A Queens community is reeling after 13-year-old Sanjay Samuel died days after being shot in the head outside a Dunkin’ Donuts in a shocking broad-daylight attack.

The shooting happened around 8:20 a.m. Monday morning in Cambria Heights, right in front of the shop at Linden and Springfield boulevards. Police say the gunman, described as a young male on a moped wearing a black hoodie, black pants, white sneakers, and carrying a backpack with the “JAWS” movie logo, opened fire on the teen.

Samuel, a student at Martin Van Buren High School, was rushed to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, where he was placed on life support. He succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.

Sources say there may have been some sort of dispute between the two boys, but details remain unclear. A 14-year-old girl who went to elementary school with Samuel described him as “a good kid” who was quiet, friendly, and playful. “He was still a cool person. He would always be friendly with people and play around,” she said, adding that the tragedy may have been linked to a situation from before.

The young suspect fled the scene on his moped and has not yet been caught. No arrests had been made as of Wednesday, and police continue to search for the gunman responsible for the senseless killing.

Samuel’s death has left classmates, neighbors, and loved ones devastated as they mourn a boy described as kind, respectful, and full of life.
