3-week miners’ strike dispersed by tear gas and water cannons in Chile

Published on Mar 1, 2017

The three-week strike by workers at the Escondida copper mine in northern Chile turned violent on Wednesday after protesters blocked a highway, prompting police to use tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesting miners. The blockade and resulting clashes brought traffic to a halt and cut off southern access to the Chilean city of Antofagasta. The strike began on February 9 in reaction to disagreements over the benefits worker receive as well as changes in shift patterns. Workers also accuse BHP Billiton of failing to deliver payments.
