Parts of South Sudan are experiencing extreme hunger. Read about one organization’s mission to change that.
Food is one of life’s necessities, but when there’s enough of it to go around, it can seem more like a commodity. That’s because many of us have never experienced what it’s like to go hungry. Earlier this year, the United Nations and the South Sudan government declared famine in two counties in South Sudan, as the country was gripped by an unprecedented and rapidly-growing food crisis. After a swift humanitarian response, a recent report declared South Sudan free of famine — but that doesn’t mean the hunger crisis is over. 2 million still remain threatened by starvation, a number that could soon rise to 6 million. As a result of a years-long civil war, skyrocketing inflation rates, massive debt, and rising food prices, the country has spiraled into a critical state of emergency. And the citizens can’t reverse it alone.
In one of the country’s hardest hit areas, Northern Bahr el Ghazal, 59% of the population is experiencing dire food shortages. That has led to and continues to prompt related problems that threaten the prosperity of this vulnerable country. Food shortages have resulted in rampant malnutrition, and those most at risk include an estimated quarter of a million children who will face severe acute malnutrition, the most dangerous and life-threatening form of hunger. With violence and displacement forcing some the country’s few health facilities to close, those in need of medical attention are forced to find the remaining clinics, which are not properly equipped with basic medicine and staff.
Without immediate help and response, the country of South Sudan will plunge further into disaster and families will continue to suffer and die from hunger. Kaepernick’s collusion case targets NFL owners, including Giants

Some of the NFL’s most powerful owners will be at the center of Colin Kaepernick’s collusion case.
The Cowboys’ Jerry Jones, the Patriots’ Robert Kraft and the Texans’ Bob McNair will be deposed and asked to turn over all cellphone records and emails in relation to Kaepernick’s accusation, ESPN.com reported. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and 49ers owner Jed York is also on the deposition list, according to Yahoo Sports.
Giants owners John Mara and Steve Tisch are also on the discovery list, according to Yahoo Sports.
The 49ers quarterback-turned-NFL martyr is charging that NFL teams, in “calculated coordination” with President Trump, blackballed him from the league after he became the face of the NFL anthem protests, which he started to fight against racial inequality.
Kaepernick opted out of his 49ers contract this offseason and has yet to get significant interest from teams, despite being more talented and having a better track record than a handful of the starters in the league, let along the backups.
Each of the owners in the report has unique ties to the controversy.
Kraft is a longtime ally of Trump’s and gave the president a Super Bowl ring after last season’s triumph.
Jones knelt with Cowboys players before the anthem in Week 3 after Trump implored owners to cut any “son of a b—h” who takes a knee. But later, Jones said if his players did not stand for the anthem, they would not play in the game.
McNair became the enemy of his own Texans players when he commented at a recent owners’ meeting that the league can’t have “inmates running the prison.” Players considered boycotting, then decided to take a knee, before their loss to the Seahawks.
