Thoughts On Psalm 91:2

I will say to the Lord,
“You are my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.”

I don’t know about you, but for me this verse is quite significant. The Psalmist was saying, “I am going to tell the Lord that He is my refuge and fortress. I trust in Him! Whatever comes, I will turn to Him!”
First of all, he is making a personal declaration to everyone who will ever hear it or read it. He was making it personal.

He didn’t say, “Oh, I have heard some neat stories about this Jesus, guy.” No, he is saying, “I will personally say . . .” Now, to grab hold of a general truth and make it his very own and personal statement, is probably the highest form of wisdom! It doesn’t mean much to say, “I suppose the Lord is a refuge.” But for him to actually say, “He is my refuge, is a much stronger statement.
If you are going to believe something, you should be able to say that you believe. This is what will bring honor to Jesus and His Father! This is what will lead others to seek the same confidence. Now it is pretty common for someone to proclaim their doubts, and sometimes to even boast about them. But when a believer is able to speak out and testify with calm courage to their own well grounded reliance on their God, now that is significant!
However, here is something you need to consider. If you are going to make such a declaration, and announce your faith and confidence, you better be willing to prove it by your actions. When you face a significant (or even insignificant, I might add) event, are you going to whine and cry, or call the doctor or your analyst, or even you best friend . . . or will your first reaction be to fly to the Lord for shelter, comfort and wisdom? If you are going to be a disciple of Jesus, you should learn to lean on Him, and not on the arm of flesh, if you know what I mean.
Think about this a bit. When danger comes, a bird will immediately fly away to the thicket. When a hunter comes walking through the woods, a fox will immediately jump in its hole. A deer? They immediately run when they are startled, and they can run far! My point is that every creature uses its refuge in the hour of danger. How much more are we apt to run and fly? I realize that Peter said that we are not to run.

Keep your mind clear, and be alert. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion as he looks for someone to devour. Be firm in the faith and resist him, [see, Pete didn’t tell us to go run and hide] knowing that other believers throughout the world are going through the same kind of suffering (I Peter 5:8-9)

However, there are times when we are taken by surprise, or for other reasons may need to seek refuge. When that happens, as the Psalmist said,

“Flee to the Lord!”

He is the Eternal Protector of his own. When we are secure in the Lord, we can rejoice that our position is unquestioned, secure and strong. He is our fortress as well as our refuge. No moat, portcullis, drawbridge, wall, and battlement, could make us so secure as we are when the attributes of the Lord of Hosts surrounds us!
That’s right! Our ramparts defy the pestering hosts of hell. When the Lord of Hosts stands between us and their fiery darts will fall to the ground!
As if it were not enough to call the Lord his refuge and fortress, the Psalmist adds, “My God!” In Him I will trust! There is nothing more to say! “My God” tells it all, and more than all! There is no limit to the ability and power of our God! Paul declared, “What then shall we say to all this? If God is for us [and He is], who can be against us? Who can be our foe, if God is on our side?” (Romans 8:31).
Now, if you lived in an impregnable fortress, you would naturally trusts in it. You can also feel at ease, and lay back, in comfort knowing that you are living in safety?

Oh, if we could just embrace the psalmist’s resolve! We have already trusted in Yahweh for our Salvation. Let’s move on the trust Him for our life. He has never failed us, so why should we suspect him? To trust in man is natural to fallen nature, but to trust in God should be as natural as the air that we breathe. We have every reason and warrant for faith, so we should place our confidence without hesitation or wavering.
My friends, I have been rambling on and sometimes repeating myself, but please, pray for grace to say, “My God in whom I trust.”
