‘Comfortable’ Catholics are ‘unwilling’ to see dangers facing Church: Scholar

ROME, May 23, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) -- Too many Catholics are caught up in a “comfortable” Catholicism that makes them unwilling, and even unable, to see the “grave problems” currently besetting the Church, said a renowned theologian and one of the world’s top Catholic experts on the Church Fathers.
“Most Catholics seem to live their life on a sort of comfortable zone, just the way that a lot of bishops live in a sort of safety-first sort of zone,” Australian patristics and classics scholar Anna Silvas said. “It is too disturbing” for those living in such a zone to “pry any more deeply,” because what they might find will challenge them too much, she added.
Silvas was specifically referring to problems arising from Pope Francis’ controversial Amoris Laetitia. The Apostolic Exhortation’s novel concept of “mercy” has been used by some Cardinals and bishops to justify giving Holy Communion to civilly-divorced-and-remarried Catholics living in adultery and even to people living in a homosexual relationship. Catholic critics say that such a move amounts to giving tacit approval to adultery and homosexuality, actions that have always been condemned by the Church as gravely immoral sexual sins.
Silvas, a senior research fellow at Australia's University of New England, said that too many in the Church are governed by what she called an “affective papalism,” in which everything a pope says is “an oracle from heaven.”
People are too scared to ask what happens when a pope is “disobedient” to the teachings of a previous pope, she said. That kind of question “doesn’t compute” for most people, she added.
Silvas said that faithful Catholics who notice discrepancies between what a pope saysthe Church teaches and what the Church actually teaches are called “unfaithful,” when nothing could be further from the truth.
She said that the laity, priest, bishops, cardinals, and the pope are all “obliged” to be obedient to Jesus Christ and to the teachings of the Catholic Church which he founded.
“The Church is a covenant of common obedience...and all are obliged to that obedience to Jesus Christ, right up to the top. The pope needs to be obedient, indeed, preeminently so,” she said.
Silvas said that Pope Benedict was likely right when he spoke of a faithful Church, one that is obedient to Christ, being a smaller Church.
A faithful Church will shrink in numbers, she said, but it will acquire a different character than what is currently in vogue.
“[Only] a really intense commitment to Christ will jolt us out of [the current crisis],” she said. “There are no easy answers except for a very serious interior turning to Our Lord who is the one true Lord, Master, and Bridegroom of his Church, yesterday, today, and forever,” she added.
Professor Silvas joins the ranks of Princeton Professor Robert P. George and Catholic writer Msgr. Charles Pope in calling Catholics to rise from a “comfortable Catholicism” and live the truth of the Gospel without compromise.
“The days of socially acceptable Christianity are over, the days of comfortable Catholicism are past,” said Prof. George in a 2014 speech. “It is no longer easy to be a faithful Christian, a good Catholic, an authentic witness to the truths of the Gospel. A price is demanded and must be paid,” he said.
Msgr. Charles Pope wrote in a 2016 article that Catholics must put away “comfort” and live their faith as if they were at war.
“It seems there is no awareness that we are at war and that Catholics need to be summoned to sobriety, increasing separation from the wider culture, courageous witness and increasing martyrdom,” he said.

Franklin Graham offers Rosie O’Donnell salvation in Jesus after she condemned Paul Ryan ‘to hell’

January 2, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – Rev. Franklin Graham offered Liberal comedienne and lesbian Rosie O’Donnell a chance to be saved by Jesus Christ after she told Republican Paul Ryan that he would go “to hell” for voting for tax cuts.
The son of famous evangelist Billy Graham reacted on his Facebook page to a condemnatory tweet from O’Donnell to House Speaker Paul Ryan, who had tweeted about the beauty of the Christmas season.
Ryan’s tweet was an excerpt from a Christmas message in which he said the “true Christmas spirit” was seeing “the light overcomes the darkness.”  “The glory of God shines all around us,” Ryan continued, “and brings us closer to one another.”
Late Christmas Eve, as many families were gathering to celebrate the birth of Jesus, O’Donnell took offense at Ryan’s voting for tax cuts. She attacked his Christmas message.
“Paul Ryan - don’t talk about Jesus after what u just did to our nation - u will go straight to hell u screwed up fake altar boy,” the comedian-turned talk show host tweeted.
O’Donnell added a hashtag, “#JUDASmuch,” connecting Ryan with the betrayer of Jesus.
While Ryan let the condemnation drop by merely responding, “We wish everyone a Merry Christmas,” Rev. Franklin Graham took up the argument.
“Rosie, you don’t have the keys to Hell, but I know the One who does,” the famous preacher posted on Facebook the morning after Christmas.
Rev. Graham explained that all are sinners but God offers forgiveness to all in Christ.  “Jesus Christ is God in the flesh, and He took your sins and mine to the Cross, dying in our place, so that we might live--if we would turn from our sins and put our faith in Him,” Graham wrote.
The outspoken minister then directly appealed to the vulgar actress.  “I hope one day you will put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ and let him heal your heart, clean up your mouth, and forgive your sins,” the reverend concluded.
The following day, December 27th, Graham explained his motivation for challenging O’Donnell on Fox News.
Half-jokingly, the pastor noted O’Donnell’s tweet proved she is a believer.  “I’m glad to know that Rosie is a fundamentalist,” he told the “Fox and Friends” program.  “She believes in Hell.  So many people don’t.”
On a more serious note, Rev. Graham shared his concern is for O’Donnell’s salvation.
“Rosie, if you are watching, I hope you put your faith and trust in Christ because He will forgive your sins and heal your heart ... if you put your faith and trust in Him,” he said.
While “Fox and Friends” hosts attempted to pit Graham further against O’Donnell, asking him why she “wakes up angry” and full of hatred, Graham did not take the bait.  Instead, he emphasized that the nation is in need of prayer.
“Our country is in trouble,” the evangelist warned, “and I don’t have any faith in our political system ... There is so much political hate in Washington, it’s broken.”
“I don’t have any faith in the Republican Party or the Democratic Party,” Graham continued.  “The only hope for our country is God.”
He urged Americans to pray fervently for their nation and for President Trump.
When the Fox News team baited Graham to comment on what they said was the president’s lack of accomplishments, he refused to criticize, noting how much of Trump’s agenda has been blocked by Congress.
Instead, Graham pointed out the positive.  “He has prayer with his cabinet,” he said.  “He is not afraid to mention Jesus’ name in public ... I appreciate that so much about him. But we need to pray for him because he is our president.”
O’Donnell has of late taken to vulgar tweets against conservatives, most recently the Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro.
Shapiro criticized O’Donnell’s apparently serious bribe of $2 million to Republican senators to vote against the Trump tax bill.  In response, O’Donnell cursed Shapiro with a sexually-explicit obscenity.
Shapiro reported the offense to Twitter, which initially found no problem with the harassment, but later had the comment deleted.
Even conservative victims of terrorism are not exempt from O’Donnell’s crudity.  She attacked pro-life Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), who nearly died from a pro-abortion terrorist attack at baseball practice, calling him the “f”-word for voting for tax cuts and commenting that since he didn’t die he should “do something” better with his life.
Rep. Scalise simply turned the other cheek, responding, “Bless your heart.”

There is no doubt that the United States has dedicated, well-trained first responders who bravely risk their own lives when disaster strikes. We have only to view images of the tragic events of 9/11 to realize how brave these men and women truly are.
Nonetheless, a disturbing study by researchers from the University of Georgia recently found that the majority of U.S. first responders have received no training in how to deal with the aftereffects of a nuclear attack, and that many are so frightened of radiation that they would be unwilling to assist in the event of such a disaster.
The study was published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health.
News Wise reports that experts have warned that “a radiological or nuclear event is inevitable,” and as such, it is vitally important that emergency workers be trained and ready to deal with this when it happens.
The New Yorker recently warned that America’s relations with North Korea, which have never been particularly good, have been strained to breaking point in the past few months:
In the six years since Kim Jong Un assumed power, at the age of twenty-seven, he has tested eighty-four missiles—more than double the number that his father and grandfather tested. … On the Fourth of July, North Korea passed a major threshold: it launched its first intercontinental ballistic missile powerful enough to reach the mainland United States.
And, U.S. defense secretary, Jim Mattis, has warned that the threat of a nuclear attack by North Korea “is accelerating.” (Related: Intelligence insider says war with North Korea likely within weeks: This could be your final prepper warning.)
To test whether emergency personnel are prepared for such an eventuality, the research team surveyed over 400 first responders from across the U.S. and Asia. They wanted to determine two things:
1) Would emergency workers even be willing to show up at the site of a nuclear attack?
2) How prepared are they to handle this type of crisis?
Shockingly, more than 50 percent of the respondents admitted that they had never received any special training in how to deal with a nuclear crisis. As a result, many were poorly informed, for example, believing that the greatest need for treatment in the aftermath of a nuclear attack would be for thermal burns, when in reality, most injuries in this type of situation are lacerations.
This lack of knowledge would leave personnel ill-prepared and under-resourced in the event of a nuclear disaster.
Another disturbing truth revealed by the survey was that a nuclear bomb would make many respondents “unwilling to come to work.” Survey participants were more terrified of a nuclear disaster than any other crisis, including a chemical or biological disaster.
“I was not surprised that the responses from the emergency medical community were relatively poor in terms of knowledge and attitudes, because that’s what you get with radiation—myths versus reality,” said the study’s lead author, Professor Cham E. Dallas, director of the Institute for Disaster Management at UGA’s College of Public Health.
It is important that emergency medical personnel be taught that they can confidently respond in a nuclear crisis situation. Historically, responding to such events has not presented any risk to first responders.
The research team believes that medical personnel are afraid of nuclear events because humans tend to fear what they do not know, and these types of events are incredibly rare.
Professor Dallas also pointed out that Hollywood’s portrayal of such events adds to the myth that nothing can be done in the face of a nuclear disaster, when this is really not the truth.
Irrespective, the study has highlighted the urgent need for the first responders that we all rely on to be trained and ready to deal with what is increasingly looking like an inevitable nuclear disaster.
