How Ludicrous Is Iran’s Call for a ‘Nuclear Free Zone in the Middle East’?

As supplies are running low and the weather turns bad in Nepal, the sense of urgency to rescue Israelis stranded as a result of the earthquake grows. Does the Israeli government have an obligation to rescue its citizens? Do Israelis have the right to demand, or even expect, this from their government?
At the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Conference being held at the UN this week, the Iranian foreign minister calls Israel’s alleged nuclear program “a serious and continuing threat to the security of neighboring and other states. ” At the same time, he is calling for a “nuclear free zone in the Middle East.” US Secretary of State John Kerry tells the same conference that the world is “closer than ever” to finalizing a deal that will ultimately allow Iran to possess nuclear weapons. Has the world gone mad?
US Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman told a gathering of American Reform Jews that the US “will be watching very closely to see what happens after a new [Israeli] government is formed on this issue of working towards” the two-state solution. Was this a threat? And with whom, exactly, should Israel be negotiating?
