When a simple beast of burden can see what the great heathen seer Bilaam cannot see, and when G-d opens the mouth of a dumb ass and shuts the mouth of the great heathen wordsmith Bilaam, we know that things are not always as we think they are. Our exalted place in creation notwithstanding, we only know what G-d allows us to know, a fact of life that, when accepted, proves endlessly liberating.
