Michael Avenatti Sentenced to Four Years in Prison

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY…
1989: Beginning of the Tiananmen Square Massacre as Chinese troops open fire on pro-democracy supporters in Beijing.

Federal Judge Jesse M. Furman sentenced Michael Avenatti to four years in prison for defrauding his former client Stormy Daniels out of roughly $300,000.

Avenatti is currently incarcerated for a separate fraud conviction. Furman said the sentence means that the California lawyer will remain in prison for another 2 1/2 years after finishing the 2 1/2 year sentence he’s currently serving.

Daniels, an adult film star, had signed a book deal in 2018 that netted her an $800,000 advance. Prosecutors said Avenatti stole roughly $300,000 of that payout.

At the sentencing in Manhattan federal court, the judge said Avenatti’s actions were “craven and egregious.”

Ahead of the sentencing announcement, a prison uniform-clad Avenatti delivered a long-winded statement, saying that he’d “disappointed scores of people and failed in a cataclysmic way.”
