On Thursday, a letter from Principal Waylon Bates at Parkway High School in Louisiana was sent home to student athletes and parents informing them that players will not be allowed to take a knee during the national anthem when it is played before ballgames. Anyone caught doing so could be removed from the team.
“The LHSAA (Louisiana High School Athletic Association) allows school principals to make decisions regarding student participation in the National Anthem while competing in athletic contests and games,” Bates wrote. “Parkway High School requires student athletes to stand in a respectful manner throughout the National Anthem during any sporting event in which their team is participating.”
“Failure to comply will result in loss of playing time and/or participation as directed by the head coach and principal,” Bates added. “Continued failure to comply will result in removal from the team.”
Bates said the decision to crackdown on would-be protesters is to ensure “a positive environment for sporting events” and to prevent “disruption.”
And social justice Twitter is ticked. Race-faker and Black Lives Matter leader Shaun King could barely catch his breath: “And it has begun. High schools are now following Trump’s order.”
Actress Alyssa Milano’s thumbs got busy: “My god. What are we teaching our children?”
Others alerted the ACLU, including Marvel writer Dan Slott. The ACLU responded, “The Supreme Court ruled that students don't have to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance—that goes for the national anthem on the ballfield too.”
When did requiring students to be respectful to others become such a contentious stipulation?
