Just Resist Him!

Remember how yesterday we discussed Jesus’ experience in the wilderness, when the Spirit had led him to be “tested.” We never looked at Satan’s last offer when the Devil took Jesus to the peak of a huge mountain. He pointed out all the earth’s kingdoms, how glorious they all were, and said, “They’re yours — lock, stock, and barrel. Just go down on your knees and worship me, and I will give them to you.” (Matthew 4:9).
Yeah, I realize this sounds pretty outlandish, even ridiculous. I mean, how could it ever be considered a temptation? Ah, well believe it or not, this was a powerfully enticing offer. Satan was challenging Jesus, saying, “I promise that if you will simply bow down at my feet, in a single act of worship, I’ll quit the fight. I’ll give up all my power over these realms. I won’t possess or enslave anyone else. I know that you love these puny men enough to be accursed by God for their sake. So, why wait? You can sacrifice yourself right now, save yourself from a whole bunch of torment and free the world from this moment on!” Ooh, what an enticing thought.
Now first realize, or remember, that as Jesus described him, he is the “Father of lies.” So he couldn’t be trusted with anything. But besides that, why was the devil willing to give up all his power just to have Jesus bow down to him? Well, for one reason, the devil was trying to save his own skin, err scales, err whatever it is that covers him. But the Satan knew his eternal destiny would eventually be sealed by this man (Yes, we know that it was at Calvary, but that fiend didn’t know that (1 Corinthians 2:8). Anyway, he might have known that if he could just keep Jesus from going to the cross, he would spare himself the fate that awaited him.
Oh, I see that look in your eye. You’re wondering, “That’s all well and good, and very interesting, but how could this possibly relate to me?” Well, that’s easy. This Satan still tempts the righteous with offers just like this. He comes to us with threats and accusations. He will tell you, “Oh, you don’t have to actually worship me — because I already have access to your flesh. I know all your weaknesses. So, go ahead and testify about your freedom in Christ. But at the moment you are singing your loudest praises, I’m going to overpower your mind with ThoughtsIdeas and Suggestions, and I will bring up your sins and failures so powerfully you will become so disappointed and discouraged of ever being free. Quite frankly, you are powerless.”
Those are the lies that he will toss at you . . . continually . . . relentlessly . . . So, what are you going to do about it? How are you going to answer his accusations? Well, I can think of two things to do first, as James instructed, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7), and how do you do that:. “. . . take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (II Corinthians 10:5). That’s it! That is all you need to do . . . oh, and believe that it is true. You see, it doesn’t matter how many temptations Satan throws at you. You don’t have to fear any sin from your past. If Christ’s blood has covered it, then the devil can’t do anything to separate you from your Father!
So, put on your fighting gloves and step into the ring. Don’t worry. You will “clean his clock” with one punch of the Word of God!
