Gary Varvel: The Left’s Words Are Inspiring the Wrong PeopleA new Humor Me cartoon caption contest plus my Charlie Kirk connection
Some Democrats continue to demonize President Trump and the right, and it’s igniting unstable hotheads. The modus operandi of leftist shooters has been to carve messages on their shell casings. The Charlie Kirk shooter wrote, “Hey, fascist, catch.” The Dallas ICE shooter wrote, “Anti-ICE.” And the Minneapolis church school shooter scrawled numerous messages of hate on his weapons and shell casings. This rhetoric is clearly fueled by the left, which repeatedly brands Trump a “fascist,” “Nazi,” “dictator,” or “Hitler.” The Federalist’s Brianna Lyman notes that California Gov. Gavin Newsom has especially “escalated rhetoric that makes political violence inevitable.” Only Ohio Democrat Sen. John Fetterman has sounded a note of reason. He warns, “Unchecked extreme rhetoric, like labels as Hitler or fascist, will foment more extreme outcomes. Political violence is always wrong — no exceptions.” When Democrats are called out for their incendiary language, they retreat to the claim that “both sides are guilty.” But the fact is, the right hasn’t inspired their supporters to murder. I talk about the dark spiritual forces in America, drugs and the future of AI in Bible prophecy. Charlie Kirk Followed God in life and Me on XCharlie Kirk followed me on X. It’s not quite as cool as it sounds. He had 6.1 million followers, and I was one of 184,000 people he followed. We never met or communicated personally, but I like to think he saw my cartoons from time to time. To borrow an idiom, I am “small potatoes” compared to the people I draw or write about. Proverbs 22:29 says, “Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.” That perfectly describes Charlie Kirk. He was amazingly gifted by God and skilled in his work from an early age. And God placed him before the most powerful people—the “kings” of this world.
