The San Diego Police Department told Fox News Digital that eight people are confirmed dead so far after two boats carrying a "group of immigrants" crashed off Black's Beach.
The police spokesman said San Diego Lifeguards is handling the incident as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
A tweet from a KNSD reporter, initially listing the death toll at 6, says Coast Guard, the San Diego Fire Department, and U.S. Customs and Border Patrol also responded.

A fire official described how thick fog hampered rescue efforts overnight. It's unclear how many people might have made it on shore.
"We couldn’t get any helicopters up. We had boats in the water, but at first light, once all the conditions clear, we will have Coast Guard out here and San Diego Fire-Rescue and lifeguards doing a joint search through the water for any possible victims that are left," Daniel Eddy, San Diego Fire-Rescue’s deputy chief of operations, told OnScene TV.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported police first learned about the incident shortly after 11:30 p.m. Saturday when a woman called 911 to report she had come from Mexico by boat and that one of the boats had capsized. The caller said nine or 10 people might have been in the water after the other boat overturned.
The woman also reportedly told dispatchers eight people traveling on the boat she was on had made it to shore.
According to tourism website GoSanDiego.com, Black’s Beach is one of the largest nude beaches in the United States.

It's considered one of the most secluded beaches in San Diego, located below and just to the north of the Torrey Pines Gliderport. Beyond coming to play in the sun, sand, and surf in the nude on the state-run north end of the beach, tourists flock there to "surf the most dangerous swells in San Diego on the city-run south end of the beach," the website says.

Walgreens is one of the biggest drugstore chains in the country, but it decided to try and take both sides on a hot-button political issue in recent months.
Now it looks like this attempt could be a disaster for Walgreens.
And Californians are likely going to have to say goodbye to the drugstore chain forever thanks to Gavin Newsom’s latest decision. The fight over access to deadly chemical abortion medications is heating up.
And Walgreens tried to straddled the fence and instead upset both sides, especially the radical pro-abortion fanatics.
Recently, Walgreens announced they would be selling abortion pills to customers through the mail, even though the drug is rife with controversy.
The decision to sell the drugs drew the attention of 20 Republican Attorneys General, who sent a letter to the drugstore chain expressing their concerns about the selling of the abortion drug in states where it is illegal. In the letter, the Attorneys General from states like Georgia, Florida, Missouri, and others noted the dangers of chemical abortions and how they can cause serious health issues for women.
Since abortion pills are usually taken at home, they can leave women in danger without access to proper medical care or supervision.
Last week, Walgreens decided it would no longer distribute these drugs in approximately 21 states after the Republican officials threatened litigation.
So progressive pro-abortion California Governor Gavin Newsom has decided that he’ll end a $54 million contract with Walgreens which allows the company to produce “specialty pharmacy prescription drugs.”These “specialty” drugs were mostly used in California’s correctional facilities, but Newsom is not renewing the contract which is set to expire in May.
Of course, Newsom supports abortion for any reason, even after birth.
And he said that his state “will leverage our market power to defend the right to choose.”
He also accused Walgreens of caving to “extremists” while cutting off “critical access to reproductive care and freedom.”
Before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Newsom declared that California would be a “sanctuary state” for anyone seeking an abortion.
On Monday, Newsom tweeted, “California won’t be doing business with @walgreens – or any company that cowers to the extremists and puts women’s lives at risk. We’re done.”
As of the date of publication, Walgreens had declined to comment in response to the tweet.
Meanwhile, there is little doubt that many people in California depend on having access to the drugstore chain to get a variety of critical medications.
But since the state’s Governor has decided it will no longer do business with the company, it could leave some people in dire straits.
And Newsom seems to be ignoring the fact that Walgreens is still selling the abortion drug in places like California.
They only agreed to not sell it in states where it is illegal to do so, or there are strict restrictions on the drug.
Once again, Gavin Newsom shows his ignorance on this issue.
Newsom’s decision comes at a time when chemical abortion pills account for over half of all procedures in the United States.
In Texas, a judge is considering issuing a ban on a two-drug abortion regimen called Mifepristone.
Walgreens said they “intend to be a certified pharmacy and will distribute Mifepristone only in those jurisdictions where it is legal and operationally feasible.”
As it stands, California is now “reviewing all relationships between Walgreens and the state” according to Newsom spokesman Brandon Richards.
The Governor’s office also accused Walgreens of giving in to “right wing bullies.”
Perhaps if Walgreens hadn’t sold abortion pills in the first place, they wouldn’t be in this predicament today.
