No rate change, few hints from first Fed meeting of Trump presidency

Federal Reserve officials offered no hints about its future plans Wednesday as it announced a widely-expected decision to hold off on raising its interest rate target after the first monetary policy meeting during the Trump administration.
Investors anticipated that the Fed would not change its short-term rate target of 0.5 percent-0.75 percent, after raising it in December. Instead, they were looking forward to clues in the Fed's statement about possible changes the rest of the year.
But the statement offered very little to work with. It continued to describe economic growth as "moderate." The only major change was a note that business and consumer sentiment have risen as Trump has taken office, although the officials gave no suggestion about how that could influence growth.
"This statement reads like the Fed could have drafted it back in December, which indicates that they are not yet reading any major macro-economic impacts into the policies announced by the administration so far," said Tara Sinclair, a senior fellow at the Indeed Hiring Lab.
Bond market prices Wednesday afternoon suggested that investors don't expect the Fed to raise rates at its next meeting in March, but then to act in June.
There were no dissents at Wednesday's meeting, which included several new voting members.
In December, officials at the central bank expected that they would raise rates three more times in 2017. But those plans were highly dependent on what actions President Trump and the Repubican-led Congress might take on taxes and spending.
Big tax cuts, especially in combination with new infrastructure spending, could prompt the Fed to raise rates faster to try to slow spending and prevent inflation from rising out of control.
Fed officials also had to gauge, during their two-day meeting, just how strong the economy is. With the unemployment rate at 4.7 percent in December and unemployment benefit claims running at the lowest levels in decades, there was some evidence that the Fed may have to tighten money faster.

More recently, some Fed officials have begun discussing the possibility of not only raising rates, but also beginning to let the Fed's $4.5 trillion balance sheet shrink by ending reinvestments in bonds.

It's the Constitution, Stupid...

ALEXANDER'S COLUMN

It's the Constitution, Stupid...

Our Founders and Constitution prescribed that the specific role of Supreme Court justices was, and remains, to uphold Rule of Law.

“[T]he opinion which gives to the judges the right to decide what laws are constitutional and what not, not only for themselves, in their, own sphere of action, but for the Legislature and Executive also in their spheres, would make the Judiciary a despotic branch.” —Thomas Jefferson (1804)
In 1992, when Bill Clinton was overwhelming George H.W. Bush’s campaign for re-election, his chief adviser, that Ragin' Cajun James Carville, framed Clinton’s successful campaign around these words: “It’s the economy, stupid.”
In the most recent presidential election, Donald Trump’s advisers framed his campaign around that same theme, combined with one other: “It’s the Constitution, stupid.”
In fact, Trump’s victory was, in large measure, due to his commitment to nominate constitutional constructionists to the Supreme Court. As I noted repeatedly last fall, the presidential election was “much more than a quadrennial vote — it is a quarter-century vote for the composition of the Supreme Court.”
This week, conservatives across the nation are unified in declaring Mr. Trump’s nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch, currently serving on the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, as his nominee to replace the SCOTUS seat vacated by the revered late Justice Antonin Scalia.
This nomination is an unequivocal victory for Rule of Law, which is why it will triple the howling hysterics of statist Senate Democrats and their wailing mass of minions across the country.
Notably, despite how the Democrats and their Leftmedia echo chambers want to frame this issue, it is NOT a “Republican versus Democrat” or “conservative versus liberal” debate. This is aRule of Law versus a rule of men issue, the terminus of the latter irrevocably being tyranny.
Our Founders and Constitution prescribed that the specific role of Supreme Court justices was, and remains, to uphold Rule of Law in accordance with their oaths “to Support and Defend” our Constitution. Otherwise they would become, as Jefferson warned, a “despotic branch” whose jurists legislate by judicial diktat, as has been the case with statist Supreme Court jurists for the last 70 years.
Perhaps through the din of liberal rants, some of our young countrymen will gain some much-needed civic insights into Liberty and Rule of Law. And one of the most highly acclaimed tools for those insights is our pocket guide to Essential Liberty.
As noted last week, I’ll be devoting much-needed time in the coming weeks to a thorough revision of our Essential Liberty Guide — just in time for the Reagan revival now underway.
Production of the Essential Liberty guides is not in The Patriot’s budget, rather it’s a project of our non-profit arm, the Patriot Foundation Trust. With your generous support, we’ve been distributing these highly acclaimed booklets for years at no charge to students and other citizen groups who will be force-multipliers to sustain and defend Liberty in the future.
Will you please help us fund the next printing of Essential Liberty and extend Liberty to the next generation? The cost to produce 250,000 of these guides is approximately $57,600.

TALKING POINTS MEMO Is the Democratic Party in Serious Trouble?

Is the Democratic Party in Serious Trouble?
By: Bill O'ReillyFebruary 1, 2017
First of all, we need two vibrant parties in this country. Robust debate and different points of view strengthen the nation.
But a big change is taking place. The term 'loyal opposition' in politics is now devolving into just 'opposition.' The 'loyal' has left the building.
In President Trump's case, no matter what he does, there are some Democrats who will oppose him and that is harmful to America.
Also, there is deception.
Last night, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi held a town hall.
The subject of illegal alien violence was raised.
LAURA WILKERSON: "In 2010, one of the illegals slaughtered my son. He tortured him, he beat him, he tied him up like an animal. And he set him on fire. And I am not a one-story mother. This happens every day. (choking up) Because there are no laws enforcing the border."
((EDIT))
NANCY PELOSI: "There is nothing, I'm sure that can compare to the grief that you have. And so I pray for you. ((EDIT)) But I do want to say to you, that in our sanctuary cities, our people are not disobeying the law."
That is flat out untrue. A deceit that is outrageous.
Congresswoman Pelosi well knows that in San Francisco, her hometown, an illegal alien deported five times is charged with murdering 32-year-old Kate Steinle.
That man, 54-year-old Juan Francisco Lopez Sanchez, will be put on trial soon but the verdict on San Francisco is guilty of failing to hold Sanchez even though the feds asked for him to be detained.
Somebody tell Nancy Pelosi.
All over the country, Americans are outraged that a beautiful woman like Kate Steinle was gunned down by a foreign felon who had illegally crossed into this country six times.
Yet Mrs. Pelosi has the gall to say that in the sanctuary city of San Francisco, our people are not disobeying the law.
Again, that is a bold lie.
If one of the most high profile leaders of the Democratic Party is that arrogant, that dishonest, what does this say about the party in general?
And Mrs. Pelosi did not stop there, continuing to criticize our economic system.
NANCY PELOSI: "We're capitalist. That's just the way it is. However, we do think that capitalism is not necessarily meeting the needs with the income inequality that we have in our country."
So Americans who are not ideological hear this kind of stuff - that sanctuary cities are acceptable and capitalism is not quote "meeting the needs of our people" - and they turn away.
But the Democratic leadership does not seem to understand that.
In fact Senator Tim Kaine, who ran with Hillary Clinton and was not a factor in the vote, pretty much disappearing during the campaign, is proud of his party's rebellious stance.
SEN. TIM KAINE (D-VA): "What we've got to do is fight in Congress, fight in the courts, fight in the streets, fight online, fight at the ballot box, and now there's the momentum to be able to do this. And we're not afraid of the popular outcry, we're energized by it and that's going to help us do our job and do it better."
Senator Kaine says he's not afraid of the popular outcry. Well he should be.
Talking Points wants a strong Democratic Party as well as a vibrant Republican Party. That's the way our nation functions best.
But right now, there is political civil war that is actually harming the USA.
And until politicians stop the deceit and embrace policies that help all Americans, the war will continue.
And that's the memo.

PayPal “We Need Your Help Resolving An Issue With Your Account” Phishing Scam

PayPal “We Need Your Help Resolving An Issue With Your Account” Phishing Scam

Outline:
Email purporting to be from PayPal claims that your account has been temporarily limited because the company needs your help to resolve an issue with the account.

Brief Analysis:
The email is not from PayPal and your account has not been limited.  The message is a phishing scam designed to trick you into divulging your PayPal login details and other personal and financial information to Internet criminals.
Example:
Dear Customer,
We need your help resolving an issue with your account. Thus, we have temporarily limited what you can do with your account until the issue is resolved.
We understand it may be frustrating not to have full access to your account. We want to work with you to get your account back to normal as quickly as possible.
How can you help ?
It’s usually quite straight forward to take care of these things. Most of the time, we just need some more information about your account or latest transactions.Log In To My Account
PayPal Help Resolving an Issue Phishing Scam

Detailed Analysis:
According to this email, which purports to be from online payment service, PayPal, your account has been limited because the company needs your help to resolve an account issue. The email claims that you can help PayPal resolve the issue – and lift the imposed limitations – by clicking a “Log In To My Account” button.
However, the email is not from PayPal. Nor has your account been limited as claimed. The message is just one more fraudulent email in a continuing barrage of phishing scams that target PayPal users. Those who are taken in by the ruse and click the link as instructed will be taken to a bogus webpage made to look virtually identical to the genuine PayPal website. Once on the fake page, they will be prompted to log in with their username and password combination. After “logging in”, victims will be asked to provide detailed personal and financial information.
All the information submitted via the bogus login screen and via the fake “Account Update” form can be collected by the criminals running the scam and used to hijack your PayPal account as well as to commit credit card fraud and identity theft.
Because it conducts its business primarily online and communicates with customers extensively via email, PayPal has long been a primary target for phishing scammers. Be very cautious of any email purporting to be from PayPal that asks you to click a link or open an attachment to supply account information. Watch for fake links disguised as genuine PayPal addresses. And PayPal emails will never include attached forms.
Moreover, genuine PayPal emails will never use generic greetings such as “Dear Customer”. They will always greet you by your first and last name. PayPal hasprovided information on its website that helps people to recognise and report phishing scams.
