Jesus' Words Backed by Archaeology: The Stones Are Crying Out

Jesus' Words Backed by Archaeology: The Stones Are Crying Out

A few years ago, people exploring caves outside Jerusalem came across the find of a lifetime: an ancient burial cave containing the remains of a crucified man. This find is only one in a series of finds that overturns a century-old scholarly consensus.
That consensus held that the Gospels are almost entirely proclamation and contain little, if any, real history. The remains belonged to a man who had been executed in the first century A.D., that is, from the time of Jesus.
As Jeffrey Sheler writes in his book Is the Bible True? the skeleton confirms what the evangelists wrote about Jesus' death and burial in several important ways.
First, location—scholars had long doubted the biblical account of Jesus' burial. They believed that crucified criminals were tossed in a mass grave and then devoured by wild animals. But this man, a near contemporary of Jesus, was buried in the same way the Bible says Jesus was buried.
Then there's the physical evidence from the skeleton. The man's shinbones appeared to have been broken. This confirms what John wrote about the practice of Roman executioners. They would break the legs of the crucified to hasten death, something from which Jesus, already dead, was spared.
This point is particularly noteworthy, since scholars have long dismissed the details of John's Passion narrative as theologically motivated embellishments. Another part of John's Gospel that archaeology has recently corroborated is the story of Jesus healing the lame man in John 5.
John describes a five-sided pool just inside the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem where the sick came to be healed. Since no other document of antiquity—including the rest of the Bible—mentions such a place, skeptics have long argued that John simply invented the place. But as Sheler points out, when archaeologists decided to dig where John said that the pool had been located, they found a five-sided pool. What's more, the pool contained shrines to the Greek gods of healing.
Apparently John didn't make up the pool after all. The dismissal of biblical texts without bothering to dig points to a dirty little secret about a lot of scholarly opinion: Much of the traditional suspicion of the biblical text can only be called a prejudice.
That is, it's a conclusion arrived at before one has the facts. Scholars long assumed that the Bible, like other documents of antiquity, was essentially propaganda, what theologian Rudolf Bultmann called "kerygma" or proclamation.
But this prejudice does an injustice to biblical faith. Central to that faith are history and memory.
Christians believe that God has acted, and continues to act, in history. For us, remembering what God has done is an act of worship—something that brings us closer to God.
Thus, while these discoveries in the desert may come as a surprise to some skeptics, they're no surprise to Christians. While archeology alone cannot bring a person to faith, these finds are an eloquent argument for not dismissing the truth of Scripture before at least examining the evidence, because, as we are learning every day, Jesus meant it when He said, "The very stones will cry out."

The Islamic State reportedly beheaded the remaining Japanese hostage late last month, but a tweet of Kenji Goto's from four years ago is going viral.
"Closing my eyes and holding still. It's the end if I get mad or scream. It's close to a prayer. Hate is not for humans. Judgment lies with God. That's what I learned from my Arabic brothers and sisters," reads a translation of a tweet from Sept. 7, 2010.
It's now been retweeted more than 22,000 times in a tribute to the slain journalist.
Goto was a freelancer who reported on social justice in the Middle East.
Goto accepted Jesus in 1997, according to Assist News Service. Christ's call to reach the poor and broken in spirit seemed to motivate his journalism.
"Children, the poor and the needy, those are where he is coming from," fellow freelance journalist Toshi Maeda told CCTV. "He just wants to meet children in conflicted areas and tell the rest of the world their suffering. As he follows their stories, he ends up in war zones."
"I have seen horrible places and have risked my life, but I know that somehow God will always save me," Goto said in a May article for the Japanese publication Christian Today.

Evil Empire: The 10 Plagues, Islam and the Judgment of God

Evil Empire: The 10 Plagues, Islam and the Judgment of God

The 10 Plagues is one of the most epic and detailed stories in Scriptures. It provides a foundation for our understanding of God's judgment.
Before Moses returned to Egypt, God told him that He would "harden Pharaoh's heart" (Ex. 4:21). However, God did not execute that hardening until the plague of locusts (Ex. 10:1), the eighth plague. Pharaoh had already hardened his own heart seven times in the first seven plagues.
Each time Pharaoh was offered an opportunity for grace and forgiveness; and all seven times he responded with evil. Only after the "fullness" of Pharaoh's hardening his heart in his own free will did God harden his heart as an act of judgment.
Before Moses was sent into Egypt, God told him to throw his staff to the ground; it turned into a serpent (Ex. 4:3). This was a sign of Moses' spiritual authority over satanic forces, symbolized by the serpent. Yet there was another reason. God knew something that Moses didn't know.
Moses had been in the desert for 40 years. The situation had degenerated to the point that cabinet-level ministers so were involved in occult worship that they could turn sticks into serpents (Ex. 7:12), turn water to blood (Ex. 7:22) and raise frogs out of the Nile (Ex. 8:7). Witchcraft was so rampant that the Egyptian kings wore crowns with snakes on them. Therefore, God prepared Moses ahead of time with the power to repel those satanic spirits.
    An Eye for an Eye
The death of the firstborn was the last and worst of the plagues. Remember that the Egyptian pharaohs had been murdering innocent children already for 80 years (Ex. 1:16). God's judgment is always preceded by grace and always perfectly righteous (what you do to others will be done to you).
The murder of the Jewish children in Egypt was the first type of "Holocaust," later to be followed by Haman, Herod, Nazism and today, Islamic Jihad. Islam claims that Mohammed is the final prophet of God following all the biblical prophets, including Moses and Jesus. But ironically, these jihadis have more in common with the evil pharaohs than any Jewish, biblical prophet or apostle.
Jihadis want to bring judgment on Western society for the pervasive sins of corruption and sexual immorality. There is some truth in those accusations (compare Rev. 17:16-17). However, Islamists have raped thousands of innocent girls, which is also a form of sexual immorality; and committed murder and lied, which also transgresses the Ten Commandments. God's prophets must also obey God's moral laws themselves.
After the ten plagues in Exodus, the Egyptian armies were destroyed in the Red Sea. Those armies came with weapons ready to kill, pursuing the helpless multitudes that had been oppressed under brutal slavery for three generations. God's judgment was harsh because the crimes committed were so cruel.
    Round Two
God is a judge; a righteous judge. The Scriptures remind us over and over again that God's judgments are perfectly righteous (Ps. 96:13, 98:9; Rev. 15:4, 19:11). God's judgment includes:
    1. Moral Justice
    2. Offer of Grace
    3. Clear Warnings
    4. Judicial Process
    5. Moral Requirements for Prophets
Islam claims to bring the judgment of God, but does none of the above.
Pharaoh's Egypt in Moses' time was perhaps the most demonic empire in history. However, it would seem from prophetic Scriptures that such an evil empire would happen again. It will be even worse. It will be a worldwide, murderous, genocidal, demonic, tyrannical empire.
The Exodus from Egypt is recorded in the Bible not only as history but also as prophecy. What will happen in the end times will be similar to what happened in Egypt.
[Note: The Hebrew root (Ts-R-R) צרר is the same for the words Antichrist (Tsorer), Tribulation (Tsarot), and Egypt (Mitsrayim).] The story of the exodus provides a biblical framework for understanding God's judgments and plagues in the end times.

4 Prophetic Words That Will Inspire Your Prayer Life

  • woman praying
Sometimes you just don't feel like praying. Sometimes you just want to escape. Let the Holy Spirit ignite a fire in you to pray. (Charisma archives)
Sometimes you pray and you wonder if God is even hearing you. You grow weary in waiting for the answers to your prayers. I've been there. I get it.
But God does hear your prayers. In fact, He loves to hear you pray and wants you to keep crying out. I've been doing Mornings With the Holy Spirit Prayer calls Monday through Friday at 6 AM EST for the past month. The testimonies of how these gatherings have rekindled prayer lives have blessed my heart. You're invited to join us whenever you can for devotions, prophetic intercession and encouragement.
In my book, Mornings With the Holy Spirit: Listening Daily to the Still, Small Voice of God, I have shared with the world prophetic words the Holy Spirit has spoken to my heart over the years during times of prayer, worship and just everyday living. I believe these four prophetic utterances the Holy Spirit shared with me will inspire your prayer life.
    1. I Love to Hear You Pray
I love to hear your voice in prayer every morning when you awake. It's one of My favorite parts of the day. When you awake and begin declaring your love for Us, it moves Our heart. When you inquire of Me, it is My pleasure to answer. When you speak to My heart, it is My joy to speak back to yours. I hear your voice even when the hectic pace of life makes it difficult for you to hear Mine. So keep lifting your voice to Father in prayer. Keep telling Me about your struggles, fears, dreams and victories. I'm listening.
    SCRIPTURE: Psalm 63:1; Psalm 27:4; Psalm 34:15
PRAYER: Remind me to begin each day praising Your name and lifting up my petitions to Father's throne—and help me, because I do not know how to pray as I ought. I trust in You to help me touch Father's heart in prayer.
    2. Keep Crying Out
Sometimes when you stand up for what is right, people around you will call you a fanatic and say you are overreacting. But truth is truth, and you are called to proclaim it. Sometimes when you pursue Jesus with all your heart, all your mind, all your soul and all your strength, people will say you are too fervent. But fire is fire. Remember blind Bartimaeus! He needed a touch from Jesus, so instead of remaining silent when the Messiah went by, he cried out to Him. The people around him told him to quiet his mouth, but he cried out all the more. Don't stop crying out for truth. Don't stop crying out for a touch from Jesus. Don't let anyone put out your fire. We love it!
    SCRIPTURE: Luke 10:27; John 14:6; Mark 10:46-52
PRAYER: I want to burn and shine for You even when people don't understand my love for You. Help me to share Your heart with the people around me so they can know You the way I do and burn and shine with me.
    3. You Can Tell Me Anything
You can trust Me. I am your Confidant. I am your Counselor. You can tell Me anything. Share your God-given dreams with Me, and I will help you bring them to pass. Share your fears with Me, and I will help you overcome them. Share your prayers with Me, and I will help you lift them to Father. You can trust Me. Seeing you walk in everything Jesus has for you—helping you reach your destiny in Christ—is part of My mission. I am on your side! I am for you, not against you.
    SCRIPTURE: John 14:26; Romans 8:26; Romans 8:31
PRAYER: I need Your help more than I realized. Please hear my heart and help me to lean and depend on You as the Lover of my soul. Deliver me from evil, and help me become all Jesus died and rose again for me to be. Help me to trust You more.
    4. I Can Do More Than You Can Imagine
Take the limits off. Do you realize that the power that raised Christ Jesus from the dead dwells in you? Do you know that I am able to do more—much, much more—for you than you can ever imagine? Do you know that I want to? Will you believe in Me the way I believe in you? Take the limits off! Dream with Me! Let your eyes see, your ears hear and your heart dwell on what I have prepared for the one I love. Your best is yet to come. Only believe.
    SCRIPTURE: Ephesians 1:19-20; Ephesians 3:20; 1 Corinthians 2:9
PRAYER: Your promises are glorious, and I want to walk in every one of them. I want to see things the way You see them. Reveal to me the things You have prepared for me in love. Stir my heart to follow You toward Your perfect will.

2015: A Year of Revealing Hidden Things

2015: A Year of Revealing Hidden Things

    man praising God
"The Lord is bringing His bride into purification and dealing with the inner motives of the heart." (Charisma archives)
As 2014 began to draw to a close, I heard The Lord speaking to my spirit that 2015 is going to be a Year of Revealing, hidden things are going to be made known. I sense that it is a time of things being brought to the light.
Luke 8:17 says, "For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and revealed."
The Lord is bringing His bride into purification and dealing with the inner motives of the heart. We must ask ourselves why we are doing what we do. God wants to bring pure and authentic ministry from His bride to the hurting and the broken
I sense that things will be revealed among the nations. Hidden agendas and plans will be exposed as God's people claim the land and pray. Prayer is the catalyst for exposure.
The Father is peeling back the layers that have created a dull edge and sharpening the prophetic voices. The prophetic ministry is coming to the forefront in this season as there is a growing hunger to hear from God. Much of the church world has restricted the Holy Spirit and limited His flow in their meetings but there will be a breaking forth of genuine prophetic ministry among those who are hungry. This is a time of refining for the prophetic community. The words, revelations and voices must be on target and specific. The sword is being sharpened and accuracy increasing!
Amos 3:7 says, "Surely the Lord God does nothing without revealing His purpose to His servants the prophets."
The prophets will be a friend to the church as they partner with the apostles to release direction, insight and instruction, bringing much needed transformation.
    • God is revealing His heart by sending forth messengers of love to release His love over the wounded. Many people in the body of Christ are carrying old wounds. It is the heart of the Father that brings deep healing. A fresh revelation of the love of God will bring healing to many.
    • God is revealing assignments and empowering Holy Spirit shifts.
There are many divine shifts taking place in the body to align people with great purpose. For those who seek the Father there will be revelation of assignment and destiny. God is illuminating the path and revealing His plans.
    • It is a time of seeking, shifting, and moving in obedience—no fear. Fearless obedience. At the beginning of this New Year, the Father is drawing people aside to seek Him. There is much shifting and releasing coming on the horizon. People will be released from dead and unfruitful works to move into kingdom plans. There are also those who have been in a season of separation and will be brought forth into purpose that they saw a long time ago. It seems as if the word has been delayed but in fact God has been preparing their character and getting them ready to steward what is coming!
    • There are shifts and alignments into greater purpose. Many have been faithful in leading what God has given them but there is an elevation coming. They will have to say goodbye to one season in order to say hello to a greater season. Some of the shifts will not make sense to the natural mind but are kingdom advances and will bring great honor and glory to the kingdom. It will take radical obedience to navigate the shifts! Just as Abraham was asked to let go of the familiar, so are many being asked to journey into the unknown (see Gen. 12).
    • There is a spiritual earthquake shaking and breaking false foundations and shifting people into proper position. As I was praying, I saw a spiritual earthquake coming upon the body of Christ. It is going to shake, chip and break the false foundations and religious structure that is holding back the move of God. At the same time, I saw people being moved under the shaking as they were being divinely positioned for the hour! Just as a chess player would move the pieces in position so the Father will rearrange the board during this time.
