IDENTITY POLITICS HISTORY | Editor-in-Chief The foundation of the United States, while a monumental achievement, was not without its challenges. The country was born not as a nation, but as a contractual agreement among disparate rebel colonies facing a common enemy. This lack of a shared political history, spiritual unity, or agreement, and the absence of a shared Godly bond, posed significant difficulties in creating a stable government, defining citizenship, and establishing a national identity that shares the same passion to serve one God. Today, Americans continue to grapple with issues that stem from these foundational, seemingly complex ideologies. Major concerns include cultural challenges such as freedom of speech and the ability to agree on One Nation Under God, as well as societal issues like drug addiction, sexual identification, gun control, and widespread violence. Moreover, the ability of Republicans and Democrats to work together is seen as a miniature civil war, reflecting the ongoing struggle to maintain a shared sense of nationhood. Despite these challenges, to some degree, the United States has persevered and evolved, continually striving to uphold the ideals upon which it was founded. As we navigate these issues, it’s essential to remember that those who share in the ideals and commitment to that which our founding fathers established are what truly defines us as a nation. Today, Mark details the battle for America’s soul. We are in “a battle for the soul of this nation.”So declared the President of the United States in a recent speech from Independence Hall in Philadelphia. He is right. The question for you—the American people—to answer is: “Who is on the LORD’s side?” -- Exodus 32:26 To answer that question, we must first take a step back. We must reeducate ourselves about the founding of our great nation. What was America intended to be?What made it special? What about it was unique? What did it mean to be a government of “We the People”? What was the source of the liberties that made America such an exceptional nation—one unlike any that had preceded it in the history of humankind? There is no better way to answer those questions than to ask the Founders themselves. Indeed, their very words provide the answers. The words of the Founding Fathers demonstrate that, while imperfect, they were men of faith, men of God. They knew that our liberties came from God. They built our country on that fundamental premise. Their religious principles formed the very foundation on which our great nation—and the freedoms our Founders sought to secure—were erected. The Founders gave America a moral compass that guided it for more than two centuries. As George Washington, the Father of our Country, said, “Religion and morality are indispensable supports.” They are the “pillars of human happiness.” But, sadly, our Founders would no longer recognize America as the country they established. Indeed, they would be aghast and must be rolling over in their graves lamenting what we have done to the nation they bequeathed to us. Modern-day secularists are transforming America before our very eyes. We see it everywhere around us—in our schools, our government, our workplaces, and in our everyday life. They have launched America on a journey without a compass . . . without the moral compass our Founders deemed essential to its unique character, and to its very survival as a nation of liberty. Fundamental to the decaying moral fabric of our nation is the fact that it has strayed from our Founding Fathers’ core principles and beliefs, tenets that laid the foundation for the very thinking that gave rise to the birth of our nation and the freedoms that it guaranteed to us. America today has more problems than we can count. But it is our nation’s straying from those core precepts that—at its essence—threatens our continued freedoms. What were the core precepts of our Founding Fathers that modern-day society has lost? In a word . . . God. A fundamental and overriding belief in a Supreme Being, Who created and guides the universe, and from Whom all of our natural rights flow. A conviction that we derive our rights and liberties not from government, but from One greater than ourselves, and that our freedoms transcend government because they come from a Source higher than any government. America is at a crossroads. Do we wish to be a nation of liberty—under God—as our Founding Fathers intended? Or do we wish to be forever transformed into a secular bastion of God-less conformity? As you evaluate the question posed in the Book of Exodus, study what our Founding Fathers actually said. Demand the truth, as revealed in their own words. And remember this verse as well: “Do not be deceived.” — Galatians 6:7 Deceit comes in many forms. Sometimes, it is accomplished by projection—attributing to others what one is himself doing. It is for you to decide who is deceiving, who is projecting, and who is actually “on the LORD’s side.” Let us together implore all who share the Founding Fathers’ reverence in God to join together, to speak with a loud and unified voice, to insist upon a return to virtue and good moral order, to declare their fervent belief and faith in God Almighty, to stand up to the forces—including our own government when necessary—that threaten the foundational premise of our Founders that our rights come from God—not government—and that our government’s authority over us must therefore be sufficiently limited that our freedoms will remain protected. This is not a partisan issue. Indeed, it should be a unifying one.My hope is that the American people will rise above partisan politics to demand of all political parties, governmental and societal institutions of all sorts, and of themselves, a return to the foundational principles of our Founding Fathers, including, most especially, a humble recognition of the Supremacy of an Almighty God from whom our rights as human beings, and as citizens of the United States of America, flow. Only by doing so can we restore the moral fabric of our nation, return government to the limited role that our Founders intended, and secure for our children and grandchildren the liberties for which America was built. * Portions of this essay are derived from the Introduction to Volume 3 of Judge Boonstra’s 3-volume work: In Their Own Words: Today’s God-less America . . .
