Mel Gibson got one offer to change careers that Democrats are going to hate

Three Key Takeaways:
- A poll shows Mel Gibson as a leading Republican contender for California Governor, trailing only former Representative Katie Porter, though he has no current interest in running.
- Gibson has become a vocal critic of Governor Gavin Newsom, citing his handling of the Malibu wildfires and California’s high taxes, crime, and homelessness.
- Despite the poll results and speculation, Gibson has confirmed that he’s not pursuing a political career and prefers to remain a critic of California’s Democratic leadership.
Mel Gibson has done it all in the movie business.
He’s not afraid of shaking things up.
And Mel Gibson got one offer to change careers that Democrats are going to hate.
Poll finds Mel Gibson is the top Republican for California Governor
Outspoken actor Mel Gibson would be the leading Republican candidate for California Governor if he entered the race, according to a poll from The Lost Coast Outpost.
Gibson was at 12% in the poll, followed by Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco (R) at 11%.
Bianco is the only major Republican candidate to declare for the race so far.
Former Representative Katie Porter (D-CA) was in first place in the poll with 25%, with former Vice President Kamala Harris in second at 20%.
Kamala will reportedly make a decision this summer about running for Governor in the 2026 Midterm Elections.
California uses an all-party Primary with the top two candidates advancing to the general election.
Gibson lost his Malibu home in the Los Angeles wildfires and has become an outspoken critic of how Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass handled the situation.
“Governor Newsom and Karen Bass let us all down,” Gibson said at a press conference
The Braveheart actor noted that the sky-high taxes Californians pay were being wasted.
“Now for that kind of money, we deserve much more and much better, and there is absolutely no adequate excuse the Governor or Mayor can make for this gross mismanagement and failure to preemptively deal with what they knew was coming,” Gibson stated.
Gibson hammered Newsom for his catastrophic failure of leadership.
“Was it incompetence? Was it indifference, complacency, carelessness? Was it negligence? Absolutely,” Gibson declared. “Newsom . . . has brought us nothing but rampant crime, acute homelessness, horrendous inflation.”
The press conference that Gibson spoke at was hosted by Saving California – a group trying to recall Newsom – which added to the speculation he might be looking to run for office.
A run for Governor isn’t in the cards right now for Newsom
TMZ reported that a source close to Gibson said the Mad Max star was “flattered” by the results of the poll but he didn’t have any interest in running for office.
Gibson’s publicist, Alan Nierob, confirmed that a run for Governor wasn’t happening.
“He’s sticking with his day job for now,” Nierob told the California Globe.
Actors Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger parlayed their fame in Hollywood into becoming California Governor.
“It would have been really something for him to run, especially in this race,” pollster Guillermo Williams said. “But a lot of Californians have tired of celebrities running for office in recent years. Reagan was a union head, Schwarzenegger had a few Presidential appointments, and Gibson was named a special ambassador. So it’s not like they don’t have anything. But a lot of Californians also want anyone besides Porter or Harris.”
President Donald Trump named Gibson as one of his Special Ambassadors to Hollywood.
Mel Gibson is content to be one of Hollywood’s leading critics of Democrat rule in California.
