Turkey’s Erdogan says Jerusalem ‘is our city’

Turkish strongman lays pre-WW1 Ottoman claim to Israel’s capital, saying it “is our city.”

By Paul Shindman, World Israel News

Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan said Thursday that Israel’s capital city of Jerusalem still belongs to Turkey.

In a speech marking the opening of the fall session of Turkey’s parliament, covered by Turkish media, ErdoÄŸan began with harsh criticism of Armenia for the the armed conflict that broke out this week with Azerbaijan and their mutual claims to the Nagorno-Karabakh region. However, his comments shifted closer to home and he made the surprise remark that Jerusalem still belongs to Turkey.

“The Jerusalem issue is not a geopolitical problem for us. Jerusalem is our city, a city from us,” Erdogan said, referring to the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War One.

“In this city [Jerusalem] that we had to leave in tears during the first world war, it is still possible to encounter traces of the Ottoman resistance,” Erdogan said. “We accept it an honor on behalf of our country and nation to express the rights of the oppressed Palestinian people on every platform.”

The Ottoman Empire controlled Jerusalem for 400 years until its defeat at the hands of the Western allies who divided up the former empire, with many of its former provinces becoming independent Arab countries. During the war the Ottomans also carried out the Armenian genocide, murdering some 1.5 million Christian Armenians – enmity that remains and led to Erdogan’s condemnation of Armenia.

Despite Turkey being a member of NATO, relations with Israel have been repeatedly strained under Erdogan.

Relations between the two countries took a nosedive in 2010 after nine Turkish nationals belonging to a radical Islamic group were killed during an IDF raid of the Mavi Marmara flotilla that was trying to illegally violate Israel’s blockade on Gaza.

Turkey withdrew its ambassador and relations were only restored in 2016. However, Erdogan has tried to assert his influence over the region and has become a patron of the Hamas terror group that seized power in Gaza in a bloody 2007 military coup.

Turkey has been allowing Hamas to use its territory to organize against Israel and was recently revealed to be giving citizenship to known Hamas terrorists, allowing them free passage in the West.

A Desire for God’s Approval

To the glory and praise of God.
–Philippians 1:11

In his letter to the Philippian Christians, the apostle Paul said that his outrageous joy was based on a desire for God’s approval. “This I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ; having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God” (Philippians 1:9-11).

First, Paul prayed that their “love may abound still more and more.” That word “abound” means “to overflow.” Imagine placing a bucket under Niagara Falls. That’s the kind of overflowing love he was talking about. Paul prayed that their love for God and their love for one another would overflow more and more. Why? So they could have spiritual goose bumps? No. He wanted their love to result in a real knowledge of God and who He is.

Paul also said he wanted their love to result in “all discernment.” The word “discernment” means to have a taste for what is good. Paul wanted them to “approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere.” The word translated “sincere” means “without blemish.” Paul also wanted them to be “blameless.” That word in Greek refers to the part of an animal trap on which the bait was attached to deceive the animal. Paul was saying, “I don’t want you to live in such a way that your lives cause other Christians to stumble or fall.” Paul wanted them–and us–to be sincere and blameless “until the day of Christ.” In other words, Paul lived in anticipation of the day he would meet Jesus face-to-face. Why? “To the glory and praise of God.” Above everything else, Paul wanted God’s approval. And this ultimate purpose gave Paul an eternal perspective on his suffering. As long as he had God’s approval, he didn’t care about anything else.

Is that true of you? Are you living your life for an audience of one? Years later, Paul wrote these words about the joy that comes from living for God’s approval: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing” (2 Timothy 4:7-8).

Joy is not an emotion. Joy is a choice. If you want to maintain outrageous joy despite your circumstances, choose to be grateful for God’s blessings in your life. Choose to be confident in God’s purpose for your life. Choose to fellowship with other believers in the church. And choose, above all, to live your life for God’s approval.

TRANSCRIPT

Election analysts have identified Pennsylvania as a must win state. "Pennsylvania, obviously, is the gateway to the re-elect," noted The Daily Beast Politics Editor, Sam Stein.

Trump won the state by a little more than 44,000 votes, less than 1% of all votes cast — the narrowest margin for Pennsylvania in nearly 200 years. In 2016, Trump was battling wildly unpopular Hilary Clinton, and he barely won. In 2020, Trump is battling Joe Biden, the state's hometown boy from Scranton.

A home-field advantage can make a difference, and Biden is doing everything he can to play up his Pennsylvania roots (a state he hasn't lived in for 65 years). And in a state with a greater-than-average Catholic population, Biden is also playing up his Catholic heritage.

The battle for the Catholic vote in Pennsylvania will be fierce because it will likely make or break the results. The bishops of Pennsylvania are in a position to make a difference in either direction. Two bishops of particular concern are Scanton's Joseph Bambera  — from Biden's childhood hometown — and Erie's Lawrence Persico. Both bishops are registered Democrats.

There are half a million Catholics in the two dioceses. In a close race, these two bishops could have a disproportionate amount of influence. While neither bishop has come out and endorsed Biden, there is evidence at least one of them has been feeding his flock ideas that support a Biden presidency.

Bambera, in particular, has a history of using his office to undermine the Faith with bad teaching. A vicar in the diocese of Scranton — a priest appointed by the bishop for a leadership position — used his homily to make the deliberately confusing suggestion that people on both sides of the abortion issue had missed the point.

Pennsylvania, obviously, is the gateway to the re-elect.Tweet

"Unfortunately, neither side is really understanding the motive for life itself," said Fr. John Polenack. Bambera's own views on abortion have been questioned. He is a "seamless garment" Catholic who refuses to prioritize the horror of abortion over other social evils.

"We cannot rank one of these groups above the others," he said.

Bambera's promotion of homosexualist priest Fr. James Martin goes back at least to 2016 when he invited Martin to give the keynote address to his priests at the annual diocesan congress.

In 2017, when 18,000 Catholics signed a petition expressing their concern that Fr. Martin would be speaking at Misericordia University, Bambera was quick to come to his defense. These actions have an effect on people's lives and influence their decisions in the voting booth.

All things being equal, these bishops have the potential to singlehandedly wipe out the narrow margin of votes Trump had in 2016 and usher in a Biden victory.

Between the two dioceses of Scranton and Erie, there are approximately 1.3 million registered voters; 28% of these voters are Catholic. If these bishops and their priests are able to influence even 1% of them, that puts 36,000 votes on the Joe Biden side.
