And...it's done. Today -- January 2nd -- Al Franken formally resigned from the Senate amid multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. Franken's departure came nearly a month after his initial announcement that he would be vacating his congressional seat.
The official letter of resignation was issued to Mark Dayton, Governor of Minnesota -- the state which had elected the former comedian. Subsequently, lieutenant governor Tina Smith resigned so that she may take Franken's previous post. Smith will be sworn in Wednesday, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
A copy of the letter was obtained by AP reporter Kyle Potter, who shared it via Twitter:
“I write to resign my seat as a United States Senator for the State of Minnesota effective at 1 pm Eastern Standard Time on January 2, 2018. Serving the State of Minnesota in the U.S. Senate has been a privilege and an honor. I am grateful to Minnesotans for giving me the chance to serve our state and our nation, and I am proud to have worked on their behalf.”
Franken came under fire in November, when radio personality Leeann Tweeden chargedthat he had kissed her forcibly and groped her breasts while she slept, during a 2006 USO tour. That accusation spawned others, by seven women implicating the extremely left-wing politician of nonconsensual kissing and touching.
Franken's demise is merely the latest in a long line of flies dropping in the realm of entertainment and elected leadership. It remains to be seen if and how he may attempt to stake another claim in the political world; for now -- as of 1:00 p.m. EST -- his place in politics has been abandoned in disgrace.
