Ruptly is live as protesters march in Berlin on Saturday, August 1, under the slogan 'End of the Pandemic – Day of Freedom.' Several counter-protests are expected across the city.
Protesters sceptical of coronavirus measures are expected to gather in the German capital from across the country to declare the ongoing pandemic 'over.' Among the organisers are groups such as Stuttgart-based 'Querdenken 711' and Berlin-based 'Kommunikationsstelle Demokratischer Widerstand'.
The protests come amid a recent increase in the number of coronavirus cases in Germany. Robert Koch Institute president Lothar Wieler said on Tuesday that the disease control institute was "very concerned" at the development. He emphasised that citizens must abide by the coronavirus measures "for the upcoming months," and said the rules should not be questioned.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced the measures in March, in order to curb the spread of the virus. The measures have been gradually relaxed as the number of confirmed cases has decreased.
