Happy Shavuot - Chag Shavuot Sameach!

Sivan 5, 5784/June 11, 2024

Today is Forty Nine Days of the Omer

Chag Shavuot - the festival of Shavuot (Weeks), also known as the Festival of the Firstfruits (Bikurim), and also known as the festival of Matan Torah (receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai), has arrived! We have been anticipating it ever since we began counting the Omer on the second day of Passover, working each day to become a better person than we were the day before and getting ourselves fit and ready for receiving the Torah, just as our ancestors did on this very day, four thousand years ago.

Four thousand years old yet, nevertheless, as new as the day it was given, the Torah is the firstfruits of Israel's eternal bond with HaShem.

The firstfruit offerings are made from the seven special species of Israel mentioned in Torah: Wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates. The Mishna describes how the firstfruits were chosen:

“A man goes into his field and sees the first ripe fig or the first ripe cluster of grapes or the first pomegranate to ripen. He ties that fruit with a reed and says, 'These are Bikkurim'” (Bikkurim 3:1) If we can devote so much love and attention and importance to a newly ripening fruit, and appreciate that it is an outright gift from G-d, we can surely see and appreciate and love one another as a gift from G-d, and this is the true meaning of receiving Torah.

The Temple Institute wishes all our friends and followers, and devoted supporters, amd all who seek HaShem in their lives, the entire people of Israel, and all who love the people of Israel and the G-d of Israel, a very happy Shavuot - Chag Shavuot Sameach!

Shavuot In The Holy Temple! The one-day pilgrimage festival of Shavuot celebrates the wheat harvest with the bringing of the newly harvested wheat crop to the Holy Temple, where it was prepared and used in the baking of the two special Shavuot loaves. Likewise, pilgrims brought the firstfruits from their own fields and orchards, of the seven fruits of the land of Israel mentioned in Deuteronomy: Figs, grapes, dates, pomegranates, olives, wheat and barley. Despite being at the height of the growing season, when the physical demands upon farmers was great, the pilgrims joyfully gathered their firstfruit offerings, and set out for Jerusalem and the Holy Temple.

Learn how Shavuot was celebrated in the Holy Temple!
