150 Members of Congress Slam Xavier Becerra for Ignoring Federal Law Banning Partial-Birth Abortions

National  |  Micaiah Bilger  |   Jul 2, 2021   |   9:49AM   |  Washington, DC

More than 150 Republicans in Congress demanded answers from HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra this week after he refused to acknowledge a law that bans brutal partial-birth abortions on late-term, pain-capable unborn babies.

In a letter provided to LifeNews.com, U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Washington, led lawmakers in asking Becerra to confirm that he will uphold and defend all U.S. laws, not just the ones that he likes.

“[Your] duty includes ensuring that existing legal protections for unborn children and conscience rights are properly enforced,” Rodgers wrote. “… although you have repeatedly committed to follow the law, you denied the existence of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003 and then deflected questions about whether you would enforce it.”

They asked Becerra, who leads the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to reiterate in writing his commitment to enforcing U.S. law as he promised to do at his confirmation hearing.

The letter was prompted by statements the HHS secretary made during a U.S. House hearing in May. Becerra denied multiple times that U.S. law bans partial-birth abortions and refused to commit to enforcing the pro-life law.

When U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Florida, asked Becerra if he agrees “that partial-birth abortion is illegal,” Becerra said he would follow the “very clearly settled precedent” of Roe v. Wade.

“… a woman has a right to make decisions about her reproductive health,” Becerra said, according to the Bee. He later claimed, “There is no law that deals specifically with the term partial-birth abortion.”

U.S. Rep. John Joyce, R-Pennsylvania, a medical doctor, also asked the HHS secretary about the partial-birth abortion ban.

“What I’m trying to explain is that the term partial-birth abortion may be recognized in politics and by politicians, but it is not a medically recognized term,” Becerra answered.

However, the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban clearly defines the gruesome act, which involves partially delivering a living unborn baby before killing it.

Fact checks by PolitiFact and The Sacramento Bee confirmed that Becerra’s denials were absolutely “false.” They also suggested that Becerra, a lawyer and former congressman, should know better because he personally voted against the law in 2003.

In their letter this week, the pro-life lawmakers expressed serious concerns about Becerra’s willingness to put his personal beliefs aside to do his job.

“Your refusal to, at first, acknowledge the existence of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, followed by your failure to commit to enforce it have cast doubt on your claims that you will follow the law,” they wrote.

They said Becerra’s personal beliefs about abortion do “not negate the existence of the law” and should not get in the way of the job that he promised to do as HHS secretary.

“Your responses have raised concern that, if you personally disagree with a law, you may choose to deny its existence,” the lawmakers wrote.

Rodgers, U.S. Reps. John Joyce, Dan Bishop, Gus Bilirakis, Dan Crenshaw and about 150 other lawmakers asked Becerra to assure the American people that he will enforce all laws, not just the ones he agrees with.

Becerra, a prosecutor and career politician, has no medical experience. His record includes trying to force pro-life pregnancy centers to advertise abortions and force nuns who serve the poor to pay for contraception, including forms that may cause abortions.

The U.S. Senate very narrowly confirmed him as HHS secretary in March.

The Partial-Birth Abortion Ban prohibits abortions “in which a physician deliberately and intentionally vaginally delivers a living, unborn child’s body until either the entire baby’s head is outside the body of the mother, or any part of the baby’s trunk past the navel is outside the body of the mother and only the head remains inside the womb, for the purpose of performing an overt act (usually the puncturing of the back of the child’s skull and removing the baby’s brains) that the person knows will kill the partially delivered infant.”

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the law in Gonzales v. Carhart.

The ex-wife of Amazon.com billionaire Jeff Bezos is joining the elitist tradition of donating money to groups that promote abortion and fight against religious freedom for all.

The Catholic News Agency reports Mackenzie Scott, one of the richest women in the world, recently donated a “significant multimillion-dollar gift” to Faith in Public Life, a leftist advocacy group.

In a statement June 15, Faith in Public Life celebrated the donation as “transformational” and promised to use the money to build the “progressive faith movement” and “fight for racial equity.”

The group, which also receives donations from pro-abortion billionaire George Soros, advocates against pro-life and religious freedom efforts, including the Little Sisters of the Poor’s challenge to the pro-abortion Obamacare HHS mandate, according to CNA.

Recently, Faith in Public Life criticized the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ decision to draft a teaching document on the Eucharist that could rebuke pro-abortion politicians like President Joe Biden. Though he claims to be Catholic, Biden has been working to expand the killing of unborn babies in abortions by allowing dangerous abortion drugs to be sold through the mail and forcing taxpayers to pay for abortions.

“Tell bishops: Eucharist isn’t a weapon,” Faith in Public Life wrote on a petition it set up to oppose the bishops’ action.

Here’s more from the report:

The organization said that in recent years it has tripled its staff, quadrupled its annual budget, and established permanent offices in “several battleground states” in order “to fight Christian nationalism and the religious right.”

Scott is the third richest woman in the world, according to Forbes. Her donation falls in line with the agenda of many other American billionaires, including Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and George Soros. They also donate to groups pushing to expand the killing of unborn babies in abortions across the world.

Many of these billionaires appear to be donating to pro-abortion groups based on the advice of the Bridgespan Group, according to CNA.

“The group’s philanthropic clients include wealthy titans like Bill Gates, Michael Bloomberg, and the Ford and Rockefeller foundations, according to the New York Times. These foundations have been major donors to population control causes, abortion advocacy or both. The Ford and Rockefeller foundations have also funded the pro-abortion front group Catholics for Choice,” the report notes.

A 2020 investigation by Live Action News found that Bill Gates’ foundation donated nearly $68 million to DKT International, which sends abortion drugs and devices across the world. Gates currently is ranked the fourth richest man in the world by Forbes.

Warren Buffett, currently the ninth richest man in the world, donates to many of the same pro-abortion groups through his family foundation. According to Capital Research Center, the billionaire’s Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation donated $4 billion to abortion advocacy groups between 2000 and 2018. The largest recipients include Planned Parenthood, Marie Stopes International and the National Abortion Federation.

George Soros, Michael Bloomberg, the David and Lucille Packard Foundation (run by the heirs of one of the founders of Hewlett Packard), and others have given many millions more to pro-abortion groups.

So many babies, mothers and fathers could be saved from the pain and regret of abortion if only billionaires like Scott, Gates, Buffett and Soros chose to use their money to help people instead.

13,709 Babies Have Been Killed in Abortions Since Ireland Legalized Abortions

International  |  Right to Life UK  |   Jul 2, 2021   |   6:52PM   |  Dublin, Ireland

Figures released today by Ireland’s Department of Health reveal that 13,709 abortions have taken place in the Republic of Ireland since the country’s new abortion law was introduced on 1 January 2019.

In May 2018 a referendum on whether to repeal the Eighth Amendment – the amendment to the Irish constitution passed in 1983 that explicitly guaranteed the right to life of the unborn – took place. The “Yes” campaign received 66.40% of the vote, and 33.60% voted “No” to repealing the amendment.

Following the referendum, the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act entered Irish law on 20 December 2018 and abortion services commenced on 1 January 2019.

A total of 6,577 abortions were carried out in Ireland in 2020, according to official figures.

Official figures from the UK’s Department of Health and Social Care show an additional 194 abortions took place in England and Wales in 2020 where a Republic of Ireland address was provided. Meanwhile, 36 of the abortions that took place in Ireland in 2020 were for women from Northern Ireland, taking the number of abortions for Irish-resident women in England, Wales and the Republic of Ireland to 6,735.

Before new abortion legislation was introduced to Ireland, the number of abortions that took place in England and Wales for women who were Irish residents in 2018 was 2,879. A further 32 abortions were reported to have taken place in Ireland under the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act, taking the total number of abortions for Irish residents in 2018 to 2,911.

These figures show that the total number of abortions that have taken place for Irish-resident women in England, Wales and Ireland recorded in official statistics has increased from 2,911 in 2018 to 6,735 in 2020 – this represents an additional 3,824 abortions, an increase of 131%.

Commenting on today’s figures, Eilís Mulroy of the Pro Life Campaign said:

“Today’s abortion figures are devastating and are the opposite of what members of the Government repeatedly promised when they said abortions would be ‘rare’ if people voted for repeal”.

“In the space of only two years, everything that the pro-life movement warned would happen has sadly come to pass. In addition to the massive increase in abortions, we’ve seen from the recent study published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology that babies who survived late-term abortions under Ireland’s new law have been left to die without receiving any palliative or medical care. Voters were promised that nothing as horrifying and inhumane as this would ever happen. Likewise, we were told it was scaremongering to suggest misdiagnoses would occur in the detection of life-limiting conditions resulting in the deaths of unborn babies. Last week, we learned about the High Court settlement after baby Christopher Joseph Kiely was aborted following a misdiagnosis, leaving his parents bereft and devastated. How many other babies were aborted in similar circumstances under the new law?”

The campaign to expand abortion access in Ireland

A review of Ireland’s abortion legislation is currently being undertaken by the Department of Health, while abortion campaigners in Ireland are campaigning for abortion access to be even more expansive.

The ‘Termination for Medical Reasons’ group has stated that its “number one” request is the total decriminalisation of abortion for medical practitioners, who can face up to fourteen years in prison if found guilty of providing an abortion outside the provisions of the 2018 Act.

The ‘Abortion Rights Campaign’ is requesting that the ‘DIY’ at-home abortion service, permitted under lockdown regulations, be made permanent. They are also in favour of eliminating gestational limits enshrined in the current abortion law.

There are also ongoing calls to enforce censorship zones around medical premises where abortions are performed. In the wake of the referendum vote in 2018, Minister for Health Simon Harris pledged to legislate for “safe access zones”. However, this legislation is yet to be proposed and the Department of Health has said that “a number of legal issues were identified which necessitated further consideration”.

A spokesperson for Right To Life UK, Catherine Robinson, said: “Every single abortion represents a failure by society to protect the lives of babies in the womb and a failure to offer full support to women with unplanned pregnancies. Those who campaigned to repeal the eighth amendment claimed that this would not increase abortion figures in Ireland, but the figures show a very large increase. It is tragic that Ireland failed to protect the unborn, but also that campaigners are seeking to further radicalise regulations”.
