I had four sons. Even before I was a Catholic, all of my sons were well-behaved and respected me with a love not commonly seen. I seldom had to punish them, as they were eager to please me. However, my oldest son got it into his head that he simply wasn't going to obey me on one particular matter. I spanked him repeatedly for this chronic act of disobedience. It got to the point that I knew I'd lose my son to his own will if I didn't break this streak of disobedience, so I decided to get creative.

The next time the boy repeated his disobedience, I sent him for the paddle. In times past, my son would move slowly to retrieve the paddle, putting off as long as he could the coming spanking. This time, though, he walked quickly to get the paddle, then returned purposefully, and handed the paddle over with an attitude of impudence.

Saddened by my son's attitude, I told him that I'd have to give a paddling more severe than I'd ever given before. I told him to turn around and take what was coming to him. He defiantly turned, then bent over to hold his ankles while he awaited the spanking. He heard the swoosh of the first blow headed toward his bottom, followed by the smack of the contact. He jerked and shuddered. Then came the second smack, and my son shuddered a little less. By the third smack, he realized he wasn't being struck at all.

On about the sixth smack, my son looked around to see me bring down the paddle again — on my own leg. I'd been hitting myself so hard that blood was seeping through my trousers. My boy stood upright and wrapped himself around my leg, sobbing almost hysterically while begging me to stop. He began to shout through his tears, "I'm sorry, Daddy! I won't do it again! Please stop! I'm sorry!"

I stopped and knelt down to hold my repentant son. As the boy's sobs lapsed into shaky intakes of breath, I said, "Son, I need you to understand that when you do something wrong, there has to be a price paid. Your disobedience was so bad that it merited extreme punishment, but I couldn't bring myself to give you what you deserved. So I took the punishment you deserved in your place."

God is the Father of us all. Jesus is His Son, but He is also the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. Original sin offended an infinite being, so it deserved an infinite punishment; this is why God created Hell. All of our personal sins offend the infinite being, God, and deserve infinite punishment. But being the all-merciful Father that He is, God chose instead to take our punishment upon Himself by taking on a human body and nature, then going to the Cross to die. That was the bloody sacrifice Jesus took on for us.

A sacrifice is the offering of a victim by a priest to God. The Mass and Jesus' sacrifice on Calvary are one and the same because in the Mass Jesus makes Himself present on the altar so that we can celebrate the memory of the Cross, as well as apply its saving power for the forgiveness of our sins.

The Church teaches that "the sacrificial character of the Eucharist is manifested in the very words of institution: 'This is My Body which is given for you' and 'this cup which is poured out for you in the New Covenant in My Blood.' In the Eucharist, Christ gives us the very Body He gave up for us on the Cross" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, §1365).

Consecration at Mass

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is at one and the same time the sacrifice of the Cross made present on our altars; a memorial of Christ's death, Resurrection and ascension; and a sacred banquet at which we receive Him in Holy Communion. In both the sacrifice of the Mass and the sacrifice of the Cross, the victim is Jesus Christ. He acted as the High Priest, offering Himself to the Father from the Cross. He continues to act as High Priest of the same sacrifice in the Mass, but does so now through the ministry of His priests.

The difference between the sacrifice of the Cross and the sacrifice of the Mass is in the manner of presentation. The Council of Trent proclaimed that Christ, who "offered Himself once in a bloody manner on the altar of the Cross," is offered "in an unbloody manner" on the altar of the sacrifice of the Mass. On the Cross, Jesus offered Himself to the Father when He "yielded up His spirit" (Matthew 27:50). In the Mass, Jesus offers Himself to the Father in the consecration. The double consecration of the bread and wine represents the mystical separation of His Body and Blood. When one's body and blood are separated, death results. Reception of the Holy Eucharist is our participation in Christ's redemptive sacrifice on the Cross.

Mic'd Up Report: The Most Blessed Sacrament

The sacrifice of the Mass and the sacrifice of the Cross are directed to the same end. They both give glory, praise and worship to the Father. They both provide expiation and reparation for our sins and the sins of all mankind. They both appeal to God for the natural and supernatural favors we need, particularly those which help us to become holy.

The sacrifice of the Mass and the sacrifice of the Cross are directed to the same end.GabTweet

Next week, we'll look at the mechanics of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Then we'll begin looking at Holy Communion. After we finish with Holy Communion, we'll take a look at how to give proper respect to Jesus in the Holy Eucharist and how so many people grieve Him today by taking Him for granted and showing Him so little respect.

Historically, U.S. Supreme Court decisions have had little impact on national elections. America, however, has become increasingly polarized in the last decade. Church Militant's Trey Blanton opens the history books and charts the progress towards an anticipated explosive 2022.

The U.S. Supreme Court began hearing arguments Wednesday in the landmark Mississippi abortion case Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. But the high court won't release its decision until June, in the midst of the campaign season.

Lauren Enriquez, media strategist, Students for Life of America: "The Supreme Court ruling on the Dobbs case is likely to bode well for Republicans simply because they are more in line with public opinion and popular opinion when it comes to the issue of abortion."

The high court's presumptive impact on election cycles represents a massive shift from historical precedent. The American Bar Association charts landmark cases. But each of these produced no major shifts in the following election cycle, with one exception.

In 1954, Republicans controlled the White House and both chambers of Congress, a feat not duplicated until 2003 under the second George Bush.

In '54, the Warren Court held that, per the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, schools could not be racially segregated.

This was not acceptable to the then–Democrat-controlled South and, combined with Republican senator Joseph McCarthy's aggressive hunt for communists, factored into Congress flipping from red to blue.

However, in Roe v. Wade, the foundational high court abortion case, the justices permitted the nationwide murder of the preborn, and nothing changed in the next election cycle. But in 2016, 65% of the electorate considered Supreme Court appointees an important factor in their decisions.

Enriquez: "President Trump put pro-life justices on the Supreme Court. That is having a trickle-down effect, and I believe that that will have an effect on the election, allowing Republicans to further champion life."

Furthermore, Democrat threats to either pack the court or codify Roe at the federal level will be met with electoral consequences.

Enriquez: "These are all ways to work around the existing rules, because Democrats are realizing their ideas are so unpopular, especially when it comes to abortion, that they can't win playing by those rules."

The Supreme Court decision will reverberate through the midterms and beyond.

Conservatives and liberals alike increasingly consider abortion an important issue, with almost half the members of each faction viewing abortion as critical in their decision to vote.

A common defense by pro-abort media is that a hefty majority of Americans do not want to see the court rulings that legalized infanticide overturned. Church Militant's Joseph Enders has more on the media's biased, pro-death coverage.

For nearly 50 years, media coverage about abortion has been almost exclusively skewed to support the continuing slaughter of the unborn, and it's misleading the public. Following the Texas pro-life "heartbeat bill" signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott in May, lapdog media has even ramped up this deceptive language.

NBC: "There's been nearly two weeks since the highly restrictive abortion law took effect."

CNN: "A seismic shift on abortion rights."

ABC: "A controversial Texas law that would ban most abortions."

"Controversial," "abortion rights," "highly restrictive" — mainstream media won't use words like "life-saving," "pro-life" or "protective" to describe the Texas law and others like it. In fact, the Associated Press even set pro-abortion style standards to push the Culture of Death agenda. It requires writers to "use 'anti-abortion' instead of 'pro-life,' and 'pro-abortion rights' instead of 'pro-abortion' or 'pro-choice.'" This language helps drive the narrative, and it's working.

A November ABC News/Washington Post poll found 60% of Americans say Roe v. Wade should be upheld; only 27% believe it should be overturned. The numbers are even more dire for U.S. Catholics: In 2019, Pew Research found 68% said Roe should not be overturned, while only 28% said it should be overturned.

And when Republicans make strong statements against abortion, corporate media is nowhere to be found. One exception is former vice president Mike Pence, who, on Monday, drew some media buzz with his statements against Roe v. Wade.

Mike Pence: "I came here today to speak about right and wrong. To say life is a human right and urge the Supreme Court of the United States to choose life."

But will his words fall on deaf ears? The U.S. bishops' conference is remaining silent as the most important abortion case since Roe v. Wade is being debated in the Supreme Court today. Meanwhile, the media is showing no sign of letting up on its pro-abortion, pro-death coverage. The USCCB has never held a single national collection for any pro-life effort ever.

One-hundred-sixty years ago, the United States went to war over whether individual states had the right to legalize slavery. In a historic irony, Mississippi, one of the states that supported slavery, is battling for the rights of the unborn. Church Militant's Kristine Christlieb provides background to this fight for life.

Attorney General Lynn Fitch: "Couldn't be any more excited than the day that it came down and said that we're taking the Mississippi — the Dobbs case is moving forward. I always say, this will no longer be the Roe v. Wade; it will be the Dobbs Mississippi case that will be taught."

Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch is eager to find out if her state will be the one to finally overturn Roe v. Wade.

In 2018, Mississippi lawmakers passed and Gov. Phil Bryant signed into law House Bill 1510.

The only abortion provider in the state, Jackson Women's Health Organization, a Planned Parenthood facility, immediately challenged the new law in federal court.

Invoking legal principles from both Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, the lower court ruled in favor of Planned Parenthood and blocked enforcement of Mississippi's abortion ban.

The state took the ruling to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, which upheld the lower court ruling.

Continuing Mississippi's fight, Thomas E. Dobbs, the state's chief health officer, is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the lower court.

Reporter: "The Supreme Court has now agreed to take up a Mississippi case on limiting abortion rights."

Fitch believes both Roe and Casey have left the country in chaos.

Fitch: "Those cases just really confused things; they made the conflict much worse."

Given medical advances, the state's brief argues the prior century's decisions are "decades out of date."

Prudence Robertson, Susan B. Anthony List: "Fifty years of advances in science and technology show us that these babies in the womb have beating hearts at six weeks. ... They have fingers and toes. They cough. They hiccup."

There are 26 states ready to assert their right to regulate abortion if Roe is overturned.

One of those states is Missouri. Its Republican attorney general, Eric Schmitt — who is Catholic and running for U.S. Senate — told Church Militant the following:

Since taking office, I've always fought to protect the unborn, and that fight continues. As we argue in our amicus brief in support of Mississippi's law, it is time for the Supreme Court to overrule Roe v. Wade and Casey. While we're fighting in court to defend Missouri's pro-life laws, I'm proud to support Mississippi's similar legal battle in front of the Supreme Court.

Americans have been on a death watch for the last 50 years, watching as millions of children have been denied the right to life and watching for an end to an evil Supreme Court decision.

Texas Right to Life filed a "friend of the court" brief in support of Mississippi. It notes that some of the principles argued in Dobbs v. Jackson could be applied to the court's decisions in Lawrence v. Texas, which struck down a Texas law prohibiting gay sex, and also Obergefell v. Hodges, which guaranteed the right to same-sex "marriage." The brief calls these decisions "as lawless as Roe."
