HELSINKI, Finland (ChurchMilitant.com) - In a major victory for free speech, the Helsinki district court has cleared a Finnish lawmaker three years after she was charged with "hate speech" crimes for tweeting biblical verses proscribing homosexual acts.

"It is not for the district court to interpret biblical concepts," the court concluded in a unanimous ruling Wednesday, ordering the prosecution to pay over 60,000 euros in legal costs to the defendants and 496 euros in costs to the Luther Foundation of Finland.

Evangelical Lutheran and medical doctor Dr. Päivi Räsänen was charged with three counts of "incitement" against homosexuals, including tweeting a quote from St. Paul's letter to the Romans in response to the Helsinki LGBTQ+ Pride March in June 2019.

In Romans 1:24–27, the apostle Paul describes men and women exchanging "natural relations for those that are contrary to nature" and "receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error."

"Although the tweet may have offended the participants in the Pride event, it has not claimed that the participants in the event, for example, are inferior to others," the court ruled. Räsänen's tweet criticized the Lutheran Church for co-sponsoring the Pride parade.

The high-profile trial received international attention, particularly after the prosecutor general Ms. Raija Toiviainen attacked core Christian teachings and cross-examined Räsänen on her theology in court.

Attacking the phrase "love the sinner; hate the sin," Toiviainen quoted Old Testament Bible verses, alleging that the use of the word "sin" can be "harmful." The prosecution also argued that Räsänen's claim on radio that "God did not originally create man as a homosexual but as a heterosexual," was offensive.

The court, however, ruled that Räsänen did not exceed the limits of free speech or insult homosexuals as a group based on sexual orientation and that her words were not capable of arousing contempt, intolerance or hatred towards homosexuals; nor were they intended to degrade or insult.

"The ruling was what I expected. Not for a second did I believe that I had committed anything illegal in my writings and statements," Räsänen told Church Militant in a statement. "I have been criminally charged for voicing my deeply held beliefs that are based on classical Christianity."

The lawmaker emphasized the historic nature of the judgment, explaining that "the court has had to, for the first time, take a stand on whether it is legal or not to cite the Bible."

"I have felt joy about being able to speak about the gospel and the atonement of Jesus during these couple of years," she added, telling the press that she wouldn't hesitate to cite scriptural texts on homosexuality in the same way she had previously.

"What has worried me is that this process, which has lasted almost three years, has tended to narrow religious freedom and cause self-censorship," she lamented.

The prosecutor has warned she will appeal against the ruling, but Räsänen told media she is "prepared to defend freedom of speech and religion in all courts, even before the European Court of Human Rights."

"One may disagree with Christian teaching. Some may even find it shocking. However, a criminal prosecution of high-profile Christians for sharing their beliefs shows that Europe's hate-speech laws have become a serious problem," barrister Lorcán Price, legal counsel for the Alliance Defending Freedom International, commented

"And this is impacting people whose views were once acceptable but are now deemed to be potentially 'hateful,'" Price, a member of the team defending Räsänen, lamented.

The lawmaker was also charged with "hate speech" for comments on a talk show on the Finnish Broadcasting System in December 2019. The show was titled "What Would Jesus Think About Homosexuals?"

The prosecutor general's third charge involved a booklet written by the doctor in 2004 titled: Male and Female He Created Them — Homosexual Relationships Challenge the Christian Concept of Humanity.

The three charges against the lawmaker carry a total prison sentence of six years.

Charges were also dropped against the booklet's editor-in-chief, Rev. Dr. Juhana Pohjola, dean of the Evangelical Lutheran Mission diocese of Finland, who authorized the publication of the tract. Police interrogated Pohjola for five hours in February 2020.

Kerttu Tarjamo, secretary general for Finnish LGBT+ organization Seta, said it was important that "hate speech directed at LGBTIQA+ people" is dealt with in the legal system "even when it is displayed in a religious context or is motivated by religion."

"It is obvious that Räsänen's public opinions regarding gay people are deeply offensive to many persons belonging to sexual minorities," Tarjamo noted. "We hope that the matter will still be dealt with by the highest courts."

Räsänen has served as a Finnish member of Parliament since 1995. From 2004 to 2015, she was chair of the Christian Democrats; and from 2011 to 2015, she was the minister of the interior. During this time, she held responsibility for church affairs in Finland.

Ticked he wasn't made a cardinal, an apostolic nuncio exacted revenge on the United States in the 1970s. Nuncio from 1973 to 1980, Abp. Jean Jadot is reported to have said he would "inflict" Howard Hubbard on America by making him bishop.

In tonight's In-Depth Report, Church Militant's William Mahoney looks at Hubbard and his destructive legacy.

Jeff Anderson: "Howard Hubbard is a serial predator that enjoyed a position of power and trust over priests and parishioners for decades."

Attorney Jeff Anderson minced no words when speaking in August about Albany's retired ordinary, Bp. Howard Hubbard.

Anderson explained Hubbard operated exactly like disgraced homosexual pederast, now-defrocked ex-cardinal Theodore McCarrick.

New York State's Child Victims Act opened the door for an onslaught of lawsuits, which led four of New York State's eight dioceses to file for bankruptcy.

Bp. John Barres, diocese of Rockville Centre: "We believe that the process of Chapter 11 offers the only way to ensure a fair and equitable outcome for everyone involved."

In July, Anderson presented on the aftermath of the abuse suits for all New York's dioceses, including Albany, under Hubbard.

Jeff Anderson: "He's been named as an offender under the Child Victims Act in eight separate cases. We also know that he employed dangerously reckless practices while the bishop."

Albany was a predator's playground under Hubbard, who became bishop in 1977.

Bp. Howard Hubbard: "At the time that I was named in 1977, I was the youngest bishop in the country."

After nearly 40 years of reckless behavior, Hubbard retired in 2014 as the diocese's longest-reigning bishop.

In the wake of an abuse allegation against him in 2004, Bp. Hubbard spent tons of diocesan funds on a high-powered federal investigator, who happened to find him innocent.

Bp. Howard Hubbard: "If there is a credible allegation of even one incident of clergy sexual misconduct, then that person is automatically removed from ministry, permanently."

In 1995, an Albany priest, Fr. John Minkler, wrote to New York's metropolitan, Cdl. John O'Connor, about many reports regarding Hubbard's homosexual lifestyle.

Minkler included a deacon who lived at the cathedral with the bishop. That deacon reported Hubbard never offered public or private Mass unless scheduled, was extremely secretive and would go out dressed in cut-off shorts and tank tops only to return very late at night.

Father Minkler was found dead in his home in 2004. He had met with Bp. Hubbard just a few days before his sudden death. Though Fr. Minkler's death was ruled a suicide, many Catholics remain suspicious.

In 2015, homosexualist Jesuit James Martin tweeted a picture of himself with Hubbard. Martin wrote, "I saw another of my heroes last night at St. Patrick's: the great and kind emeritus bishop of Albany — Howard Hubbard."

Church Militant (a 501(c)4 corporation) is responsible for the content of this commentary.

Given the current 50–50 split in the U.S. Senate, every race in every state is crucial. In Pennsylvania, a CINO (Catholic in Name Only) Democrat is masquerading as a moderate.

But as Church Militant's Kristine Christlieb explains, the party mask has slipped. Congressman Conor Lamb's carefully cultivated "centrist" Democrat persona is taking a hit.

Rep. Conor Lamb, D-Pa.: "I'm Conor Lamb. I talk with Pennsylvanians every day who have come to believe our democracy is in crisis."

President Joe Biden: "Go out and make sure he [Lamb] wins!"

The fake Catholic was unmasked this week when it was revealed he's had a partnership with a radically progressive campaign firm. Lamb hired Fireside Campaigns, a majority-queer-owned progressive consulting firm advising a "who's who" list of far-left candidates and organizations, including Black Lives Matter.

It was the firm's illegal fundraising tactics for BLM that landed it, and Lamb, in the news.

Church Militant's political analyst Jim Ellis assesses the damage to Lamb's primary campaign against Lt. Gov. John Fetterman.

Jim Ellis, political analyst, Church Militant:

They're both from the Pittsburg area — Lamb and Fetterman — but the primary will be decided out of Philadelphia. That's going to favor Fetterman because a.) he's a statewide official and b.) he's perceived as being further to the left. Lamb plays that game that he looks like he's the moderate, but he's really not in terms of his voting, and so that association with that firm doesn't surprise me a bit.

Lamb's voting record is pause-worthy.

A Washington Free Beacon headline says it all: "'Moderate' Conor Lamb Votes with Far-Left Squad Almost 90 Percent of the Time."

Planned Parenthood Action Fund gives Lamb a 100% rating for supporting abortion. He's been endorsed by gun-control group Everytown for Gun Safety.

The only progressive issue he won't endorse is the Green New Deal. Coming out against fracking would be political suicide in his petro-rich district.

The Catholic vote could make or break Pennsylvania's Senate race. Calling out fake Catholics with their anti-Catholic policies is crucial.

To bring out the Democrat vote in Philadelphia, Lamb is waving Trump like a flag, reminding voters Trump has been to the state three times to campaign against him.

From Rome to Washington, D.C., a sex scandal is affecting Catholics in our nation's capital, where the cardinal appears to be protecting a predator. Church Militant's Senior Producer Christine Niles gives an update on one of her Spotlight investigations.

Fr. Adam Park: "Are we excited about God?"

Cover-up continues in Washington, D.C. Accused homosexual predator Fr. Adam Park is hiding out at Annunciation Catholic Church, a fact Church Militant confirmed this week with the parish.

Park resigned in disgrace in August from Rome's Pontifical North American College (the NAC), after allegations he groomed and sexually preyed upon younger seminarians.

Anthony Gorgia: "It's apparent that Fr. Park has been preying upon seminarians."

Former NAC seminarian Anthony Gorgia first exposed him in a multi-million-dollar lawsuit accusing the NAC of retaliating against him for blowing the whistle on Park's misconduct.

Since Park's return to D.C., Cdl. Wilton Gregory has remained mum on Park's status, refusing to answer queries from Church Militant.

An inside priestly source says he fears the cardinal is letting Park quietly ride out the storm before eventually reinstating him to priestly ministry.

It wouldn't be the first time Gregory has protected accused homopredators. His investigation of Msgr. Walter Rossi, rector of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, was considered a sham.

It's believed Gregory himself was handpicked for D.C. to cover up the misdeeds of his predecessor, Cdl. Donald Wuerl — who was chosen to cover up the misdeeds of his predecessor, Cdl. Theodore McCarrick.

And the beat goes on in Washington, D.C.

As to Anthony Gorgia, whose lawsuit was dismissed by the lower court, he continues his fight for justice, his case now pending before the appeals court.
