Gary Varvel: Democrat's scariest candidateEssay on salt and light plus a new Humor Me cartoon and an archive cartoon for paid subscribers
THE GRIM REAPERThe heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (Jeremiah 17:9) Democrat Jay Jones has a heart problem. And no, I don’t mean a medical one. The Virginia Democrat, now running for Attorney General, revealed the real condition of his heart back in 2022 when, as a state lawmaker, he texted a Republican colleague saying he hoped then–Speaker of the House of Delegates Todd Gilbert would die—along with his family. Let that sink in. A man who wants to be the state’s top law enforcement officer once wished death on a political opponent and his loved ones. You can read the details in this Matt Vespa column on Townhall. As of yesterday, Jones is refusing to drop out of the race. Apparently, he thinks voters will overlook a heart full of hatred. Jesus said, “For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander”(Matthew 15:19). By that standard, Jay Jones has a serious heart condition. But get this: The Federalist’s Brianna Lyman reports that Virginia Dems defend Jones’ assassination fantasies by asking: Who hasn’t wished murder on their enemies? And at least seven Dems signed a letter of support saying, “let those without sin cast the first stone.” Ah, the soft bigotry of low expectations. Townhall’s Amy Curtis wrote about Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares’ brutal ad which asks, “Do you trust Jay Jones to protect your children?” Good question. Can Virginians really trust a man who once wished death on people who simply disagreed with him? If character still matters, the answer should be obvious. PLEASE LIKE AND SHAREPersonal Note:Have you noticed the moral decay in our culture today? The world around us seems to be rotting from the inside out—truth is ignored, evil is celebrated, and hearts grow colder by the day. But Jesus gave us the cure for the rot when He said, “You are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13). Salt preserves and purifies. In the same way, Christ-followers are called to live as a preserving influence in a decaying world. When we live by God’s truth and speak it with love, the Holy Spirit uses our witness to reach hearts and bring about real change—one life at a time. Have you also noticed the growing darkness everywhere? Confusion, fear, and moral blindness seem to cover the earth. Yet Jesus also gave us the cure when He said, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). Darkness can’t stand where light shines. Our calling is to reflect the light of God’s Word and illuminate the way to the light of eternal life in Jesus Christ. Jesus said of Himself, “I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). That spiritual light doesn’t just expose darkness—it transforms it. It turns hearts of stone into hearts alive with God’s Spirit. This is how God changes the world—not through politics or power, but through people whose hearts have been changed by Him. So today, let your light shine. Let your words be seasoned with the salt of grace and truth. You never know whose heart God might reach through your life.
