In 2019, Cook County announced the first-ever opportunity for capital funds to build animal shelter capacity in our County.
After an exhaustive application process, a professional panel recommended the South Suburban Humane Society receive $6,000,000 towards a new animal resource campus. On May 21, 2020, this recommendation was approved by the Cook County Board of Commissioners at their monthly meeting.
We are absolutely thrilled to bring a beautiful new home to the pets and people of the south suburbs. Our communities deserve a state-of-the-art, progressive, and welcoming campus. The campus will house the main shelter, our Spay/Neuter Clinic and our Low Cost Veterinary Services Clinic under one roof to serve pets and the people who love them. Our recently opened Homewood Adoption Center will stay where it is so we can continue to do even more!
We are still in negotiations about where this new building will be located so stay tuned.
We are hosting a press conference with the County on Thursday to share this news widely with our communities.
In order to build the campus we want to build and to have some operating reserves for expanded operations, we need to raise an additional $2.5 million. Conducting a capital campaign in the midst of a pandemic is not ideal. But we believe in this vision and we know you will too when we can share even more with you.
