Senate Democrats Make Another Move That Destroys Their Reputation
Senate Democrats have successfully blocked legislation that would protect women’s sports by barring male “transgender” athletes from competing.
Democrats have once again decided to go against the will of the American people, as a recent New York Times/Ipsos survey showed that 79% of Americans do not want males competing in female sports.
On March 3, a motion to invoke cloture on the bill failed by a 51-45 vote, as the Senate needed a three-fifths majority — meaning 60 votes — to end debate and proceed to a final vote on the measure. The bill was titled “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act,” and was proposed by Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL).
Tuberville’s bill states that it aims to “provide that for purposes of determining compliance with title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 in athletics, sex shall be recognized based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”
If the bill passed, it would amend Section 901 of the Education Amendments of 1972 by adding two provisions at the end: “(1) It shall be a violation of subsection (a) for a recipient of Federal funds who operates, sponsors, or facilitates athletic programs or activities to permit a person whose sex is male to participate in an athletic program or activity that is designated for women or girls. (2) For purposes of this subsection, sex shall be recognized based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”
A similar bill proposed by Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) passed in the Republican-controlled House in January, receiving support from two more moderate Democrats: Reps. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) and Vincente Gonzalez (D-TX).
Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-WY) slammed his Democrat colleagues for blocking the bill, writing in a post on X: “Senate Democrats just BLOCKED the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. Every Senate Republican supported it. Americans agree — men should not compete against women in sports. Democrats are out of touch on this common-sense issue.”
Women’s rights activist Riley Gaines also slammed Senate Democrats for blocking the bill in a post on X.
“45 Democratic Senators voted NO on Protecting Women & Girls in Sports. Never, ever let them gaslight you into thinking Democrats care about ‘women’s rights,’” she wrote.
