The Schumer Shutdown is forcing some Americans to make sacrifices they can’t afford to make. DEVOTIONALThe Verse for Today:“Then Moses said to him, ‘If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.’” — *Exodus 33:15* Are you using all of your resources? Moses didn’t want to go unless God’s presence went with him. Here’s why: A story is told of a boy who was trying to move a boulder. His father asked him if he was using all of his strength. The boy said, “Yes,” but even when he tried harder, he still couldn’t budge the rock. His father asked again, “Are you using all of your strength?” The boy replied, “Yes.” Then his father said, “No, you’re not. You haven’t asked me.” During the Constitutional Convention of 1787, the members clashed over their local interests until Benjamin Franklin offered an appeal for divine intervention. He stood and said: > “I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth—that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? > > We have been assured, Sir, in the sacred writings, that ‘Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.’ I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without His concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel. We shall be divided by our little partial local interests; our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall become a reproach and a byword down to future ages.” Franklin then proposed that they begin every morning with prayer led by a clergyman. America is the envy of the world because God has truly blessed this nation. Why? I firmly believe it is because America has a godly heritage. Our founders asked God for help—just as Moses did 3,600 years ago. This simple principle applies to your personal life today. Do you want God’s best? Or would you rather try to do everything yourself? As for me, I don’t want to be like the boy who tried to do the impossible in his own strength. I’m going to use divine resources.
