Here Comes Oprah: ’60 Minutes’ Adds Obama’s Biggest Fan to New Sunday News Program

Well, that ought to really round out the political spectrum at CBS. (Sarcasm alert.)

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey has been announced as a new special contributor to60 Minutes on CBS, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and will begin work on the Sunday news magazine show this fall.
Winfrey, a reporter in her younger days, has spent the last 25 years hosting her own daytime programs and injecting her particular brand of liberal politics. Over the last eight years, when she wasn’t busy yo-yo dieting and pushing the latest weight loss programs, Winfrey put her celebrity weight, so to speak, behind the Obamas and praised every step they took.
In the video above, CNN interviewed Winfrey shortly after Barack Obama was announced as the president-elect and she had trouble keeping the drool in her mouth:
“It feels like hope won! … America did the right thing. It feels like there’s a shift in consciousness. It feels like something really big and bold has happened!!Like nothing ever in our lifetime!!! … It feels like anything is now possible.”
With that reaction, CBS is really getting a fair and balanced addition to its news program. At least, 60 Minutes executive producer Jeff Fager seems to think so:
“There is only one Oprah Winfrey. She has achieved excellence in everything she has touched. Her body of work is extraordinary, including thousands of interviews with people from all walks of life. She is a remarkable and talented woman with a level of integrity that sets her apart and makes her a perfect fit for 60 Minutes. I am thrilled that she will be bringing her unique and powerful voice to our broadcast.”
Yes, her voice and influence are very powerful but unique? Nah, she’s going to fit right in at the biased network. Besides, she makes her agenda clear in her comments for the new gig:
“I’ve been a big admirer of 60 Minutes since my days as a young reporter. I’m so excited and proud to join forces with this historic news program, which for me represents the bastion of journalistic storytelling. At a time when people are so divided, my intention is to bring relevant insight and perspective, to look at what separates us, and help facilitate real conversations between people from different backgrounds.”
Did anyone else laugh when she said CBS News is the “bastion of journalistic storytelling?” We thought so.
