Venezuela’s Socialist President Nicolas Maduro urged migrants abroad to “stop cleaning toilets” and return to his troubled country this week; saying the refugees only fled because they were tricked by foreign governments into thinking “it was finished here.”
Maduro addressed lawmakers during a televised appearance Wednesday; urging Venezuelans who have fled the escalating crisis to return and help rebuild the troubled nation.
“It can’t be that some Venezuelans left the country to clean toilets overseas, they should come home. I’m saying this even if it hurts to leave the country to become economic slaves abroad,” said Maduro.
An estimated 1.6 million people have fled the country since the economic collapse of 2015.
