It's Official: Franken is Out

"I write to resign my seat as a United States Senator."

And...it's done. Today -- January 2nd -- Al Franken formally resigned from the Senate amid multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. Franken's departure came nearly a month after his initial announcement that he would be vacating his congressional seat.
The official letter of resignation was issued to Mark Dayton, Governor of Minnesota -- the state which had elected the former comedian. Subsequently, lieutenant governor Tina Smith resigned so that she may take Franken's previous post. Smith will be sworn in Wednesday, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
A copy of the letter was obtained by AP reporter Kyle Potter, who shared it via Twitter:
“I write to resign my seat as a United States Senator for the State of Minnesota effective at 1 pm Eastern Standard Time on January 2, 2018. Serving the State of Minnesota in the U.S. Senate has been a privilege and an honor. I am grateful to Minnesotans for giving me the chance to serve our state and our nation, and I am proud to have worked on their behalf.”
Franken came under fire in November, when radio personality Leeann Tweeden chargedthat he had kissed her forcibly and groped her breasts while she slept, during a 2006 USO tour. That accusation spawned others, by seven women implicating the extremely left-wing politician of nonconsensual kissing and touching.
Franken's demise is merely the latest in a long line of flies dropping in the realm of entertainment and elected leadership. It remains to be seen if and how he may attempt to stake another claim in the political world; for now -- as of 1:00 p.m. EST -- his place in politics has been abandoned in disgrace.

Former Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke said Tuesday that he would not be “intimidated into silence” on Twitter after his account was briefly suspended over tweets bashing the media.
Fox News reports that in a now-deleted Saturday tweet, Clarke said he wanted to punch the “lying lib media” and “make them taste their own blood.” The tweet also included an edited photo showing Clarke’s face superimposed on a wrestler kicking another wrestler (labeled CNN) held by a likeness of President Trump.
It read: "BREAKING NEWS! When LYING LIB MEDIA makes up FAKE NEWS to smart me, the ANTIDOTE is go right at them. Punch them in the nose & MAKE THEM TASTE THEIR OWN BLOOD. Nothing gets a bully like a LYING LIB MEDIA’S attention better than to give them a taste of their own blood #neverbackdown"
Twitter initially did not take action against Clarke but reversed course after receiving multiple complaints. Clarke's account was placed on a temporary lock that allowed him to send direct messages only until he took corrective action.
Clarke, a strong Trump supporter and senior adviser to the America First Action PAC, returned to Twitter on Tuesday morning, and the offending tweets were deleted from his page.
“I will not be intimidated into silence by lying lib media,” Clarke tweeted. “I will not be intimidated by liberal hyper partisan government hacks who weaponized government authorirty [sic] to go after people whose views they don’t like. I will stand and fight for truth and what I believe is right. Join me.”

Sarah Silverman 'Sad' Franken Left Office

Sarah Silverman 'Sad' Franken Left Office

I can tell you that all he cares about is the well-being of the lives of his constituents in Minnesota. It's just all he thinks about, it's all he cares about -- and his wife."

After gropey Minnesota senator Al Franken finally declared his official resignation in the wake of a numerous allegations against him of sexual misconduct, his friend -- purported comedienne Sarah Silverman -- revealed that she was "sad" for him and wishes that the 66-year-old had stayed in office.
Fox News reports that Silverman told the celebrity gossip site TMZ that "while she respects the women who accused Franken of sexual misconduct," she felt that he truly cared about his constituents.
"I happen to know him for decades and decades and I can tell you that all he cares about is the well-being of the lives of his constituents in Minnesota. It's just all he thinks about, it's all he cares about -- and his wife."
Don't forget about the half dozen or more women who came forward to accuse him of groping and propositioning them. He cared about them too, in his way.
Silverman said she's also "sad" because "we've taught our children" that the politicians who "take responsibility for their actions" end up losing their jobs, while "the ones that deny, deny, deny and lie and don't admit any wrongdoing," get to keep their jobs, just like "our president."
But Franken didn't take responsibility for his actions. Here is part of his December 7, 2017 statement in which he announced his vague intention to step down from the Senate:
"I also think [his response to harassment allegations] gave some people the false impression that I was admitting to doing things that in fact I haven't done. Some of the allegations against me are simply not true. Others I remember very differently."
Then it took him nearly a month after his promise to step down to actually do so. Franken only "took responsibility" for his "actions" when he couldn't deny his guilt any longer. Meanwhile, President Trump has been proven guilty of no sexual harassment.
