SURFSIDE, Fla. (AP) — Demolition workers planned to bring down the remainder of a collapsed condo building on Sunday ahead of an approaching storm that added to worries that the damaged structure could come down on its own, officials said Saturday.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, meanwhile, said two more bodies were found in the rubble, bringing the number of confirmed dead to 24. The number of people who remain unaccounted for in the collapse was 124.

Worries have intensified over the past week that the damaged structure could come tumbling down on its own, endangering the crews below and complicating the search for victims.

Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Chief Raide Jadallah told family members during a morning briefing that the building would be brought down “as soon as possible. First thing tomorrow.”

But he cautioned that there “may be some hiccups.” A follow-up meeting will be held in the afternoon to finalize details of the demolition, which could be a precarious operation as experts enter the building to bore into the structure to install explosives.

Concerns that the still-standing portion could tumble have curtailed the search in areas close to that section, and shifts detected by monitors early Thursday prompted a 15-hour suspension of the entire search until engineers determined the site was safe to restart.

Jadallah said the remnants of the demolished building would be removed immediately after with the intent of giving rescuers access for the first time to parts of the garage area that is a focus of the search. Such access could give officials a clearer picture of the voids that might exist in the rubble and could possibly harbor survivors.

No one has been rescued since the first hours after the June 24 collapse. The approach of Tropical Storm Elsa from the Caribbean Sea also raises concerns that strong winds possible in South Florida by late Sunday or early Monday could further destabilize the standing portion of the towers.

The demolition of the building would temporarily suspend search operations, but officials hope not for long. Some families asked to be able to return to the building to retrieve personal belongings, but will not be allowed to do so.

Gov. Ron DeSantis, during a press briefing Saturday, underscored the necessity of bringing the structure down in a controlled manner ahead of the arrival of the storm.

"We have a building here in Surfside that is tottering, it is structurally unsound,” the governor said. “If the building is taken down this will protect our search and rescue teams.”

He also declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm's expected arrival early next week.

Warns of the so-called 'far-Right'

DETROIT (ChurchMilitant.com) - Facebook is cracking down on so-called far-right extremism — and the Biden administration is suspected of being behind it.

Cryptic alerts began showing up on social media accounts Thursday warning users they've come in contact with what it labels "extremist content." Moreover, additional warnings were generated urging users to report suspected extremists.

The first warning read as follows:

You may have been exposed to harmful extremist content recently. Violent groups try to manipulate your anger and disappointment. You can take action now to protect yourself and others. Get support from experts. Spot the signs, understand the dangers of extremism and hear from people who escaped violent groups.

A follow-up notice read: "Are you concerned that someone you know is becoming an extremist? We care about preventing extremism on Facebook. Others in your situation have received confidential support."

Under a "How You Can Help" heading, Facebook advised users to "hear stories and get advice from people who escaped violent extremist groups."

The timing of these alerts correlates with the Biden administration's National Strategy for Countering Domestic Terrorism, which was released June 15. The statement conceded the administration has been working with Big Tech:

The United States also recently joined the Christchurch Call to Action to Eliminate Terrorist and Violent Extremist Content Online, an international partnership between governments and technology companies that works to develop new multilateral solutions to eliminating terrorist content online while safeguarding the freedom of online expression.

The Christchurch Call to Action's mission contains a provision that "no one has the right to create and share terrorist and violent extremist content online."

Users who click on Facebook's "Get Support" link (found within the alerts) are sent to a group called Life After Hate. Its mission similarly targets so-called online extremism by "helping people leave the violent far-Right to connect with humanity and lead compassionate lives."

But this group openly admits to practicing a double standard. In May 2020, they brushed off left-wing extremism, opining, "It's been more than two decades since far-Right extremism overtook far-Left extremism as the most dangerous domestic terror threat to the U.S."

Not only do they ignore left-wing violence; they outright promote violent Marxist movements like Black Lives Matter.

Life After Hate also condemned, in June, Florida's Catholic governor, Ron DeSantis, for protecting female athletes — claiming his law banning biological men from competing in women's sports is discriminatory and that it will ultimately lead to the murder of so-called transgenders.

This group's program "ExitUSA" specifically targets conservatives who oppose increases in immigration, in addition to those with other "warning signs" that suggest the influence of "extremism." Folks may be flagged for extremism under ExitUSA guidelines if they:

  • Say allegedly "discriminatory things"
  • Show what is deemed "unusual amounts of anger or aggression"
  • Discuss or obsess over violence or so-called "conspiracy theories"
  • Spend unhealthy amounts of time online
  • Get tattoos of suspected "extremist symbols"
  • Share memes of what they refer to as "extremist symbols"

Amid this targeting, conservatives are creating their own platforms. Trump advisor Jason Miller unveiled his new social media platform GETTR on Thursday — inviting former president Donald Trump to join the site.

Critics, however, are skeptical of the site — noting that online streamer and conservative commentator Baked Alaska, a Catholic convert, was banned from GETTR immediately after making his account.

Many young conservative users have already made their choice of alternative social media, Gab.com — founded by Andrew Torba, a devout Christian and free-speech absolutist.

Conservatives on social media may have no choice but to abandon Silicon Valley platforms before they're silenced permanently.GabTweet

In January, Church Militant interviewed Torba, where he repeated his pledge to support right-wing opinions on his platform — explaining how his Faith influences him in running it.

And with the Biden administration teaming up with Big Tech and globalist organizations to push online reeducation campaigns that ignore left-wing terror, conservatives on social media may have no choice but to abandon Silicon Valley platforms before they're silenced permanently.

A Catholic health care system based in St. Louis announced it is requiring all employees to be vaccinated or face termination. Church Militant's Kristine Christlieb fields reactions from its employees.

SSM employee for 16 years: "I'm so disappointed in SSM. I chose this hospital because it was a Catholic institution."

The 23-hospital health care system, SSM Health, employs nearly 40,000 people in four states. The health care giant wants every single one of them to be vaccinated by Sept. 30.

SSM employee for 15 years: "I don't want to take the vaccine because I don't want to take an experimental drug."

It's a reversal of an earlier policy decision allowing employees to wait to be vaccinated until the experimental gene therapy had been FDA-approved.

SSM's Shephali Wulff: "If we don't get vaccinated, I'm not really sure how we can expect those around us in the community to trust these vaccines."

SSM employees are saying they shouldn't be forced to take the so-called vaccine.

SSM employee for 13 years: "I'm just not on board with the forcing of it. You know it's recommended — I understand recommending that people get it — but forcing it as a condition of employment, it's just not right."

SSM employee for 25 years: "They are just trusting, I guess that's the word, they're trusting that this is OK like everything else — or other vaccines."

Several employees have had the virus and say they are protected with naturally occurring antibodies.

SSM employee for 15 years: "You know if I have antibodies — I had COVID back in December — and if I have antibodies I don't know why I would need to be vaccinated."

But SSM is requiring that everyone take the jab regardless.

SSM's Shephali Wulff: "We know that the immunity [from a shot] is more reliable. We know that it's probably more durable than that of natural infection, and we know that it protects against variants, which, we don't know that to be true for natural infection."

The sudden policy reversal by Catholic SSM leaves employees feeling betrayed.

Employee: "The whole thing — this working for a Catholic organization — is caring for people, you know what I mean? And when you say to your employees, like, well, you know, 'you don't do this you're out of here,' isn't a very caring or Christian way of doing things."

Even though Pope Francis has given the vaccine his personal seal of approval, one Catholic nurse still feels that taking the vaccine isn't right.

The employees who spoke with Church Militant all had at least a decade of continuous employment with SSM. They never thought a Catholic hospital would force them to take a potentially dangerous experimental drug or have their livelihoods taken away.

Of the employees who spoke with Church Militant, none of them are certain they will take the vaccine, even when it has FDA approval.
