A Prayer to Honor Our Fallen Servicemen and Women

Bible Reading:
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” - John 15:13

Why do we commemorate Memorial Day? Sadly, many in our nation today don’t really know why Memorial Day was established. They view it primarily as a day off work and a three-day holiday full of family outings and outdoor fun, with no clue to its meaning or remembrance of our fallen military.

Miracles in American History author, historian, and speaker, William J. Federer, notes, “Memorial Day in America, as an annual observance, can be traced back to the end of the Civil War, a war in which over half a million died. Southern women scattered spring flowers on graves of both northern Union and southern Confederate soldiers.”

Originally called Decoration Day, it was a day for loved ones to decorate the graves of their fallen soldiers. Later, Memorial Day was renamed, and it was established to remember and honor all servicemen and women who died in American wars. In 1868, it was formally designated for May 30th by the Grand Army of the Republic, a Union veterans’ organization.

“It’s a time to honor the fallen. To honor those who have paid the last full measure of devotion to our nation,” explains Dr. Jerry Newcombe, Executive Director of Providence Forum.

Freedom Isn’t Free
Countless families have paid the dearest,  most costly price on earth for America’s freedom; the loss of a family member in the Armed Forces, an overwhelming loss, grief, and sorrow for their families and friends.

“We are free in large part because others sacrificed on our behalf so that we might be free. Memorial Day is an annual reminder of the debt we owe to those who died while serving our country,” explains Newcombe.

Whether a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or U.S. Coast Guard, their deaths are tragic and don’t make their dying as a fallen hero any less painful to those who love and miss them. Their sudden passing can be extremely difficult for parents, spouses, and children to accept and process, often coming without warning, unexpectedly, and without an opportunity to say goodbye.

For Armed Forces Members Who Died In Christ
As Christians, although families know their fallen soldiers are with Christ, there can come a crisis of faith, trying to understand how their prayers for safety and protection seemed to fall short—wrestling with trying to understand why their prayers seemed to go unanswered for their military loved ones. The Apostle Paul offers some comfort, assuring us in Philippians 1:21, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”

As believers in Jesus Christ, fallen servicemen and women have gained eternal life in Christ, with their lives beginning anew and forevermore in Heaven. As explained in John 11:25, “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me will live, even though they die.”

Revelation 21:3-4 describes the life they entered when they left this earth. “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Let’s Pray:

Dear Father, We thank you for the many brave armed forces men and women who lost their lives in service to our country, for the time they spent away from their loved ones to protect and secure our nation, and ultimately laying down their lives on our behalf. Today, we want to honor them for placing their lives on the line and their tremendous sacrifice for our nation. We also pray for their families who have experienced the heartbreaking loss of their fathers, sons, mothers, daughters, and sisters, asking You to comfort them, to relieve the sorrow and grief, and fill them with Your peace. Bring healing to their broken hearts, O Lord, we pray, and let them experience joy in the cherished memories of their armed forces family members. In Jesus’ name, Amen

Kim Jong Un ENRAGED – Public FAILURE!

North Korea’s ambitious naval launch turned into a humiliating spectacle as a 5,000-ton destroyer capsized before Kim Jong Un’s eyes, triggering a furious response from the dictator who vowed severe punishment for those responsible.

At a Glance

  • North Korea’s second naval destroyer became unbalanced during its christening ceremony, causing severe damage to the hull
  • Satellite imagery shows the vessel lying on its side, partially submerged, with officials attempting to hide the failure under blue tarps
  • Kim Jong Un has ordered arrests and an investigation, calling it an “unpardonable criminal act”
  • Despite North Korea claiming minor damage, experts believe the vessel suffered catastrophic damage including hull breaches and engine room flooding
  • The humiliating failure raises questions about North Korea’s military capabilities and the reliability of its nuclear arsenal

A Public Humiliation for the Regime

The failed launch occurred at the Chongjin shipyard in May 2025 when a transport cradle detached prematurely during the ceremony. The 5,000-ton destroyer, intended to showcase North Korea’s naval advancements, immediately became unstable, suffering hull damage and a pronounced lean. Workers hastily covered the listing vessel with blue tarps in an attempt to conceal the disaster, but satellite imagery soon revealed the extent of the calamity. The warship appears partially submerged, with visible damage that military analysts suggest is far more severe than officially acknowledged.

Watch coverage here.

The Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) took the unusual step of acknowledging the incident, indicating the gravity of the situation. Typically, the state-controlled media conceals negative news, particularly military failures. The timing couldn’t have been worse for Kim Jong Un, who was reportedly present at the ceremony with high-ranking officials and likely a large audience, magnifying the public embarrassment for the regime that prides itself on projecting military strength and technological advancement.

Kim’s Fury and Consequences

Kim Jong Un’s response to the disaster has been swift and severe. The North Korean leader has ordered immediate arrests and investigations into those deemed responsible for the launch failure. Military officials, scientists, and shipyard operators are facing questioning and potential punishment as Kim attempts to reassert control and demonstrate his commitment to accountability within the military industrial complex.

“No matter how good the state of the warship is, the fact that the accident is an unpardonable criminal act remains unchanged, and those responsible for it can never evade their responsibility for the crime” North’s Central Military Commission.

The failure has been attributed to “absolute carelessness, irresponsibility and unscientific empiricism” according to state media reports. Kim has demanded the destroyer be restored within a month, setting an ambitious timeline that analysts believe may be impossible given the extent of the damage. The rushed deadline aims to address the errors before an upcoming Workers Party meeting, suggesting Kim is concerned about political fallout from the military disaster.

Technical Challenges and Military Implications

South Korean analysts point to North Korean workers’ inexperience with large warships as a primary factor in the launch failure. The 5,000-ton vessel represents a significant size increase from North Korea’s existing naval fleet and was reportedly launched using a method rarely employed in the country. This inexperience manifested in catastrophic results when the transport cradle detached during the launch ceremony, sending the partially completed warship crashing into the water at an improper angle.

“It’s a shameful thing, but the reason why North Korea disclosed the incident is it wants to show it’s speeding up the modernization of its navy forces and expresses its confidence that it can eventually build” Moon Keun-sik.

The damaged vessel is reportedly similar to the Choe Hyon destroyer, which was built with Russian assistance following a summit between Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The vessel was designed to carry various weapons systems, including nuclear-capable missiles, making it strategically significant despite North Korea’s otherwise inferior naval capabilities compared to regional powers. The failure raises serious questions about North Korea’s ability to produce and maintain sophisticated military equipment, including its nuclear arsenal.

Strategic Response and Regional Implications

In what appears to be a face-saving measure, North Korea fired multiple cruise missiles from near Sondok shortly after news of the destroyer incident emerged. This typical pattern of demonstrating military capability following embarrassments suggests the regime is concerned about maintaining its deterrence posture and projecting strength to both domestic and international audiences. Despite this setback, North Korea possesses approximately 50 nuclear warheads and continues to advance its missile technology, maintaining its position as a regional security threat.

“While KCNA described the damage as “not serious,” it also called what happened “an unpardonable criminal act.”” KCNA.

The failed destroyer launch exposes significant gaps in North Korea’s military industrial capacity and raises questions about the reliability of its weapons systems. If the regime cannot successfully launch a conventional warship, the competence of its nuclear program may deserve greater scrutiny. For American military planners and regional allies, this incident provides valuable insight into North Korean capabilities and limitations, potentially influencing defense strategies throughout the Pacific region.
