He's Still Good, Even Now - Your Nightly Prayer - July 25th
He’s Still Good, Even Now
by Amber Ginter
TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE
“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” - Psalm 107:1, NIV
SOMETHING TO PONDER
Growing up, I struggled to understand how God was still good when my circumstances were not. After surviving countless rounds of verbal and emotional abuse, I felt like a broken rag doll. Tears streaked my floorboards and the hollow spaces of my soul. Maybe you can relate?
I used to read verses like Psalm 107 and 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 and shudder. How could a good God allow suffering and command that we praise Him? Until I realized three things:
1. We live in a fallen world. This place is not our home.
2. God is good despite this fallen world.
3. We praise God in all circumstances, not for them.
Look at 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 this way: "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus" (NIV). Did you catch it? God is still good in even now moments because we praise Him for who He is, not what we experience. This revelation changed everything for me. I stopped trying to find lessons in my suffering and realized that God can work all things for my good, not because hardships are good, but God alone is. And isn't that a gift to serve a God that can use broken places to make something beautiful?
Psalm 107 tells us to give thanks to the Lord because He is good and His love endures forever. That is a fact. God is good, and His love can't compare to anything here on Earth. But the beauty of this statement is what's implied. God is good on the good days and the bad ones. And every day, He is still worthy of praise. Because in the end, He will right every wrong, and every tear will be wiped away (Revelation 21:4).
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Dear God,
Even on the hard days, remind us that you are still good. What we go through may not be good, but please help us to grow through those painful places. Remind us that where the rain is in abundance, flowers will later grow. Help us to be honest with you about our suffering, and comfort us even here. We love, praise, and thank you, Jesus.
Amen.
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
1. Take time to journal one of your most painful memories. Let the tears flow, and ask God to sit with you in your emotions. He desires to hear from you.
2. Do you struggle to separate God's goodness from life's circumstances? Meditate on Psalm 107 and doodle your takeaways.
3. How can you encourage someone who is going through a difficult time? Take time to serve someone in need.
