WASHINGTON (ChurchMilitant.com) - Joe Biden mutated Senate hearings of Supreme Court nominees into a "blood sport," according to a Washington attorney who has worked on three Senate confirmations.

"As we head toward Judge Amy Coney Barrett's Senate confirmation hearings on her nomination to the Supreme Court, let's not forget that former Vice President Joe Biden is responsible for turning the high court confirmation process into a blood sport driven by character assassination," attorney Mark Paoletta commented on Thursday.

A senior official for the Trump administration, Paoletta worked on the Senate confirmations of Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.

"Biden, now the Democratic presidential nominee, claims to work across the aisle with Republicans," Paoletta observed. "But his vicious conduct as a Democratic senator from Delaware in the confirmation hearings for Robert Bork (whose nomination was not confirmed) and now-Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is a permanent stain on the Senate's reputation."

Paoletta observed that Biden's running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, behaved in like manner during the 2018 Senate hearing for Brett Kavanaugh, smearing the now-Justice's reputation with "baseless and absurd allegations."

We are fortunate that neither Biden nor Harris is chairing the confirmation hearings scheduled to begin Oct. 12.Tweet

"We are fortunate that neither Biden nor Harris is chairing the confirmation hearings scheduled to begin Oct. 12 in the Judiciary Committee for [Amy Coney] Barrett, who is currently a judge on the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and was nominated to the Supreme Court Saturday by President Trump," continued Paoletta.

Paoletta recalled President Ronald Reagan's 1987 nomination of U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Robert Bork to the Supreme Court, noting Bork "was considered one of the finest legal scholars and well-regarded public servants in our country, earning an extremely well-qualified rating from the American Bar Association."

"But the left — led by Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Biden — decided to savage Bork through character attacks and false claims in a craven and unprincipled tactic for political gain," he explained.

Character Assassination of Justice Clarence Thomas

Biden behaved even worse with the smear campaign against now-Justice Clarence Thomas in 1991, according to Paoletta.

"Thomas seemed on his way to Senate confirmation with more than 60 votes when, prodded on by Democratic staff, Anita Hill lodged last-minute, baseless accusations of sexual harassment against Thomas, which were leaked by these same Democratic staffers," Paoletta recalled.

Anita Hill accused Thomas of sexual harassment as her supervisor at the U.S. Department of Education and Department of Education and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Paoletta explained that "Biden used his position as Judiciary Committee chairman to execute the character assassination," allowing "Hill's lawyer to sit in on her key corroborating witness interview, bending the rules to help hype Hill's salacious lies by trying to selectively stifle what senators could discuss."

Spotlighting Biden's duplicity at the time, Paoletta said:

Biden now says he always believed Hill. But that is a lie. Biden told Clarence Thomas that if Hill's allegations were leaked, he would defend Thomas' character. Biden told Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, during the hearings that he did not believe Hill. And Biden told Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., in a 1998 interview that he did not believe Anita Hill was telling the truth.

Paoletta was with Justice Thomas the night he was confirmed when the phone rang.

Biden used his position as Judiciary Committee chairman to execute the character assassination.Tweet

"It was Joe Biden calling to congratulate Thomas on getting confirmed, telling him not to let this get him down and that Thomas had many years to show the American people what he was — a person of character," he recollected. "Does that sound like a man who believed Anita Hill's allegations?"

"I was a young attorney at the time and had worked closely with Thomas through that awful ordeal, and I could not believe that Biden had allowed this circus — this "national disgrace," as Thomas called it — to happen when Biden never believed Anita Hill," he added.

Robert Bork's Wife in Agreement

Published on Monday in the Wall Street Journal, Mary Ellen Bork, Robert Bork's widow, offered comment in a piece titled, "Joe Biden and the Borking of Supreme Court Nominees."

"The week of hearings in 1987 showed me Joe Biden's partisanship and pragmatism," she noted. "Most people don't remember the hearings on Robert Bork for nomination to the Supreme Court, but I do."

"I was there during the four months of vicious political campaigning against this judicial nominee, my husband, and in the Senate hearing room as then-Sen. Biden presided over a rigged hearing full of an unprecedented level of lying and distortion of a man known for his integrity and judicial wisdom," she continued. "Democrats flagrantly lied about Bob's record of opinions."

Biden was running for president at the time.

"On day four of the hearings Sen. Biden was accused of plagiarism and had to drop out of the presidential race," Bork remembered. "In the course of one week Sen. Biden orchestrated a vicious lying assault and was caught passing off someone else's words as his own."

We will all have tears in our eyes if Joe Biden is elected president.Tweet

Now, thirty-three-years later, Biden is running for president again — "still a man without a compass, guided now by prevailing progressive winds," says Bork.

"After Bob left the court in 1988 to devote himself to writing and teaching, Democrats would often come up to him to apologize for the way the Democratic politicians treated him and would leave with tears in their eyes," she shared. "We will all have tears in our eyes if Joe Biden is elected president."

Robert Bork died a Catholic, having credited his wife for his conversion.

In first debate, Biden skates while Trump slogs

Leftist Fox News anchor Chris Wallace has received almost universal scorn for the way he moderated the first presidential debate of 2020. The Federalist bestowed on him the dubious distinction of having given America "the most embarrassing moderator performance in history."

And while he fully deserves that title, it's not because he couldn't control President Trump — which is what the leftist establishment media is saying.

A Rasmussen poll conducted before Tuesday night's debate revealed 40% of likely voters believe debate moderators will try to help Joe Biden — and boy, were they right.

According to Trump campaign member Abigail Marone, Wallace interrupted Trump a total of 76 times while he interrupted Biden only 15 times. It was actually President Trump who was reserved at the beginning while Wallace and Biden started interrupting him.

Breitbart's John Nolte breaks down how Trump kept quiet at the beginning of the debate. But he became animated only after both Biden and Wallace started interrupting him while he was debunking Biden's "100-million people with preexisting health conditions" rhetoric.

Biden will continue with the advantage of having liberal moderators for two more debates, and these moderators promise to be even more leftist than Wallace. Trump will be in for the slog of his life just to be heard, and he'll have to do everything he can just to get something close to a fair shake.

WEST COVINA, Calif. (ChurchMilitant.com) - Bishop Joseph Strickland is affirming that Fr. James Altman should be speaking out on the things Catholics need to hear.

Asked by Terry Barber, president of Virgin Most Powerful Radio (VMPR) if he'd accept Altman into his diocese should the opportunity arise, Stickland immediately responded, "Absolutely."

"He would be absolutely welcome here. And I'm blessed to have many priests ... who appreciate his speaking up and are trying to do their best to do the same thing," added Strickland.

Altman came under fire from the Left in late August for denouncing abortion and the Catholics who vote for Democrats who push it.

"You cannot be Catholic and be a Democrat," declared Altman.

Altman also came under duress from Bp. William Callahan of La Crosse, Wisconsin. His bishop publically reprimanded him for the video that subsequently went viral and even warned him of possible "canonical penalties" if he didn't keep silent.

It was a low point for him, said Altman. The only bishop to support him at that time was Strickland, who tweeted on Sept. 5, ""As the Bishop of Tyler I endorse Fr Altman's statement in this video. My shame is that it has taken me so long. Thank you Fr Altman for your COURAGE. If you love Jesus & His Church & this nation ... please HEED THIS MESSAGE."

I can't thank you enough bishop.Tweet

During the interview with VMPR, Altman explained what Strickland's support meant to him: "I have to tell ya, when you're alone, and you feel alone, and a hero tweets, the words that he used, in his humility, when I get overwhelmed, you can't breathe and your eyes burn and you choke up I guess is the phrase," explained an emotionally charged Altman.

"I can't thank you enough bishop," he added. "You brought grace into my life at a very important time."

Altman has not gone silent. In addition to speaking with Barber and Strickland on "The Bishop Strickland Hour," he also spoke up forcefully during an interview on Oct. 1 with Church Militant.

ROME (ChurchMilitant.com) - In an unprecedented intervention into the U.S. election debate, a top cardinal is warning of dire global consequences if Americans vote for a presidential candidate with a communist, abortionist and gender ideology agenda.

Image

"Three points are decisive in the upcoming elections," Cdl. Gerhard Müller, the former Vatican doctrinal watchdog, told Breitbart News, in a clear condemnation of Catholic-in-name-only presidential candidate Joe Biden.

"First, the 'yes' to life against abortion, second, freedom of religion against the mainstreaming of gender ideology, and third, the mission of the U.S. to defend democracy and human rights against dictatorships."

"American Catholics, Christians of other denominations, and all people of faith must render an account to God over whom they make commander of the flagship of the free world," the former prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) said Thursday.

"The outcome of the U.S. election will determine whether the U.S. remains the leading power in the world — for freedom and democracy — or whether a communist dictatorship will assume that role for the global community," Müller underlined.

A day after Vatican Secretary of State Cdl. Pietro Parolin defiantly announced Pope Francis would renew a controversial deal with China, despite U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warning the Vatican risked "endangering its moral authority," Müller blasted China for its imitation of Nazi totalitarianism.

"In China, the motto of Nazi Germany is repeated: You are nothing — the state is everything. And yet the truth is the other way around: people are everything and the state exists only to serve the common good," he stated.

"No government has the right to arbitrarily arrest and even torture its citizens, to brainwash them, to hold them in concentration camps, to murder them, to harvest their organs like spare parts and sell them on the world market," he noted, referring to the persecution of Uighur Muslims, Catholics, and Falun Gong practitioners.

In a not-so-subtle reference to Pope Francis' capitulation to China, the cardinal urged "the leaders of the Catholic Church" to "see the deeper dimensions of what is at stake at this moment in world history rather than offering a judgment based on subjective sensibilities and ideological preferences."

"As Christians, we must insist on the truth of the absolute value of every individual person, especially for the people of China and freedom of religion must be guaranteed in theory and practice," he asserted.

"The rivalry between the U.S. and Communist China is not a sporting competition for the first or second place of superpowers" but is "about the irreconcilable alternatives of democracy or dictatorship," Müller maintained.

"Because the U.S. is the first power in the free world, it must also put a stop to the imperialist grip of a communist superpower that seeks world domination and allow the Chinese people and other oppressed peoples to enter the community and solidarity of free peoples," he added.

Debunking the myth of the "seamless garment" promoted by many U.S. bishops, the cardinal lashed out at the moral equivalency liberal Catholics are attempting to draw between abortion on the one hand and immigration, climate change, healthcare and poverty on the other.

You can't compare apples to oranges. The human right to life is so fundamental that it cannot be equated with other political issues.Tweet

"You can't compare apples to oranges. The human right to life is so fundamental that it cannot be equated with other political issues," he categorically declared. "According to Catholic teaching, not all issues have the same weight."

"Therefore, a candidate who does not clearly oppose abortion and euthanasia is unelectable for a person who believes in God, and especially for every Catholic, because abortion is a heinous crime against the life of the person and against God, the creator of every human life," he added.

Joe Biden and vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris have to date offered Americans the most radical abortion agenda in U.S. history.

Müller acknowledged he was "opposed to the application of the death penalty for serious criminals," but insisted that "the death penalty for murderers cannot be compared to the murder of innocent children."

Also, issues like immigration could "be legitimately debated, like the border wall with Mexico," he observed, "but not the lives of unborn children, without being complicit in their murder" since "the moral law declares a categorical 'no' to the killing of children in the womb, handicapped children after birth, and sick and elderly people."

"A candidate must be fundamentally assessed as to whether he or she fully recognizes and is prepared to uphold human rights, beginning with the right to life," he stressed, for "anyone who subordinates the right to life to other objectives undermines democracy itself, which is not based on changing majority opinion, but on inalienable human rights."

"The world is looking to America because this fateful election will determine the future of democracy and human rights for decades to come," the cardinal said.

Cardinal ignoring immoral manufacturer practices?

You are not signed in as a Premium user; we rely on Premium users to support our news reporting. Sign in or Sign up today!

Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago recently posted a video on the archdiocese of Chicago's website advocating getting a flu shot, demonstrating, as some sort of a guinea pig, just how easy and painless this all is — for all the world to see!

This is especially strange, as just this past summer Bp. Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas went on record saying he will not take any vaccine manufactured through the immoral and evil use of aborted fetal stem cells. This question, as reported by Church Militant, had been presented to Bp. Strickland by the faithful in light of many vaccine manufacturers using aborted fetal stem cells in their race to produce a Wuhan virus vaccine.

Cardinal Cupich's recent flu vaccine video virtue-signaling — wink, wink — it's OK to get a vaccine — at first blush is just odd!

Why would a cardinal advocate for a vaccine and demonstrate how easy it is to get one, as compared to talking about, for example, keeping holy the Sabbath, or making a good confession? Why should any man of the Church advocate for a vaccine at this time, when most Catholics have grave moral reservations about them?

After all, it's become common knowledge that many vaccines currently in use — for rubella, measles, mumps, rabies, polio, smallpox, hepatitis A, chickenpox, and herpes zoster — have been created by the immoral use of aborted fetal stem cells. Vaccines can and were manufactured in the past without using aborted fetal stem cells, but since abortion has become rampant and promoted as a good in society, that has changed.

Image
Dr. Paul Offit

Vaccine manufacture through the use of aborted fetal stem cells is cited as just another benefit for society as a whole — "Look here we have all these great vaccines for various diseases, because of the great good of abortion."

Perhaps not stating it so crassly, pediatrician Dr. Paul Offit, co-inventor of a rotavirus vaccine, leaves no stone unturned in hawking how great vaccines are, regardless of how they are created.

Offit goes so far as to lie to Catholics who have qualms about vaccines, saying: "Yes, Pope Benedict XVI, has ruled 'Yes' it is OK to get it."

Talk about a whopper of a misleading statement! Offit's assertion is an outright lie. Pope Benedict XVI never gave blanket approval for any vaccine, let alone vaccines made through the use of cells harvested from immorally aborted human beings.

The actual document published by the Pontifical Academy for Life cited by Dr. Offit states:

[D]octors and fathers of families have a duty to take recourse to alternative vaccines (if they exist), putting pressure on the political authorities and health systems so that other vaccines without moral problems become available. They should take recourse, if necessary, to the use of conscientious objection with regard to the use of vaccines produced by means of cell lines of aborted human foetal origin. Equally, they should oppose by all means (in writing, through the various associations, mass media, etc.) the vaccines which do not yet have morally acceptable alternatives, creating pressure so that alternative vaccines are prepared, which are not connected with the abortion of a human foetus, and requesting rigorous legal control of the pharmaceutical industry producers.

So, Dr. Offit, how do you extrapolate from this document, approved by Cdl. Joseph Ratzinger when he was Prefect for the Doctrine of the Faith, that "Yes" its okay to get a vaccine manufactured by use of aborted fetal stem cells?  What are you promoting to the spiritual detriment of the Catholic faithful?

I side with Strickland — no vaccine is better than a vaccine made through the murder of a child in the womb.Tweet

Moreover, as "off" as Offit's remark is, Cdl. Cupich's recent odd promo for vaccines is even more highly suspect. It is widely-recognized that many immoral and unethical practices have become commonplace among vaccine manufacturers, whose central consideration seems to be making a quick buck.

Bishop Strickland urges Catholics to speak out "against all the evils that have come to light with respect to vaccines and the use of aborted fetal cells in their manufacture."

I side with Strickland — no vaccine is better than a vaccine made through the murder of a child in the womb.
