on the swamps of the old Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, have been exploited for decades causing certain areas of the city to sink by between two and 30 centimeters (0.8 to 12 inches) a year.

Some estimates also claim that 40 per cent of the city's water is lost in leaks.

Russia’s Veiled Threat to Israel: ‘Hot Heads Better Watch it in Syria’

The Russians issued a barely veiled warning to Israel not to attempt any “provocative actions” in Syria, as Russia completes its transfer of air defense systems to the Syrian Army.
The Russian Defense Ministry released a veiled warning to Israel that it should not launch any “provocative actions” in Syria, as Russia completes its transfer of T-300 anti-aircraft missile systems and Polyana D-4 air defense systems to the Syrian Army.
“As you know, in order to increase the level of security of the Russian military personnel, aviation flights and the protection of objects in Syria, the delivery of Russian S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems and Polyana D-4 air defense systems were completed,”  Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said in a press briefing on Wednesday.
“At present, Russian advisers are preparing Syrian military personnel for combat work on these modern air defense systems. We believe that it is advisable for ‘hotheads’ to adequately assess the current situation in the region and refrain from provocative actions on the territory of Syria,” he added.
The current transfer of Russian anti-aircraft missiles to Syria was decided upon by Moscow after an incident on September 18th, when Syrian missile defense systems shot down a Russian plane carrying 15 Russian soldiers over the Mediterranean sea while responding to an Israeli airstrike.
Moscow blamed Israel for the incident, claiming it had not been briefed in time about the planned strike.
While the event triggered a minor diplomatic crisis between Jerusalem and Moscow, Israel has continued to carry out military actions in Syria since the incident, a senior Israeli defense official said on Monday.
Earlier this month, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman hinted at a similar message, telling Kan Bet Radio that “just because you don’t hear something, doesn’t mean nothing is happening.”

GOP Senators Urge Trump: Halt Nuclear Talks With Saudis

Republican senators asked U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday to suspend civilian nuclear talks with Saudi Arabia.
A group of Republican senators asked U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday to suspend civilian nuclear talks with Saudi Arabia after the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and Saudi actions in Yemen and Lebanon.
The five U.S. lawmakers, led by Senator Marco Rubio, said they would use the Atomic Energy Act to block any U.S.-Saudi nuclear agreements if Trump did not cut off talks.
      Saudi judgment in question
“The ongoing revelations about the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as well as certain Saudi actions related to Yemen and Lebanon, have raised further serious concerns about the transparency, accountability, and judgment of current decision-makers in Saudi Arabia,” the senators wrote.
“We, therefore, request that you suspend any related negotiations for a U.S.-Saudi civil nuclear agreement for the foreseeable future,” said the lawmakers, who included senators Cory Gardner, Rand Paul, Dean Heller, and Todd Young.
Representatives for the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the letter, which was first reported by NBC News.
Khashoggi, a leading critic of Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, disappeared after visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2. The death of the Washington Post columnist, a U.S. resident who had American children, sparked global outrage and pitched the world’s top oil exporter into crisis.
The United States has called for transparency in the investigation of Khashoggi’s death and revoked the U.S. visas of some Saudis over the incident. Trump has said Prince Mohammed bore ultimate responsibility for what happened to Khashoggi but has also cited Riyadh as a strong ally.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary James Mattis on Tuesday called for a cessation of hostilities in Yemen and urged the start of U.N.-led negotiations to end the civil war next month.
Saudi Arabia’s official comments on Khashoggi’s death have shifted from initially denying any involvement to saying the killing was premeditated. Both Saudi Arabia and Turkey are investigating Khashoggi’s death.
